Clean Cut Asshole
Using gay as an insult is likely to piss off 99% of people on this site. Calling Billie gay won't piss off "fangirls" because they don't like the idea of him being gay, but because calling someone gay as an insult is ignorant and offensive. I'm sure you were only joking but that kind of post won't win you any friends here. By the way, if I ever see Billie in person, this is what I'm gonna do to him... (minus the face of devastation. Sorry Ceadog, this is the best Jay and Silent Bob gif for this I can think of)...
Hermione
That's okay, I have a few friends on here that would find it funny! Yes calling something gay is the height of wit . Well anyway in future if all you have to post is a homophobic slur please refrain from posting, it's useless spam. By the way, if I ever see Billie in person, this is what I'm gonna do to him... Mar
99 Revolutions is a godawful opener. Though it'd be perfect for closing the set before the first encore. Why can't they just do the fucking logical thing and open with Nuclear Family, for fuck sake. I think that or a See You Tonight/Fuck Time opener would have made more sense (not necessarily what I'd want). Although I wish 99 Revolutions wasn't played at all, I think it would have been better as a middle song or even the second song; I could see a lot of songs sequeing into it decently. Nothing about it screams opener. Going back to the EJN argument, it was never my favorite song by them, but I didn't hate it. I remember finding it ridiculous when either Q or NME said it had no tune, but, yknow, I don't think the song has aged well and now I think it's right. The guitar is just really repetitive and while I like the lyrics, I just can't bring myself to listen to the song anymore. It's really weird! Hermione
The musical was a terrible idea Really? I'm not a fan of musicals so I didn't personally enjoy the music from it or have any desire to go and see it, but I couldn't say it was a terrible idea. It was a success for the band in terms of challenging themselves by trying something new creatively, and in terms of money, and was critically acclaimed. It inspired a big creative spurt in Billie that probably led to loads of new songs being written and to him trying new things in them - I can't imagine we'd have songs like Brutal Love or The Forgotten without them having explored musical music for example. And appearing in it will have broadened and improved Billie's singing range and skill as a performer even further. Plus it inspired Fuck Time and caused this to happen I think even if you hate musicals the AI musical still did lots of good things for the band and fans. Me neither but I suppose "following" it on here gave me some pleasure from it. Looking at your list again, I strongly share your opinion of Nightlife! And I don't know if I'm just imagining it but it seems like more and more people are coming round to liking it. This pleases me. Oh and welcome to GDC btw! The Platypus!
None of the singles on American Idiot are the best songs. They are all great songs but for me they were all too overplayed and ruined. Homecoming was the best song on the album. The Grouch is Green Day's best song and Nimrod their best album. On the album there is a variety of fast paced songs, slow songs, acoustic songs. This made it my favourite album.

Hermione
Poor Billie, I think he looked lovely . It was actually a GDCer (ToniAnn) who gave him that dress too which is cool. She gave it to him outside the theatre and he promptly went and changed into it and came back out to show it off.
Guest
The musical was a terrible idea While I wouldn't phrase it this way, I agree with you to an extent. I guess I never got it, either due to my lack of interest in musicals or because I just didn't care. I'm glad that the band and the fans enjoyed it as much as they did and that it exposed more people to the awesomeness that is Green Day, but it simply wasn't for me. TheNimrod51
I know a lot of people shit on 21CB (the album) but I really think 21CB (the song) was a great opener. Just hearing the beginning of the song, the buildup as the band comes out? Shit, I'm getting chills just thinking about it. This time, the band just appeared ... like, the Good, Bad and the Ugly buildup fell flat for me, and then they just were there onstage and just started playing this rote, not all that exciting song. With 21CB, you had the instruments just all coming together at the end of the intro, the "ooh"s, the pyro (I can live without the pyro but it was cool in the opener) and it was just really exciting. 99 Revolution is just such a simple song to me. (I'm sorry, I just really hate Billie's love for that goddamn song. ) Well i think instrumentally 99 Revs is one of my favorite songs. If you really listen, all the instruments sound perfect together and man..That riff... I agree on 21CB being a better opener. I went to the detroit show back in 2010 and man did 21CB get my heart pumping. I miss that era. He seemed so.. professional? I don't know. It's hard to explain. Billie seems a bit uptight now but a lot happier so that's good.

Anaïs.
The musical was a terrible idea I love musicals, but I agree with you here. The original American Idiot album was an intensely personal, very tight, briefly told story. The musical pretty much destroyed that. First off: far too many characters. Changing the songs to be from the perspectives of people like Will and Tunny not only makes the story make less sense, as the lyrics were originally about just Jesus, Jimmy and Whatsername, it distills the story far too much and makes it far less personal than the album. Secondly: too many new songs. Adding the 21CB songs was a huge mistake—they entirely disrupt the narrative flow, and no wonder, as they're part of an entirely different narrative on an entirely different album. The original album, despite its nearly 60-minute length, felt tightly edited, just long enough to be epic but short enough that it didn't wear out its welcome. The musical is bloated, rambling and overlong. Finally—the cast. I'm sorry, but they turned something that, despite the fact that it's mostly arena rock, still has a punk feel into something that sounds like the cast of Glee. So overall, not a huge fan of the musical. If the movie ever gets out of development hell, I hope it discards the musical's extra characters and songs and sticks to the original story. For that matter, they shouldn't even have new recordings of the songs; they should do what Pink Floyd did with The Wall and just have the album play as the movie's soundtrack. stories and songs
Then they'd just be like every other boring band though. Their ability to not take themselves too seriously, be silly, and allow the audience to participate is what makes a Green Day show a Green Day show. I 100% agree. A Green Day show is FUN. And what makes their concerts different from other concerts is that they're playing with you, not AT you. I have been to concerts where the band doesn't even acknowledge that there is an audience until like halfway through the set. Being used to Green Day, I find that to be so strange! Being at a Green Day show is so comfortable, because you feel welcome and included by the band. You're not just watching, you're an active participant. I love that. As for the "y'know" conversation - it's just a nervous thing. It is the same as saying "like" or "umm" too much when public speaking (and being in an interview definitely counts as public speaking, it can be so nerve-wracking!). It doesn't bother me that he does it. I'd much rather him say that than just give short, rehearsed answers to questions.

I really hope they take it in the direction of The Wall. For the number of characters, I think a full length movie might fall into the same trap as the musical, with the logic that only three main characters will become boring and not dynamic enough for viewers. I would give the argument that the number of characters is irrelevant - the plot and lyrics should provide enough to draw viewers in, which is exactly why the album succeeded in the first place. Their ability to not take themselves too seriously, be silly, and allow the audience to participate is what makes a Green Day show a Green Day show. You get it. I really hope there isn't a movie. And if there is, make the band a third party. No Billie Joe as St. Jimmy. Make it like The Wall but make the band a third party that follows Jesus around. I hope it's less like RENT and more like something else. Don't just put the musical on film, that's too boring.

It's as if, even though the fans pay to attend, the band is doing them a "favor" while rolling their eyes.
Cob
Bands that are excellent live aren't always entertaining. The Strokes, for example, are superb live. But all they do is play the songs, knock out an encore, and then go home. They sound great, but their show is otherwise unremarkable.

Banning someone because his beliefs about gays are not in line with yours is in complete opposition of what Green Day and this whole country stands for. Just saying.
