Florence
My unpopular opinion is that I cannot stand when the fans ship billie mike and tre together. It makes me uncomfortable and I don't get how it doesn't make you guys either. but but but... what about Trillikeson??? Hermione
Nothing wrong with a bit of fanfiction! It's only fantasy, a bit of fun that isn't real and doesn't harm anyone. You know, fiction. Last I checked this was an Unpopular Green Day Opinions thread, not a Bitch About Green Day's Wives thread. Leave it out. It's not classy at all. Exactly this. Don't use this thread to make nasty assumptions and bitchy comments about people you don't know who aren't even in Green Day please. And it's laughable that anyone would actually think they can judge someone's personality from looking at random Instagram photos in any case. musso_kn
GREEN DAY Not GREEN DAY (PLUS THEIR WIVES, THEIR KIDS, THEIR GARDENERS, THEIR DENTISTS, THAT GUY WHO FIXED TRÉ'S COFFEE MACHINE ONE TIME...) Well, to be honest, I've always thought Billie Joe's dentist could have done a slightly better job on his jagged as fuck teeth.

Pffft no, nowadays everyone has perfect teeth because everyone wears brackets just because. It's boring, everyone's teeth look the same and it's not even necessary to wear brackets for 90% of people who wear them. And they're expensive. Plus his jagged teeth and cool, they kind of give Billie more 'personality'.

SmoothedOut
I don't think they're those kind of people either, if only for the fact that this 'party animal' persona doesn't suit them! When they produced songs about 'excess' throughout the nineties, and even somewhat on American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, they had a real sense of humour about them. They weren't taking themselves too seriously. Compare Fuck Time with Blood, Sex and Booze: same subject matter, totally different approaches and only the latter really works. I kind of see what you meant about how they haven't left their political, serious phase completely: they're trying to talk about trivial things as if they're the end of the world! And it's hilarious - for all the wrong reasons. But, yeah, bottom line stands that they're still the three (or four...) loser kids from Berkeley/Oakland and they should re-embrace it anyway they can. I can finally have some time on the PC today! Anyway. I think Green Day are the forgotten masters of the genre they played in the 1990s. It's funny. We got so many bands in the past decade that not only failed imitating punk rock, but also the sense of humor Green Day had. I guess it makes sense to see the band smiling less frequently or goofing around in 2004 after releasing American Idiot - even if a lot of people out there who don't prefer them that way and would rather see the snotty nosed brats side of them that disappeared just towards the end of their 29th years of living, I'm thankful they're not what they are now. They just seem a little lost right now in my opinion and probably should have taken the past 4 years off to just reflect a little more instead of getting the trilogy released about a year ago. And yup, when you think about it again - yeah! Blood, Sex and Booze is exactly what it is but it's not surprising I didn't compare it with Fuck Time in the first place. Blood, Sex and Booze is in the mold of the original Green Day sound. Sure, after American Idiot Green Day was still Green Day - only with a touch of a more mainstream sort of sound I think. Before American Idiot however, I think there was an element or two that was there and hasn't returned since. And they need that if they're going to be writing non-concept albums again I think or we'll end up with.. well, what we have now.
Strayheart1219
Oh my parents (especially my mother) are quite conservative as well! But they know nothing of Bullet in the Bible or such, um, 'performances' so they're not too fussed! I think I'll try to keep it that way... Don't read fanfic, honey. It's that simple. Isn't it all creepy as shit? I do read fan fiction because some of it is really good, honey.
Guest
Green Day fanfiction is plain weird. this is coming from the girl who reads Supernatural fanfiction. i've never come across any GDFF that isn't creepy as shit. i love Billies teeth. my teeth are similarly fucked up and it's comforting that he has the same issue. my mum doesn't give a fuck about Billie's stage antics, swearing, talk of masturbation/sex. she's an awesome mum. i've never got why people get so embarrassed if, say, Longview comes on around their parents of HAR in BIAB it's just a bit of stage antics it's not real he doesn't actually whack off on stage. but ye my mums pretty cool. as long as i don't say cunt around her she's happy. I do read fan fiction because some of it is really good, honey. now now no need to use that tone 'sweety'. she was stating her opinion. as were you. musso_kn
why? Nothing personal. Because it's thoroughly enjoyable being snarky on the internet. Just ask Ceadog. I wasn't offended in the slightest that you used it either.
Clockwise
I think it's a gross exaggeration to say the trilogy is just about sex and drugs. There are actually only a few songs that reference sex... It's really just about a midlife crisis, which I think is brilliant and makes it some of their most personal and heartfelt material ever.
purplebenny
St.Jimmy is nowhere near as good live without Are We The Waiting.. it's just missing something.. also The Static Age should have been a single, one of the best songs off 21stCB
Guest
whenever i see people me all 'honey' and 'sweety' it's like an instant 'i'm gunna punch someone in the face seriously' so apologies for being a raging twunt bag. anyway, yes, i agree with clockwise. 100%. it's a midlife crisis trilogy, most definitely. the mentions of drugs, sex and general acting like a twat kinda push that theory even further. DannyDirnt
I don't think it's any bad if the trilogy has so much midlife crisis into it. After all, many of us will have one too and we'll be able to relate more to the trilogy. At least that's what I think.

I think what's missing is the fact that they were really understated and laid back back then, so singing about a dominatrix was acceptable. I worry that even if they do fully re embrace their previous persona, however, they won't be able to pull it off if only for the fact that no one really sees them in that light anymore. In short, they've way surpassed the point of no return; they can't be seen as anything but this great, big band now. I might, you might...a lot of people on this site might. I'm not too sure about the rest of the world though. I would agree that their sound became more mainstream around 2004, in that the production was nice clean etc. However, I stand by the fact that, musically, they've always had an extremely mainstream sound. Which brings me onto my unpopular opinion for you all. 39/smooth and Kerplunk could easily have been mainstream, major label records. Despite what some people say, just about anyone could sit there and enjoy Going to Pasalacqua. Those albums are hugely accessible.

After all, many of us will have one too and we'll be able to relate more to the trilogy. At least that's what I think. Billie Joe said himself when he wrote the Trilogy he was "shooting from the midlife crisis hip." I honestly do not mind the theme, it's something that people go through at some point and it's a different subject matter for the band. Their music has always revolved around some sort of existential crisis, and the Trilogy perfectly engulfs a different one, just as each album has done differently in the past. I think what's missing is the fact that they were really understated and laid back back then, so singing about a dominatrix was acceptable. I worry that even if they do fully re embrace their previous persona, however, they won't be able to pull it off if only for the fact that no one really sees them in that light anymore. Clean up the production on most punk bands and you end up with a hugely accessible form of rock. Part of Dookie's massive success is that classic dry-but-clean-rock sound that made albums like Metallica, Never Mind The Bollocks, Nevermind, and Paranoid hugely successful. Record Kerplunk using the same methods as Dookie and Insomniac and you've essentially got another hit on your hands. The same could be said for so many bands in the genre; it's ridiculous. Punk was supposed to be, after all, "the people's music".

Eva
While the Trilogy isn't my favorite, I appreciate the whole "mid-life crisis" theme. It means the band is being true to themselves, you know? If Billie Joe is freaking out because he turned 41 and his kid is graduating, he should go ahead and write a song. At least he's not pretending he's still 20, sleeping on his friend's couch, and masturbating. That would have been a lot worse because it wouldn't have been real.
