Unpopular Green Day Opinions

The problem isn't that Green Day wants to forget the trilogy - it comes down to the fans. I can assure you, they love every one of their albums, but for concerts, Billie knows that the majority of "fans" will not want to hear stuff they don't know the words to, or perhaps haven't even heard :o

Basically, a large number of concert attendees have already moved on, even though the rest of us, including the band would like nothing more than to rock out to 10+ trilogy songs a night.

I'm pretty sure most fans would know the lyrics to Dirty Rotten Bastards. Not sure they've played it live.

No, they haven't. It's a shame. Even if they didn't know, it's really easy to catch on to the melody, and the yeahs at the start are self-explanatory as far as BJ and his hey-oh!s are concerned

I've been a fan since summer 94 and Dookie was the album that got me into Green Day but Dookie is not their best work (or even best sound)...

I used to love Dookie - "classic" Green Day, easier on the ears than their other work, loads of replayability, etc... but I much prefer Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning now.

Ok, maybe I miss understood what this thread is for, but that's my only complaints about the GDC and the band themselves.

My hope is that Green Day are not playing their new songs because they want to forget about them and move on. Kind of like Warning. The only song I can recall them playing since the BiaB tour from that is Minority. That I've seen anyways.

I don't think they'd want to forget about them, but I think they want to play their "best" work. Personally, I think Fashion victim would be bad ass to see live, as well as Church on Sunday and Castaway. They played Blood, Sex & Booze at Fox boro Hottubs shows, why did they have to wait for them. I don't think they're ashamed of Warning or the Trilogy, it's just people didn't take the trilogy well because it was different, and they weren't heavily popular when Warning came out and most people don't look back at past records.

The guitar sound on the trilogy is better IMO, it means that the bass has a lot more presence than it did in say AI or 21stCB.

I think the guitar sounds a little too clean, but overall it fits with the mood of the trilogy. I definitely wouldn't have wanted the Trilogy with a guitar sound like Dookie's. Experimenting is good and I'm fine with how the Trilogy was recorded.

I definitely love the bass though.

Lol have you heard how much Billie swears just when he's talking?! There's nothing forced about the swearing on the Trilogy.

I don't think forced is the right word. To me, the swearing doesn't flow as well as it used to. It works in a few songs, but a majority of it causes the songs to sound choppy. In my opinion, of course.

5) No one, and I mean NO ONE in the GDC can take the opinion of someone against the band or think another is better than Green Day, No one respects opinions here, the fuck is the deal? I personally think Sum 41 is a better band, for my own personal reasons. I think Deryck is a better writer than Billie. If I was to say that on youtube, I would be getting my shit pushed in for it, and it may happen here on this forum as well

I think this is completely untrue. Green Day is one of my favorite bands because of sentimental reasons, but in an actual top 10 list of my favorite bands, Green Day wouldn't even show up. What you said was a huge generalization. In fact, I got in an argument with one of my friends yesterday because I dissing Green Day, she got pissed, and said I "wasn't a true fan." In reality, Green Day saved my life and I've been a fan of their music since I was six. Jumping to conclusions is bad, dude. Not everyone here has a stick up their ass. In fact, a majority of the people here don't.

Wait are you talking about the trilogy?

I wasn't talking bout the trilogy tho i love the trilogy

But I'd hate if they kept the sound of Dookie for every album it'd be very boring...

Oh I thought you meant just Uno, Dos, and Tre. I love that Nimrod and Warning are so different and then Dookie and American Idiot are different as well.

As far as songs from Warning go, I wish they'd play Deadbeat Holiday at least once.

They've played American Eulogy (same tune) but I agree.

Dude, you kinda proved my point, your friend called you "not a true fan" for having a negative opinion about the band. That's my whole point in that aspect, she didn't respect your opinion. Green Day was the first band I got into when I was 5, my friend took Dookie from his Uncle, and we've listened to the band ever since, but people need to know, Green Day isn't perfect. People get shitty when someone says things like "I like 21st Century Breakdown" or "Nightlife is actually an alright song". I like 21stCB and Nightlife but some people can't handle an opinion that's different from their own. I acknowledge and respect what you said, but you proved my point.

2) it's pretty the same thing for everyband and artists nowadays. people only know the hits and they got to their concert and claimed to be fans. that's not only happening with Green Day.

3) who cares if people like this don't bother to look older songs. if you know them and you enjoy a lot the songs from Insomniac, etc.. then it's all good for you but don't complain because some people don't know the older ones. no one gives a shit.

4) same as 3)

5) maybe some people do but not everyone like you said. obviously the favorite band of the majority here is Green Day because we're on a GD forum but a lot of them see Green Day as their second, third, etc.. favorite band. some don't even like them anymore and are still here. don't put anyone on the same shit. and there's a Sum41 thread if you want to share with fans there. i personnaly agree that there are more better songs writers that Billie Joe but still my fav band is GD because their music means something to me not only the lyrics. it's not all about this.

GD complains

2) everybody agree about this it's not unpopular. but from the band point of view, they probably prefer when people in the crowd are going crazy and knows the lyrics than when few people are singing because it's a new song than anybody knows. actually when you're at the show you don't really give a fuck if it's new or not you're just going crazy. and i swear they'll keep that kind of setlist with the biggest hits until they die. not gonna change any soon.

3) maybe they were just having fun in the studio.

Billie said himself he is addicted to playing music - I think he was having fun in the studio whilst tre was captaining a boat.

I am fro Australia & they can play any song they want as long as they friggin come in 2013.

I work with people everyday that have addictions - lets not under estimate the enormity of billies situation - he doesn't owe us anything..

Green Day have been my favourite band for my entire life. I was first introduced to music with Green Day and ever since they've been my favourite. Best band of all time? Led Zeppelin. The Beatles. AC/DC. My favourite is Green Day. And I'd put them on a top 25 bands of all time list because they completely changed the 90s with Dookie, and American Idiot completely changed the radio and its airwaves after 9/11. They took what the Dixie Chicks were OFF the radio for, and got them back on the radio along with all of the other bands and songs that were banned because they were bold enough to take a stand, a stand that was too popular for radio stations to turn down. Whether or not they're my favourite band, they'd be on a top 25 list in my book regardless. But they aren't the best.

I think it just depends on what perspective you take or what aspect you look at. I think BJ is great at boiling things down into simple, catchy phrases, like a ZIP file, and at using unexpected and unique diction to make the lyrics more vibrant. The same goes for his riffs. I'm sure Deryck is better at other parts of song writing, but I can't really vouch for him due to my limited exposure to Sum 41. Not that I don't like them :)

4) I live in Australia, so we have a longer wait for Green Day to come over here, but when they do, they set list is very, very, very ordinary. I could guess the full Australian set list for where i am and I'd like to say I'd be at least 80% right with my prediction. I saw videos in Europe, America, Russia that got super rare songs like "The Judges Daughter", "Armatage Shanks", "One of my Lies", "Stuck With Me"...the song that caught me by surprise when they played it in 2009 was "Coming Clean" but that's pretty much staple to the set now sooooooooo... I would KILL to see "Stuck With Me" and "Scattered" live. They need to branch out their set list, and for fuck sake BRING BACK SONGS ON "WARNING"!!!!!!!!

Anyway, that's my rant about the GD fanbase and the band themselves, fell free to tell me how much of a piece of shit I am and how I'm not a real fan...because you'd only be proving my points about the GDC

I live in Australia to - I think we should think ourselves lucky if the trilogy songs they currently play stay in our setlist when the guys finally come because you know nobody in Australia besides the dedicated fans even know there is a trilogy. Not sure where you live but I have heard a total of two trilogy songs played on the radio. Can you imagine billie in a packed stadium singing DRB - as epic as that would be & how I wish for it - there would probably be only a section of the pit that has actually heard it - As stated in cuatro - people come to hear green day play the hits - & I can't friggin wait.

I saw them in 2009, but the set list was ordinary, the only surprising song was coming clean and a couple songs he played Acoustic. I'm defiantly going to see them play when they come back but I want a more complex set list, because their shows are too predicable now. The Irving Plaza show in 2012 was a great example of songs that would be rad to see live like "409 in your Coffeemaker" "Stuck With Me" and "Brat", in 2009 they only played the hits, and I don't mind that it's just too predictable, if you know what I mean.

I know plenty of people who don't like Green Day but they knew about the trilogy. As for the radio play, when Uno was about to be released, when I was in class, my teacher had the radio on, and they were playing most of Uno

I can understand Loss of Control, but I've always thought that Walk Away's lyrics (in the verses not that pathetic chorus) were fantastic.

Other than the quote I posted, I completely agree. That song is very emotional and I love listening to it.

Edit: wow, I just re-read everything I've missed. I actually really like this thread. It's nice to see some other opinions floating around. :) People aren't always agreeing, but there's respect here. No name calling, no fighting, it's all good.

Yep I am not having ago at you - the two songs I heard on the radio were from UNO - I would also like a more diverse setlist - but the point I am trying to make is the vast majority wouldn't know the songs & they have come to see the guys perform songs they don't know - new or old.

I am trying to think & maybe LIAM could help with the song but I am pretty sure billie went to play a song in Brisbane in 2009 & nobody new it so he played something else .

Yeah I get your point, but playing songs people may not know would encourage them to look back on the past records and listen, at least I did anyway. I didn't know the first two records existed until I saw a video of them performing at a German festival in 2000, they played Knowledge and I thought it was rad so I did some research and I really love those albums. (Still waiting for my copy of 39 to come in the mail...fuckin post :/ )

I saw the show in Melbourne and it was good, but the setlist was to obvious most of the way through.

Do you know what song he tried playing? Because the played The judges Daughter some where in America on the 21stCB tour and You can barely hear anyone singing along, and it was good quality as well, so I don't think they'd be afraid of playing songs that aren't well known
