joeysturkeyhead
I strongly disagree with this but won't be rude!! Mike has some great lines and we know he is good but i'm a guitarist first, bassist 2nd, some of Mikes best lines like longview and No one knows are challenging but don't take to long to master, i've been trying to learn Billie's solo's from the first album for years and out of the hard ones have only managed to learn Knowledge and judges Daughter well. The Majority of Green Days material don't show what a great guitarist Billie is like the first album the the trilogy. I think you rate Tre a bit highly in this list as well, he is a solid drummer but i'm yet to be convinced that he's one of the greats in pop punk like alot of people here beleive, when i look at other big pop punk bands i've listened to i would say Stevo 32 and Travis (who i think is a massive knob) are the best imo and i don't think Tre comes close, that's not to say he's not great though..! It's not allways about hiw hard it is to play, it's also about the actual bassline, not everyone could write one as good as Longview and No One Knows. Plus, bass is a lot easier than guitar, not allways but mostly.
Tubbie Head
I hate the censored version of Fuck Time though. OH BABY BABY IT'S F-WOO TIME. First reaction-WHAT? I think I like it even more than the original, It sounds so funny
DannyDirnt
I like When I Come Around but I think it's fairly overrated. It's just a soft song that, to me, fades into obscurity after hearing the rest of Dookie.

Schlappy
Mike is terribly underrated. He has produced some of the greatest basslines but he does not get much credit for them.In 70% of Green Day songs we don't hear a bass guitar sound. This is sad because that man can write the most epic bassline ever even when he's stoned on alcohol/drugs.I hope Mike gets more respect.I'm not saying he does not get it at all, but I want to see a bit more.To be honest, Mike's Bass Skills>Tre's Drumming Skills>Billie's Vocal Skills>Billie's Guitar skills>Jason's Guitar skills everything was fine until that last line! Though it's really hard and probably inaccurate to compare them because they all have different jobs to do and each person excels at what they do, in my opinion Tre is the most skilled technically and Jason is NOT in last place. The thing is all of them are talented.I rated Mike at no.1 since his basslines are innovative. The longview one is just genious.Tre comes at 2 because he is a different drummer altogether.I have been following a lot of drummers but Tre's style is different from all.And he definately matches travis, who I believe is overrated.Check out tre's drumming in insomniac(especially jaded). He makes drumming look so simple. Then of course we have billie. He surely has a great voice. But there is a lot of competetion when it comes to being a guitarist(since a lot of eyes are focussed on the lead guitarist of any band). His riffs are surely amazing. Also, it's not a joke to sing that well and play the guitar THAT well at the same time like Billie does, but he makes it look so simple. everything was fine until that last line! Granted i am not a musician so i have no idea, but i'd say billie on guitar. But then if you add vocals and songwriting he's probably first. See? it cant be ranked! how about rocky is last

I'm sorry but I haven't followed Jason that well.If not Jason then who? Fair point about insomniac but i'm not sure he's ever out done himself since that album really. I liked his stuff on dookie to, the fills in burnout are great. Mike has some great basslines, longview was a great bassline to come up with and i'd say No one knows is even better, it's just a shame on the last few albums he plays more simplified lines, i might be forgetting newer songs but i don't think he's really showed how good he is since castaway. Onto Billie though.. when he sings it is over power chords which isn't really that hard, i think when he stops singing in some of the oldest and newest Green Day songs to play a solo is when he shines as a great guitarist as some of them are pretty technical. The guy from muse i think is the best example of someone who can do amazing vocals while playing lead guitar at the same time rather than chords. Most people don't give a shit about bass players, or give them credit for anything, unless they themselves are really attentive fans or musicians, so I don't even see the point of thinking about it like that... what kind of *credit* can any of us reasonably expect Mike (or even Tre for that matter) to get? Paul McCartney played bass, but he wrote and sang the songs. The songwriter will always be the only one who gets any kind of widespread praise (or criticism) for their talents. It doesn't mean the instrumentalists aren't making significant and worthy contributions, but even if Mike was considered the greatest bass player alive, no one would care... plenty of people can list Hendrix etc as the greatest guitarist ever, but no one talks about bass players in that way. Also I'm not convinced Mike is a genius bass player the way people want to make him out to be, in the same way that most people are willing to admit that Billie isn't the greatest guitar player ever. They're all very good at making the music they make, and since we like that music, we're not going to complain about their skills. It's not allways about hiw hard it is to play, it's also about the actual bassline, not everyone could write one as good as Longview and No One Knows. Plus, bass is a lot easier than guitar, not allways but mostly. Agreed. If you think of super famous bass lines, (like Under Pressure) I don't know how hard they actually are to *play* they're just extremely catchy. IMO Mike has written ONE bassline that has gained attention and that is Longview. I agree that No One Knows and a handful of others have nice basslines, but those are only significant insofar as you can actually HEAR the bass. Just because you're *hearing* bass doesn't mean it's epic, it just means the song is revolving around the sound of a bass guitar. I think Green Day fans have a tendency to overreact with joy whenever they hear prominent basslines, regardless of what it is, because like "OMG! There's Mike!" Maybe it's because his sound was completely unheard on American Idiot, but I still don't think being able to *hear* the bass (and hear how it is being played well and nicely and melodically) has to mean Mike is some savant. I'm not saying he's bad, he's obviously good... I just think bceause Mike's such a great, modest guy, we're all a little over-eager to crown his triumphs. All of this just adds up to one point: This is a band, and they'd be nothing without each other.

Is it known what Jason recorded on the trilogy? Considering some of the guitar work Billie did over 20 years ago and all the years he has been playing since i don't see why he wouldn't be able play any of the solos on the trilogy? Heather.
Billie is a painfully average guitarist at best. There's a reason they had to get Jason in to record certain guitarlines. I'm not sure they *had* to get Jason. I'm sure Billie is capable of recording the parts that Jason has recorded (and up until recently wrote all of them himself)... he's been very forthcoming in saying that he "just doesn't have the patience" to be that good at guitar or work on honing his finesse, so he's just sloppy and lazy about it, and that's probably why Jason does what he does in the studio (his contributions live are obvious, and perfectly rational given Billie's responsibilities being a showman.)Is it known what Jason recorded on the trilogy? I think the solos on the trilogy are Billie for sure. Yeah, it's not the solos I mean. It's the stuff like the tremolo guitar on East Jesus Nowhere, and the harmonics on Nuclear Family that are more Jason's work. Billie simply isn't good enough technically for it. Mar
Don't get me wrong, Shenanigans has a lot of good songs on it and I like it a lot, but when people say it's better than any of their proper albums I think they must be crazy . Some cool b-sides slapped together with a few decent covers doesn't anywhere near stack up to any of their proper carefully crafted albums. Seriously. It's a pretty great collection ... for a collection of B-sides.
Akshat
Billie is a painfully average guitarist at best. There's a reason they had to get Jason in to record certain guitarlines. In Billie's own words, they needed Jason because they wanted american idiot to be a "two guitar, drums and bass" album and inducting jason has nothing to do with billie's skills. To be honest, old green day songs(with billie in complete control over the guitar section) have much better riffs than the new ones(american idiot onwards).Even the best riffs/solos like american idiot, know your enemy, last of the american girls etc are usually performed by billie, jason is backup for most parts.
