JOE THE X-KID
Interesting. I appreciate the change in style, but I've never had a burning desire to listen to it outside the context of Nimrod. good to listen to if you're stressed out actually, very relaxing... DannyDirnt
Vocally-wise, Billie Joe is being weird this tour. He's being pretty good, but not as good as before. He shortens long notes a lot, often sounds like he's almost breathless and doesn't have enough air to finish lines and in KYE during the chorus it sounds weird because you can hear better the high backing vocals than Billie Joe's leading vocals. Yeah, very evident on Jesus of Suburbia's "No one really seems to care.." ... And he screams some lines of songs instead of singing them

dersulbob
I have no time for 21st Century Breakdown any more. Too dark and overproduced, it just takes so much effort to listen to. No songs stand out to me either. Just a disappointing album. Similar issue with Insomniac. It's not overproduced, but again, nothing really stands out. I'd never sit down and just listen to it. Not sure about on here, but Warning is so underrated by my friends, in my opinion it is some of the band's greatest work. Comparing it to 21st Century Breakdown is a perfect example of "less is more". The trilogy is better than anything pre-Warning. Not saying any of those albums are bad, but I'm just loving the trilogy that much! I like the hey-ohs.
Jon Benjamin
Wild One is missing a verse! It would have been amazing if it would have been less repetitive.2 verses is pretty standard if there was a 3rd there'd have to be another chorus making it more repetitive
WhiteTim
really? i actually think he's sounded better on this tour than he has in a long time i mean, yeah he screams some lines instead of singing them but he's always done that. i might feel differently just from watching videos but hearing his voice in person this tour it's a huge improvement. idk if he sounds better because he's sober now or what but i notice a difference in a good way. I dunno at SXSW he didnt sound good at all when he sang Stray Heart
DannyDirnt
I've listened to the Greek Theatre bootleg, it's very good quality, so that's what I'm judging. Billie's voice was way better on 21st CB tour and this can't be caused by cigarettes, I doubt they can fuck up your voice in 1 year because in 2011 he sounded AWESOME. DannyDirnt
Yeah, but listening to Awesome as F**k and then to a new concert is a little bit disappointing
deletethisaccount
About Awesome as Fuck, when it came out, Billie said on twitter that it was 100% live, no overdubs. ...Well, I don't believe him. His voice doesn't usually sound that warmed up and on key. He just never sounds like that live. I could be totally wrong though.
Eva
He took off his trousers? I didn't think that had been a thing since the Nimrod tour... Not completely. They were down to his knees, maybe? He was wearing boxers though so it's not like he was letting everything hang out like he used to.Similar issue with Insomniac. It's not overproduced, but again, nothing really stands out. I'd never sit down and just listen to it. ................. Brilliant album, brilliant songs, brilliant lyrics, brilliant artwork, brilliant everything. Insomniac > American Idiot > everything else If only Insomniac didnt get fucked off in the mix it'd be the best sounding album of GD but Jerry "let's bury the vocals" Finn did his usual music loud vocals low mix on it but other than that it was a wonderful sounding album
Cob
Seriously? I can here the vocals fine on Insomniac, and on Jerry's other work (as a punk fan I've listened to a lot of music he produced/mixed).

It's not like they're completely buried, but you have to admit they're a bit harder to hear than the vocals on other Green Day albums from Dookie onward. Well maybe buried is the wrong choice of words but he did mix the music louder than the vocals Listen to all the other GD and than Insomniac u can tell Billie's vocals are mixed lower
Cob
I don't really hear it. He's definitely harder to understand than compared to the other records, but I attribute that more to the guitar tone and the fact that he sounds like he's singing with a mouth full of mashed potatoes. Maybe this is the mix...hmmm...more listening must be done.

JOE THE X-KID
The Awesome as Fuck DVD is pretty shit, the musics great but there's just way too many effects and camera angles, drives me mad I just wanna watch the band play.
Cob
I definitely like Jerry Finn's work with Blink 182 than his work with Green Day. I'm torn on this. He mixed Dookie, which has a phenomenal sound that changed the way punk records sounded in the early to mid 90's. And he produced Blink-182, which is one of the best pop-punk/alternative records ever. But then again, he accidentally created that really glossed up, polished, pseudo-manufactured sound that all pop-punk bands since Enema of the State have imitated. That sound worked for Blink on Enema and TOYPAJ, but it's influence has pretty much sterilized the genre since. I love the way Enema of the State sounds, but if was up to me, I think I might have made it sound a little less polished. That's just my opinion though. Agreed. The camera rarely showed whoever was playing a solo - they just kept it on Billie as well.

I haven't watched it in a while, but I remember getting angry at how little they showed Mike, Tre, Jason, and all the other guys who were onstage at some point compared to Billie. I understand he's the frontman and all but he's not the whole band.

stories and songs
I thought Billie's singing was excellent when I saw them in April. Like really, really phenomenal. Much better than past Green Day concerts I had been to. Unpopular opinions: The crazy laser light show that has been going on during this tour doesn't do it for me. At all. I felt so distracted during the concert, and it was hard to see the band at times because of all the damn flashing lights. I mean yeah, it looks cool, but its just too much. Also, I miss the pyro horribly. There are some wonderfully written songs on the trilogy that I find completely amazing. But many of them, I feel, are a huge step back lyrically. And its not that I need them to always write about dark, heavy topics (although I do enjoy such songs) - what I really miss is the humor. I feel as though a lot of the clever, funny lyrics are missing from the trilogy that have always been present in Green Day's writing. In the trilogy, their slower songs have brilliant lyrics, but quite a few of the more upbeat songs just aren't at the level I'm used to with their lyrics. Not all of them, of course - some of the faster songs are also wonderfully written. But still. Overall, I'm disappointed in the lyrics. I feel as though when looking back at the band's career, this time will go down in history as "the lost era." To the outside world, it is as though nothing even happened in Green Day land in regard to new music. Like, I hear Oh Love on satellite radio occasionally. That's it. And it makes me sad, because a lot of work went into the trilogy and it possesses some excellent songs. But you can tell it has already basically been swept under the rug.
