¡DOS! Album

I don't really know how you can say that. No passion? Give me a break. Aside from the fact that nothing the band does lacks passion (and Billie's current state of affairs is clear evidence of this), if you can't hear the passion in his voice in every song on the album I don't know what you've been listening to. Nothing sounds flat.

Why can't I say that. By Green Day standards, these songs are flat. Stop When The Red Lights Flash sounds like they made it in 10 minutes and threw it on the album, the same can go for Fuck Time and several other songs.

^ Great post right there.

Passion isn't measured though, by interviewing the band about the writing process and hearing what they have to say about it. You can't validate Dos as passionate by saying "well we know that's what kind of guys Green Day are." A good, passionate album can be felt by someone who has never heard of the band before.

I think unless you can look at Dos from outside a hardcore fan perspective and say, a person who has never heard of Green Day in their life can put on this album and think, the band is really emotionally invested in it, you can't really say Dos captures the energy of Dookie, American Idiot, or even Uno for that matter.

That's a good point, actually. It's definitely hard for me to take off my fan filter and review the albums without any bias. All I can say, is that as a Green Day fan, I hear the passion and the energy in the trilogy songs, and am surprised that other Green Day fans don't feel the same way. I don't think it's the same kind of energy that's captured on Dookie, AI or even 21CBD- because I do love that album. It just feels like them having a ton of fun and playing songs they love, and I like that. Not every song has urgency, but I feel like that's okay, because it's not really the point.

I'm with you 100% there, I think this is some of the most passionate music they've made in years. You know all those crazy solo's? You can't come up with and play stuff like that without passion, it doesn't work.

Of course you can "phone in" a solo, all it takes is a basic knowledge of a scale and the same two licks Billie-Joe has used in every solo since 1988.

I agree with this. I can't be properly objective about it, although I try, because I have been invested in this band's music since I was 12, so naturally I will probably like mediocre songs they do more than I would if it was another band. And I know it doesn't sound as urgent as Dookie, Insomniac or American Idiot, but as you say that's not the point. I love the Nuggets sound so I was always expecting this to be the best of the three records and Nightlife aside it's pretty good overall with a few standout songs. I can definitely see where people are coming from when songs like Stop When The Red Lights Flash, Makeout Party, Lady Cobra are described as filler because on the surface and on their own, they don't say anything or have much of a point. But like the Nuggets compilations, you put a bunch of throwaway songs together that come from the same loose fuzzy rock n roll place, and you have a good cohesive fun album.

No need for that last bit, I'm entitled to my opinion just as you are.

I kind of agree about SWTRLF, but I still enjoy listening to it.

The rest of the album is fucking awesome though. Which other songs do you think lack passion?

Well, I don't like to compare one album to another, but I think that Dos has it's own energy. And strictly from my opinion, listening to Dos is a fresh breath of air for me! I did enjoy Uno, but hearing Dos and the different sound of it was absolutely fantastic! :)

Oh, well not buying that.

You might want to buy that theory, because Billie himself said in an interview that the song Nightlife isn't even necessarily about girls, it's about all temptations like drugs or any "bad things." So in essence, Lady Cobra *does* represent that kind of bad influence on these albums, and from the writer's own perspective, it's not necessarily a sexual temptation even if that's how she's manifesting it.

Obviously technically you can, but the point I was making is that the guitar playing (including bass) is a lot more intricate in this album than we've seen recently, and the majority of the songs are really high energy so I don't really see how anyone can think it's 'flat'. People need to learn the difference between their opinion and fact.

No one can say this album is awful. No one can say this album is a masterpiece. You can say what you think of it.

And there are people who believe both sides of it.

Ah, I've just got to say...

Dos just completely blew my expectations out of the water, in a completely positive way. It has excited me more for the next album.

I'd also like to say, when I bought UNO I was forced to get the edited version, and it almost ruined it for me due to the shitty way it was done. But, I got DOS unedited, and it is just amazing.

And while we're off topic, I'd like to talk about the single(s): I figured since it had a CSI feature, there wouldn't be many, but here's my suggestion: I think a more exciting formal single (i.e., Stray Heart) would have been better, rather that Stray Heart. I love the song, mind you, but I think that a more unique and fun song, such as Lazy Bones, or Ashley would have made a better last minute single. In fact, Lazy Bones probably would have been fantastic. But eh, it was just fine, nonetheless.

Anyone noticed line in Lady Cobra "her black heart beats crimson and clover" and line in Nightlife "my black heart beats crimson and clover" ? :D think it's great...

It's driving me crazy not knowing if Billie or Lady Cobra came up with that line first, and who repeated it from who  It doesn't matter at all, but I'm OCD like that :D

Anyone else find it a bit weird how Billie has named Amanda Jones as this girl he basically wants to dominate? He didn't have to name her, and I understand it's a jokey song, but I just find it a bit unnecessary

Yeah, that's extremely strange.

It's a comedy song, nothing more, he used to moan adrienne's name in that part. He used to just make up the words! The song was written about a chant the American idiot cast used to do. Plus I jones is very unlikely to be her actual name.

Plus I think Ashley is also about this Amanda.

Wait, are you talking about Fuck Time? Either way, doesn't matter.

Even if it seems a little more than jokey, I still believe it is just good fun.

I mean... when I think about it a little more... it seems a little weird, but it's still just a song.

Do we know of who wrote Lady Cobra's bit in "Nightlife"? Whether she wrote it herself or Biliie wrote it and had her sing it as a guest. That'd fit kind of odd in my head knowing that Billie has written a rap :P

In the booklet it says all lyrics written by Billie Joe Armstrong, whith the exception of Nightlife, written Billie Joe and Monica Painter (Lady Cobra)...so I'm guessing it was a collaborative writing process :)

My album review for those who are interested.

See You Tonight: As an opener I really dig this songs soft and melodic sound. Billie’s voice is the stand out in this track. It sets the mood for the old garage rock sound to follow real well. (8/10)

Fuck Time: I fell this is the track that fully summarizes Green Days overal mood for this album. It has that old garage rock sound along with guitar solos, steady drums and bass that holds it all together so well. Billies laugh and moaning on the back round through out also adds to that signiture wild unpridictiable side we all love so much from the band. I do have one small gripe though, in my opion the whole “fuck time” lyric is on the cheesier side, but that’s not to say the song it’s self is bad at all. (7/10)

Stop When the Red Lights Flash: The begining to this song is really damn cool. Billie and Tre bring it in steady and fast just like their mid 90’s era records. Just like the rest of the record the vocals are reminecent of that good ol’ rock n’ roll sound I truly adore. (7/10)

Lazy Bones: This was the first track that stood out when I first put the record on. It sounds just like something off American Idiot and that’s a wonderful thing. That album is such a good album and holds a special place in my head. This track also seems to switch it up a good amount muscially to easily keep my attention through the whole song. The lyrics stand out as well they have a sort of bad attitude to them, something I can relate to at times being only 20 years old and trying to get a hold on life. (9/10)

Wild One: I first heard this song live at the Echoplex show and it blew my mind. I knew from the first minute into the song I would love the studio version as well. The slow and heavy pace of the entire song along with the great backing vocals is a new but such a welcome sound. It shows Green Day still has room to grow and expand their sound without confusing the hell out of their fans. (9/10)

Make Out Party: By far this is my favorite song off the entire album. It’s a bare bones rocker that seems to sum up Green Days dangerous/wild and sexual tensions their live performances and music hold deep within... Billie in particular. Billies vocals on this track really shine and always replay in my head even after the song has ended. Oh, and of course I can’t forget to mention Mike yet again delievers a memorable bass line that shows his talent so well. Last but not least, that guitar riff...damn. (10/10)

Drama Queen: This track is a pretty cool track, it reminds me of the Replacements a bit in how they ventured from the straight up punk/rock sound to write a more mellow but lasting melodic track. (7/10)

Ashley: This track reminds me so much of something off Nimrod mixed with Insomniacs anger and jaded attitude. Definetely a welcomed sound in my head. I felt this speed and voracity was missing from a good portion of 21st Century Breakdown. It’s nice to see it’s return. (7/10)

Baby Eyes: This track too could gave been on American Idiot in my mind. As far as the sound goes at least. It’d a harder track than some others in recent years and is what I loved about AI so much. It had a sharp hidden edge that made it so memorable. The ending guitar part after the pause and Billie kicks in with “I was born to kill!” is very Green Day and such a sweet sound to my ears. (7/10)

Lady Cobra: This track is so cool to me. Totally something like they did with the Foxboro Hottubs. That old garage rock vibe and sound fits Green Day so well. I really hope that they continue with this sound in future albums. Oh, and that dirty guitar solo, gotta love that. (8/10)

Night Life: Now this track isn’t my kind of song at all. I honestly wish they left it off. The guest female vocalist just makes the track sound a but cheesy and overdone. I also think it kind of breaks the hard garage rock sound they had going so well through the album. But hey, I don’t knock em too hard for trying something different. (3/10)

Wow That’s Loud: Now this is a melody! I really love the vocal melody and deliver by Billie in this song. It shows why Green Day has so many memorable songs through out their entire history as a band. The song also has that old chugging guitar riff I’ve come to know Green Day so well by. (8/10)

Amy: I think this wraps up the whole album pretty well. It too has a very memorable melody. I also really enjoy the guitar tone and simplicity within this song . A very nice satifying way to cap off the record. (7/10)

Summary: Over all this is the record I’ve been wishing for since American Idiot. It explores some new territorty for the band and breaks way from their older sound just a bit, but also has some nice nods to the past that are always welcomed. You can tell they made this record a bit simplier and back to basics. It’s fun, fast, wild, and to the point. If I had to point out one thing I didn’t quite love I would say Night Life just didn’t fit to me. It’s not the kind of song I really enjoy and adds a small layer of cheese to the record, but again, I don’t knock Green Day for trying something new. This is their band and their music and I’m glad to say I’m here for the ride. I give the album as a whole an 8/10.

Got my album! It's definitely a grower.. at first I was like, meh didn't really grab me, but on repeated listens I love it! But then I've always wanted the Tubbies to release another album.. Fave song has to be Amy.. it's not often my name is the name of a song :D Can't wait to hear Billie sing it to me next year (Hey a girl can dream right? haha)

UK Chart news: Dos is currently no.4 in the midweeks, so quite good considering the lack of promotion!

I've taken to seeing the name "Ashley" being used as a metaphor for a drug, like alcohol or meth. I think he uses the idea of shunning an old friend to present the idea of (trying) to shun an old lifestyle or habit.

I feel absolutely the same. It may have some FHT essence about it, but other than that I find it different and exciting when I listen to it.
