tvrman
I've just sat down for my first listen of Tre................How am I going to manage to listen to the rest of the album when all I want to do is listen to Brutal Love a hundred times in a row? IMO you need to listen to Tre a few times to appreciate it, so you will get to hear BL again soon. There again on your ipod you could create a playlist called Tre with just one track in it and hit the shuffle button so you can still be surprised each time it plays. Mykee Mexx
Biilie said in an interview that is was about a kid that his son went to school with. His parents were transexual (I believe) and they cut off their son's penis so he couldn't be identified with either gender. He would always go by a different name, and Train was one of the ones Bille wanted to right about. It´s a sick story...
Ana.
Wow, I never knew that about A little boy named train, it breaks my heart. How will I ever jam to this song again, now that I know it's background.

Travis
I've just sat down for my first listen of Tre................but I have to pause unexpectedly because OH MY GOD Brutal Love is so wonderful  . It could be in the running for my favourite Green Day song of all time. It's beautiful. How am I going to manage to listen to the rest of the album when all I want to do is listen to Brutal Love a hundred times in a row? I'm gonna try Repeat it all day, every day! That song is amazing! Hermione
Well wow! I love the album. Definitely the calm after the storm of Dos, the band were right when they said it was reflective. And when they said it was epic. Brutal Love is absolutely gorgeous, an epic, beautiful, dark showtune! Musically I think it must be my favourite Green Day song to date, they've surpassed themselves. Never expected my favourite song of the Trilogy would be on Tre (I predicted - and was correct - that Dos would be my favourite then Uno then Tre just because of the overall styles of each album) but here it is. I also really love Dirty Rotten Bastards, some kind of crazy mixed up epic Irish jig but somehow it works . Big fan of the slower/ballad type songs too, especially The Forgotten and also X-Kid and Drama Queen (VERY happy with the studio version, finally heard it and I approve. Love the piano on it). Another favourite is Amanda because it just sounds awesome, and Missing You with that perfectly simple chorus. The rest is all good too, I wasn't expecting much from Sex Drugs And Violence after hearing the scorn for it but I like it! It's got a lovely catchy melody and I love how Mike randomly pipes up in the middle with that great line Overall a beautiful album and a fitting end to the Trilogy. With the full arc of the story/journey complete the Trilogy seems that much more interesting and makes more sense. I'm really glad they decided to release this music in this way and I'm going to enjoy listening to it all for a long time. Biilie said in an interview that is was about a kid that his son went to school with. His parents were transexual (I believe) and they cut off their son's penis so he couldn't be identified with either gender. He would always go by a different name, and Train was one of the ones Bille wanted to right about. Interview for Little Boy Named Train, end of page. www.greendayauthority.com/articles/163/5/ I don't think that's it. I think Billie's saying one of the child's parents was born a hermaphrodite (ie born with both male and female sexual parts), and their parents had their penis cut off so they could be raised as a female. But they wanted to be acknowledged as a male their whole life. So then when they grew up and had a child of their own, they decided with their partner that they wouldn't impose a specific gender on the child so they just didn't identify them as a boy or a girl or give them a set name. It was the parent's penis that was cut off (because they were born a hermaphrodite), not the child's. Am I right about this or am I reading it wrong? Could someone check? Bastard of 1967
And did anybody else notice that 99 Revolutions sounds almost exactly like Lazy Bones in the first maybe 10 seconds?! When I listened to it first I thought: WTF? But it's really just 10 seconds or so. But I really love Tré, it's just the way I had hoped it to be. Great catch -- The two percussion intros sound identical, right down to the tempo Mr. Cool is using. I call bookends (again) -- Lazy Bones being the "I'm too worn out to give a shit", contrasting with 99Revs "I've got my mojo back and I'm pulling myself out of my hole". I just want to say that as much as I deeply admire and appreciate reviews like Melissa Webster's, I think it's overindulgent and kind of irrelevant to steep Tre and the trilogy as a whole in such a concrete narrative. There are songs that very frankly aren't meant to speak to each other. The band is on record (I can't remember exactly where) in some of the interviews after the trilogy was first announced that the entire trilogy is indeed a concept album, just without named characters to connect things up. That's where I start approaching my own interpretation of the music, and I don't fault Melissa for taking a similar approach -- especially when the resulting analysis is well-supported by the lyrics, the music, and the band's own promotion. Anyway, in the end, so what? If the album(s) mean more to you by challenging you to find connected meanings between the songs, awesome. If not, if you're of the school that thinks that the songs weren't intended to speak to each other, then ignore the deeper reviews and enjoy the records for how they hit you on the surface. It is obviously up to interpretation but I think he is singing about periods. Its about teenagers (especially celebrity females) who grow up and take on the role of the attention-seeker by copying what is happening around them. That line is a metaphor for growing up and being cast into a world that can destroy many of these individuals. I don't understand why it is wrong to talk about subjects such as this. In fact, this is one of my favorite lines in the whole trilogy.I think you nailed it. It's also not the first time he's sung about periods. FBHT's "Red Tide" is the other one that jumps out at me -- "Are you REALLLLY mad at me or are you just on the rag?" the credits say "All words by Billie Joe Armstrong. All music by Green Day except "Brutal Love" written by Billie Joe Armstrong and Sam Cooke".Awesome! Brutal Love isn't a rip-off, it's a fucking salute. disappearing_boy_39
Sounds like BillIe Joe just got the idea to name a song "A Little Boy Named Train" from that story. He said himself that the lyrics are auoiographical.

Bastard of 1967
Ok y'all, got an update on how 99 Revolutions has hit me that I've also added to my capsule summary of the album a few pages back. This thought occurred to me over the weekend -- listen where the backing vocals add emphasis in the chorus on 99 Revs and try to volume-down the rest of the vocals in your mind. What repeats over, and over, and over again is: "Revolution's tonight." "Revolution's tonight." "Revolution's tonight." Now let's look at the last time Billie wrote about something happening "tonight" and what pops up? Oh Love. "Tonight my heart's on the loose." In this lyrical contrast you discover the transformation our nameless narrator has undergone. I call bookends yet again.Sounds like BillIe Joe just got the idea to name a song "A Little Boy Named Train" from that story. He said himself that the lyrics are autobiographical.I think by "autobiographical" he sees a part of himself echoed in the poor kid he's singing about -- the child's threefold identity crisis (I'm a mess; I know what I've done but don't understand why I do it; I don't even know who the hell I am) is his own. I think the song is just about any kind of identity crisis and Billie got the idea for the song and title from the kid's story. The song isn't explicably about the child from Billie's son's school. I'll have to look more closely at the lyrics when I get the CD book tomorrow.
Anja
Dirty Rotten Bastards is pure fucking SEX! If I see them play it live, I'll go mental! I listened to Tre the first time while I was on the plane to London for the musical last Thursday. It's got its fillers, I have to say, but it's by miles better than Uno (and Dos as well altough I do enjoy Dos). Right now my favorites would be Brutal Love, X-Kid, Walk away, Sex Drugs and Violence and Dirty Rotten Bastards. The Forgotten is slowly growing on me. 99 Revolutions I've liked since the live shows but it's a LOT better live. The rest is either meh, plain boring or alright. But I've only listened to the album 3 times or so, I'm sure it will grow on me. I can honestly say that this is my favorite of the three and will be played a lot (unlike Uno). P.S. That part after 1:40 in Drama Queen sounds like a Christmas jingle to me
solongfromthestars
I think digging really deeply into the songs is awesome, but my only issue is that some people really don't make clear that their interpretation is personal - they just state it like it's a fact and then people assume that it is. I'm not talking about anyone specifically but it's just something that I've noticed a lot. Anyway, most of the songs I didn't like so much on Tre have really grown on me. I don't think I'll ever like Little Boy Named Train (musically) but you never know I guess. 8th Avenue Serenade is my favourite.
