God no. 21stCB should have been the lead single. I'm glad Static Age wasn't a single, it's a stormer live, but I don't think it would have been radio friendly enough.

Correction:21st Century Breakdown should have been the lead single. But I would love to see static age recieve airplay or something.

I doubt it would have gotten airplay, it's lyrics are extremely anti mass-media :P

any song on 21cb other than know your enemy should have been the lead single.

Even Peacemaker?

It's good, but it rarely departs from their standard verse chorus verse chorus bridge solo verse chorus format. Slapping some strings onto a standard piano ballad (The Forgotten) doesn't

suddenly make them geniuses, nor does pinching a melody line from a 50s

innovator (Brutal Love).

Although, I'm not suggesting they are geniuses. I'm saying that the fact that they're not necessarily the most technically gifted musicians shouldn't take away from their ability to be inventive at times.

But come on, tracks like Misery and Last Ride In? They do occasionally completely depart from their usual sound and do it well. You telling me those songs are typical Green Day? They don't do it at all often enough, that's true. With a little care and time, they could, I like to think, create a variety of different sounds across a while album.

In fact, I think the trilogy shows that, if anything, they need to let go of their pop punk sound. They've done it to fucking death now. They songs are good, but some just merge into each other and aren't nearly as memorable as any track on any of their previous records.

My point is, they HAVE to experiment, or else they're going to produce some really recycled, rehashed, unengaging shite in the future and I really don't want to see that happen.

Fuck y'all, Horseshoes & Handgrenades should have been the first single :P

That'd have been : "I'm not *beep* around!!!!"

Yes. What's wrong with Peacemaker? It's awesome.

But it's not good for a single.

Last Ride In is a surf rock jam with one riff :P Misery is inventive, but it's the exception that proves the rule. It's an obscure album track, loved by die hard fans and no one else. Evidence enough that an album of similar stuff would die a slow painful death.

The trilogy had some amazing pop-punk songs. Sure, a lot of them were b-side standard, but that's what happens when you give quality control the finger and release a shit ton of music. I mean, Missing You, X Kid, Lazy Bones, Let Yourself Go? Green Day still have a huge amount to offer in terms of pop punk.

But it's not good for a single.

Basically, this :P

If they drop pop punk what would they do? They've always been pop punk...

If you read my whole post, I was trying to say that I think they should go in for some more experimentation, just like they have done in the past.

They've been hit and miss with their experimentations and they've been around waayyy too long to drop their sound for something entirely new

Tho I wouldn't mind more Miserys or more 50's r&b tributes at all

There's probably not even 5 Green Day songs that you could call experimental, out of 180. I wouldn't recommend a genre change based on that.

I think they experiment a fair amount, it might not be full on "experimental songs" but there's often experimental elements to them. That's what I really like about them, they have that core Green Day sound but they've never been afraid to explore other influences and change things up a bit as well. They have the balance between keeping things the same and trying new things just right for my taste.

1) Misery (I think we agree here, so no explanation.)

2) Last Ride In (You called it surf rock jam. So not pop punk at all)

3) King for a Day (Ska, right? Which, yes, has some connections with pop punk but they'd never done it before.)

4) Peacemaker (You probably will totally disagree, but it does play on the eastern european/middle eastern/ whichever country or culture's music you think it emulates quite heavily)

5) Brutal Love (This is a bit of a ripoff, yes. Still a departure from even their typical 'ballad' sound)

And I have to reiterate that I agree that they haven'texperimented much at all but they've managed to pull a lot of it off very well. I realise, though my initial feelings were different, that Kill the DJ and Nightlife are pretty poor in terms of 'experimentation'. Maybe that's partially due to the way they rushed through the making of the trilogy and favoured quantity over quality.

I hate Static Age. I think it's a boring track with no hooks except the line about the batteries not being included.

King for a Day is barely ska, unless you count slapping some brass onto a standard GD song ska :P Peacemaker is a bit different, it's got a Warning vibe to it, but it's not a huge departure from their style by any means. Brutal Love would have been innovative, if they'd at least come up with a new melody line, haha.

My point is, none of their experimentation has ever been more than that. They've never done something HUGELY different and had it pay off big time.

I love Static Age, but the live version on AAF really let me down. It was just... flat. I think the studio version (along with Viva la Gloria) would have been perfect as a single instead of Know Your Enemy

Are you suggesting something along the lines of Achtung Baby/Zooropa, or less dramatic?

Mate, I hate U2. You might as well be talking about The Spice Girls, for all it means to me.

Strangely enough, Sarcasm is rarely sarcastic. He's just a cunt usually.
