Unpopular Green Day Opinions

I don't like Last Night On Earth. I tried to make myself like it, but I couldn't. It's just way too cheesy for my taste and I really hate the line with the fire, it doesn't go very well with the rest of the song.

I think I just don't *understand* the fire thing. It seems thematically in line with the rest of the album, but kind of has no context. I mean, I get the vibe of it, but when you're listening to all the cliche love lyrics and then it's like, "Wait, what fire? There's a fire? OK, I guess there's a fire then..." It does feel random and confused.

Isn't it kinda like a metaphor? Like if something bad happens, the fire thingy. I think it works very well, it doesn't feel random.

I think it makes perfect sense. To me, the whole song seems like an apology to Gloria after his rage and anger during Christian's Inferno (the two songs actually flow together like LOTAG and Murder City, as well).

Therefore, when he says:

"If I lose everything in the fire / I'm sending all my love to you" and later, "If I lose everything in the fire / Did I ever make it through?"

It seems like he's apologizing for his anger in the past and also for the things he knows he will do in the future (Peacemaker, Murder City, Horseshoes and Handgrenades come to mind)

My mom cried during When It's Time and WMUWSE when we say the musical. I think it was because the song reminded her of her sister who died of Cancer a few years ago.

It IS kinda stupid. It's catchy and energetic but the lyrics seem really forced.

Yeah I know but what I meant is that I didn't like it because of it.

Yes, exactly. If it's supposed to be a metaphor, it's not a very good one.

I love the trilogy. So much. I think it's easily one of the best things Green Day's EVER done imo. :)

Greater words have never been spoken :D

Welcome to GDC! You should make a thread in the "Welcome to Paradise" section

I really hate "Ashley". I don't know what it is, but it's probably my least favorite song from the Trilogy.

I see "the fire" as referring to his passion. That seems like the obvious interpretation to me. He's afraid that he'll lose himself in his strong emotions or his passion, whether it be good or bad.

There isn't a song I dislike in the trilogy (even Lazy Bones or Walk Away, two songs that I hated at first listen).

But, on the other hand, there is just a few songs I really love (Brutal Love and Missing You are the only examples that come to my mind at the moment).

I don't feel the timeless thing in the trilogy, even though I like the overall thing. I think that, one year from now, I will listen to the trilogy albums at the same frequency that I listen to the others albums, once or twice within six months.

Well, I didn't really like the Trilogy first. But yesterday, I listened to the whole thing and it was just amazing. I still think that the guitars are too thin and the voice effects are shit, but the songs are just fucking awesome.

Ok, my turn!

  1. Shenanigans is one of Green Day's best albums, followed closely by Warning and Insomniac.
  2. The triolgy is probably at the same level as all of those mediocre (good, but not wonderful) Green Day albums (Nimrod, 1039, Kerplunk, Dookie, 21stcb etc...)
  3. American Idiot is kind of like in it's own world. I don't even classify it as like a regular Green Day album to be thrown in with the rest. The hype about killed me inside but 8 years later, it's not really a big deal anymore and I can appreciate the album for what it truly is: a masterpiece of 13 amazing songs.
  4. Fucking can't stand Good Riddance. Couldn't be happier that it's off the set-list!

I've always seen it that way, too.

This is probably an unpopular opinion:

I have a sneaking suspicion that Billie Joe believes in God or is decidedly NOT an atheist.

Who cares? Honestly? If the chap wants an imaginary friend, let him have one.

I didn't say it bothered me (on the contrary), I'm just saying most people don't have the opinion that this is accurate.

The "she's old enough to bleed now" line in Drama Queen makes me uncomfortable.

I hate the "Amy pleaseeee don't gooo" part of Amy. I don't think it works well with the rest of it at all, and i think it's ruining the song.

I'm not sure what the general consensus on Castaway is, but I love that song. I feel like it has that 50s high school dance vibe. Warning to me is quite happy music to depressing lyrics, which makes the whole album sort of sarcastic.

Out of interest, what is it that makes you feel he's not an atheist?

Castaway's pretty popular, methinks. I personally can't stand it, though.

Well he's never said he was one

He never has really said (from what ive seen/read but iis havent seen every interview) he didnt believe in god and jesus just that he didnt care for the fanatical organized religions

I havent seen him give a real commited answer to say he is an athiest or not just cause he doesnt like organized religions means he is an athiest

I believe there is a god and jesus but i dont claim any of the religions they're too corrupted... but i wouldnt claim im a religious person

I read in Aaron Cometbus that Adrienne's mom (who's a pastor or some religious thing) was pretty pissed because Billie said some shit about god.
