Unpopular Green Day Opinions

I think Road to Acceptance is extremely underrated. It's all about a problem most of us have at some point, and it sounds energetic and beautiful.

I'm not sure if it's an unpopular opinion, but I really really love Makeout Party. It's my favorite song off of ¡Dos!.

In Chicago he was out the whole time

Also, an upopular opinion. I would rather Cigarettes & Valentines had come out instead of American Idiot.

I mean, I wouldn't mind hearing the songs from that era (see my below agreement with the "not an album" thing) but honestly? I don't think Green Day would exist today if it came out, because I think it would have tanked. Forget all the "not leaving the band unless we're in a coffin" thing; that's easy to say now, but not in '02-'03 or in a post CAV world.

i miss the 21stCB era.

(please don't kill me)

I do too. Maybe it was because I was so new to the fandom and everything was new and exciting, but I really do. I still really enjoy 21CB (even if it hasn't held up as well as AI).

The 21st Century Breakdown period was great. But, I absolutely loath the artwork from that time period. I couldn't take it seriously. I've loved the artwork and "theme" that went along with each album but 21st's I just didn't get. To me it was too youth politic, too teenage-girl-emo, too Occupy (in hindsight).

I liked the artwork but I do feel like 21CB's political themes were a little forced. Not to say I don't like the songs, but like you said, too youth politic.

Not sure if it's unpopular but i don't think there was ever a Cigarettes & Valentines album. I still find it hard to believe that someone was able to steal the master recordings or whatever and they never like ~persued any charges or anything

Seems like more than anything they had recorded a few songs and didn't really know where it was going so they kind of had to step back and re-evaluate what they they were doing and then idk American Idiot happened. Kind of like the whole "fuck Walmart" thing, I feel like the "stolen album" story was just a way to hype up American Idiot.

THIS. I feel like in 10 years, something would have been leaked. They were probably early enough in the planning stages that someone took them home and no love was lost/nothing was missed and they just moved on.

I believe they did record the tracks dont believe it got stolen tho i think they weren't satisfied with the results and just abandoned the project and moved on to AI

Yeah, I misstated that; I believe they were recorded, too, just maybe not mastered or if they were, I highly doubt they were anywhere close to being close to finishing the album (mastering tracks, finalizing a tracklist, artwork, etc.). But, that's just my thinking. I think that the subject is always gonna be something that's debated in the fandom, considering a lot of people are calling BS on the band itself

Yeah i had posted my theory

In a interview Mike said they had made back up on DAT tapes which leads me to believe they were using to record the album as DAT tapes are analog source there'd be no point to have back ups on DAT tapes if it was a digitally recorded album cause then they could just easily just make cd back ups. I think they recorded uaing DA-88's or most likely ADATS which are the size of VHS tapes which holds 8 tracks per tape so if they had 24 tracks that'd be 4 tapes for one song alone (again I'm assuming they use more than 24 tracks so more tapes would been used) Mike has said they did 20 songs (and you're right it hadnt been properly mixed nor had tracks had been selected) that's alot of tapes to just magicly disappear and i dont know what studio they were using Warning used Studio 880 (now known as Jingletown) AI used Ocean Way if it was done at Ocean Way from experience they check people entering and leaving you have to be buzzed in and buzzed out each time

But gopefully one day we'll see or hear something from C&V

For me the political themes were "youth politic" because the characters in the concept were two very young people inside a decaying world. You can't expect from them to have political views like Karl Marx, the only thing you can expect is to have anger against authority. ;)

Anyway why do you want complex political ideas in songs? That will only make less political people not understand a shit.

Or you'd educate people on shit that they should really know, like RATM, Public Enemy, Bad Religion...

"Adolescence just can't make sense" ahh, early Green Day got me through those angsty teen times tbh

Dirty Rotten Bastards is good and catchy, but it's highly overrated. It would barely crack my top 40 Green Day songs if that.

I've never seen the band live, but I feel like if I did now, I couldn't help but be slightly disappointed. I hate what they do to songs like Letterbomb and Minority, making them last almost 9 minutes each because of an unnecessary extended bridge between the second chorus and the end.

I feel like everyone thinks it's hip to crap on Billie's showmanship. Sitting at home listening to him "HEEEYYYY-OHHHH" for 10 minutes isn't fun but when you're at the concert it's a blast because you feel so involved and like you're a part of the music/band. STOP HATING ON THE HEY-OH'S. It's no longer hipster. /endrant

I hated it before it was cool to hate it.

:toocool:

Yeah I'm not hating it because it's hipster? I'm not in high school haha. I don't mind adding hey ohs and interaction now and again in spontaneous places throughout the songs. But can we get ONE performance of Letterbomb on this tour that just plays the song through?

I can't remember if this has been mentioned before, but MAN do the YouTube comment sections of Green Day related videos depress me. The sentiment of the comments swing from twelve year olds going 'OMG Billie's zoo haawwt' to old buggers (or twelve year olds trying to be cool) complaining how Green Day were only good in the 'old days'.

I don't think No One Knows gets enough credit as one of the best slow-ish songs in their back catalogue. The bass is a dream, the lyrics are beautiful and the melancholic tone and almost train like (I like to think of it is a train) pace sound gorgeous. Really underrated piece of excellence.

On the other hand, although Dookie's a stellar record overall, it contains a few of the band's biggest stinkers: namely Chump, Pulling Teeth and In the End. Urgh. I'm not a fan.

I love Pulling Teeth. I would take that, F.O.D (All By Myself included), Burnout, and Emenius Sleepus over WTP, She, Longview, and WICA any day.

Exception made for Basket Case

I fangirl over Jason White a lot for some reason. Not really an opinion but definitely unpopular.

I absolutely adore this band more than anything on planet earth so I say this very lovingly, but sometimes staying in a longterm "relationship" with them can take a lot of work.

I have a looong history of obsessing over one thing for days, weeks, or months at a time, and then chucking them in the closet once I'm done, never to see the light of day again. I honestly think that if I didn't join GDC, I would be over Green Day already. Just my luck, I did join!

And yes, long term relationships are tough, especially those that involve money and traveling. Come on Billie! why can't you play all your concerts in Chicago for free?

^ I'm actually a rather committed person with the things I love - for example, I've had the same favorite movies, music, television shows, hobbies and sense of style for years and years. I like to think it is because I just picked 'em all right the first time.

Though the difference between Green Day and say, my favorite movie, is that my favorite movie will always be the same story with the same characters saying the same lines no matter how many times I watch it. Green Day is comprised of real individuals who are personally and musically evolving all the time. And sometimes that can present challenges. But there is no other band in the world I'd rather go through said challenges with, and that is why I choose to stay, and will always stay.

Here's an example of what I mean.

I LOVE chocolate. It's always fun to get some for a holiday or elsewhere, and I have no problem in telling others that I love it. Yet, if I were to go on a chocolate eating binge for month, I suspect my desire to eat it would never be the same, and I might even despise it. There is a threshold that goes along with the change from a passion to an obsession - moderation is key in most cases. Green Day appears to by my exception - I have yet to stray from them, their music, or GDC.

I think 99 Revolutions is an amazing intro. Better than American Idiot but not as good as 21CB. Kill me.

Plus if someone someone stole the tapes, wouldn't they have tried to release the music by now?
