Femme Gauche
Lady Cobra's rap is the devil on Billie's shoulder going "yeah, yeah, come on boy, I know you wanna do it...." The rap lyric near the end "I run the show" tells you everything you need to know: St. Jimmy is back, and it's not the "everybody's fun time" St. Jimmy. This time it's dangerous, and it's real. Yeah, I made a comment awhile back about her not being a real person in the song, per se, as much as an idea, and in my mind I very much thought of her as a St. Jimmy. Good to see I'm not the only one who thinks that. I think the general feeling about this album is that it is a sign of a lot of darkness, and while I do believe it does show a lot of darkness, I don't think that this is the sort of tragic, end-of-the-world, ticking-time-bomb kind of darkness that everyone is saying, and that there is also a good deal of superficially just fun to be had. When I first listened to the album, it was very dark and very sexy. (Well, it still is that, but the feeling isn't so strong now that I've listened about 25 times). But I feel like I can have a lot of fun listening to this, too. And I feel like... it does also come from a place of enjoying things... They say that it is like a party that sort of goes to hell, and that's pretty much the vibe I get. There is craziness, but it isn't as though it is all, 100% bad. EDIT: woohoo for my 2000th post. So yeah while these songs can maybe represent and express exile from 'youth', the fun and spontaneity is about that expression, not about the content. Times where they're revisiting their earlier stuff is not - to me - about desperately trying to hold on to youth, but about going to first principles, finding that place where there were no particular expectations of them, where they were free. I think that on these albums, they've totally succeeded in finding that free place - they are having fun, regardless of how dark the subject matter is. This. Bolded text in particular. spark in the night
it really is a dark album. I'll have to thoroughly check, but to my knowledge I think this album has the most drug references of any GD album. (Again, I'll have to actually check every song, but I can't recall as many drug/drinking/abuse songs on one album as what's on DOS) And in interviews Billie kept saying it's the party album, it's the party album. The "party" I think is the smokescreen, covering up the dark, downward spiral that's consuming Billie. It's really sad, like it really hurts :/ And I really think this whole Lady Cobra thing is a bad influence. I don't think she's that great. And Billie kept praising Text Messaging Slut. I think that is one of the dumbest songs/music videos I've ever seen. Just disgusting, and not cool rap. It's just utter trash. The more I listen to this album the more the songs are growing on me. Still don't like Nightlife. Dislike Lady Cobra though it gets stuck in my head often.

She's from Pinole and they've known each other for a long while. They grew up in the same scene and share roots, even if they've taken their bands in different directions. So even if her singing isn't the best, she's on Dos because she as a person is important to the band members.

And in interviews Billie kept saying it's the party album, it's the party album. The "party" I think is the smokescreen, covering up the dark, downward spiral that's consuming Billie. It's really sad, like it really hurts :/ Party doesn't mean nothing but good clean fun, they made it clear there was a lot of darkness to it. But that doesn't mean that the creative process was that way. And with Green Day's music there is the content - what the song is about - and then there is the feeling, the performance of it, all that. And I still think they were having a lot of fun, and it shows. Particularly with the way they so skillfully navigated several different genres/periods of rock history. And I really think this whole Lady Cobra thing is a bad influence. I don't think she's that great. And Billie kept praising Text Messaging Slut. I think that is one of the dumbest songs/music videos I've ever seen. Just disgusting, and not cool rap. It's just utter trash. I listened to that song, and I thought it was stupid, but I can see why he would like it, because there is that sort of ridiculousness and humor to it. I'm not sure how to explain it but it is something I see as being in Green Day music a lot, as well. (for a long time). She says she is the devil on his shoulder, but I don't really think she's to blame for any problems... It's just a general climate and internal struggles that go on. blitzkriegdeb
Lady Cobra's someone who grew up in the same area/scene as the guys. She's a successful tattoo artist who also has a side band. For fucks sake, you're calling her a bad influence? Why? What proof do we have the Lady Cobra is a bad influence? Mystic Knights is just a fun little side band she does, just like Green Day does with Foxboro. Obviously Billie/the band are fans of her & her band, and that's probably why she was picked. Billie knew she could rap (or at least attempt it) and that was the part he was looking for, just like he did with Kathleen Hanna in Letterbomb. Sorry to come off sounding like a douche, but seriously, I don't understand the hate for her. Everyone has their own taste and you either like her music or you don't, that's whatever, but to call her a bad influence? That's jumping the shark if I've ever seen it. captain peroxide
I've now listened to this album in its entirety about 10 times, and I've come to the upsetting conclusion that it's pretty mediocre. A lot of the songs are somewhat formulaic and uninspired, with nothing all that memorable going on in them. No catchy riffs or melodies, just predictability. There's also not a lot of passion in most of Billie's vocal performances, and it just seems like the record is stuffed with filler. Notable exceptions are Fuck Time, Lazy Bones, Stray Heart, Wow! That's Loud, and Amy. Other than that, besides a few of the guitar solos, I can't hear anything super special or interesting going on with this record. It doesn't feel like there's very much joy in it, which is confusing, because ¡Uno! sounded like they had a fucking blast making it.

farley drexel hatcher
I don't think st jimmy has anything to do with this album and I still think people are finding far too much of a narrative in these songs, like I said i sense an air of general desperation but that is just opinion, it still pisses me off when people assume they know exactly what the songs are about. Seem to be seeing a lot of people acting that way on here without even voicing it as a personal opinion. At the end of the day we know nothing of their lives, we don't even know how close together or in what order the songs were written, yet people are SO sure of the story they tell. We don't know how true songs are. A song could be totally one hundred percent autobiographical; it could also be a bunch of words that rhymed well. The point is we don't know so we really can't assume. People will still do it though.
