Green Day's Music vs. Lyrics

Generally I love both the lyrics and music of all of their songs. Except for the few that I don't like, but I still feel like the music and lyrics are about equal.

There are two songs where I love the lyrics but not the music: Hold On and Walking Alone. And both times the melody and overall tune is fine.... but that harmonica  If they could just take out the harmonica (and replace it with just the guitars in Walking Alone) that would have been great.

And then Alligator - I like the music, but the words are really stupid. I can't get into it because of that.

But I think it's just those three songs. Billie's a great lyricist, and their music is equally wonderful. :)

Like the music, but not the lyrics:

-"One Of My Lies". I don't like songs about 'getting high.' Just not my cup of tea.

Yes.

One of My Lies is one of the songs I'm on the fence about. I actually really like the lyrics other than "all I wanna do is get real high", but that's kind of enough to ruin the song for me.

I dunno, it just seems like they were kind of lazy and just used the first thing that came to mind that rhymed with 'lies'.

Then again, that also kind of makes sense with the song... so it's hard to say.

I just wish sometimes it didn't have it.

but other times, when I'm goofing around, I love singing it. but then it makes the more serious verses not sound as serious...

I'm bumping this up now that the trilogy has been released. There are a lot of new songs that I like either the lyrics or the music, but not both.

I like the music for Wow! That's Loud, but don't really care for the lyrics.

Same with Nightlife. It was interesting to hear a rap song, but I wish it was more like a funny rap or something

I think Fell For You's lyrics could be a little better. I don't know "pissed in the bed" kind of ruined it for me.

I really like Lazy Bone's lyrics. the music is okay, nothing special though. The lyrics make the music more bearable, though. If they were sucky lyrics, I wouldn't like it. Kind of like what I said with Westbound Sign (although I think Lazy Bone's is better than Westbound Sign).

I like Amy's lyrics. They're not my favorite, but I like them. I don't like the way the song came out, though. I like the melody, but it's not really a track I like listening to. I'd probably like it live if Billie does it on acoustic.

It's easier to find songs where I don't like the lyrics but love the music than when I like the lyrics but don't like the music. The lyrics definitely make a song sound better. People just don't write really amazing lyrics and make the melody crap! It's mostly the other instruments I don't like, the melodies are great, though.

This may be getting repetitive :P But I love Rotting's music (it's different and beautiful) but I don't like the lyrics because of the whole dying part... not even mention Billie Joe's way of sing it.

I like Rotting - both music and lyrics but Billie's singing makes me laugh every time I hear it. :D

I don't like Before The Lobotomy lyrics....music is ok but I hate that "brutality of reality" line. It's the worst rhyme ever :P

To me there's not really a specific one i can think of. If anything, maybe Makeout Party because it's a married middle aged dude singing about playing Truth or Dare and it just seems bizarre, but i know it's just all in good fun so i don't really get hung up on it. Also Having a Blast. I used to love it for the pure anger i felt but the whole shooting everyone in sight made me think about the tragic shootings that have happened and made it kind of uncomfortable to listen to.

To me, if the music is good then it's a good song, but it has got to be pretty catchy. If the lyrics are good and the music isn't i just won't be able to really get into it. It's just might as well be poetry. But if a song has great lyrics and music then that's what makes a great song!

I don't like Carpe Diem, Fuck Time, Kill The DJ and Sex, Drugs and Violence simply because the lyrics make me cringe.

I don't really give a fuck about the lyrics. I mean, if the lyrics are cool I'm happy but I really don't care if the lyrics is stupid.

I like the music of American Eulogy, it's got an interesting structure and the lead bit in the middle is fantastic but the lyrics are just trying to squeeze like the entire American nation into a song and it's just muddled and self-indulgent, also crucially it doesn't actually say anything.

Don't like the music of Warning but like the lyrics, they just ripped it entirely from The Kinks, it's probably the worst rip-off in their catalogue.

The lyrics don't say enough to you (in American Eulogy) because you don't understand them. You also seem to misunderstand that the reason for the "squeezed" lyrics is that the song is about massive hysteria... the urge to express as people from the working-class..

The only Green Day song in which I don't like the music in Rest. It's too slow and yet heavy and it drags...

Other than that, I love all of the music and every single word BJA wrote.

About Makeout Party, it's just Billie's abilitiy to write from different perspectives. Obviously the narrator is not Billie himself. Just try not to think about the fact that he's married or the shooting. Just listen to the music -_-

The music, lyrics, and melody compliment each other so well that I think something like this is really impossible for me.

I really love Brutal Love, but I don't like the lyrics. I just like how the words are spoken and the slow melody makes me want to slow dance. In my opinion, the lyrics are too repetitive.

OK since you've dragged up a post from last September. I understand the lyrics fine. They don't add up to anything beyond "bad stuff is happening" in the most general sense. What is the message of American Eulogy? Is it saying anything that American Idiot (the album) didn't? I also left that one other thing you said in. I don't know that you're going to be the best judge of what counts as valid criticism if you're willing to admit you love "every single word" Billie-Joe wrote.

The lyrics mean a lot to me. But it won't ruin a song if they aren't great. I love the music to Makeout Party put the lyrics are terrible. Makeout Party is my second favorite Green Day song (right behind See You Tonight) just because of the lyrics.

It doesn't say anything? What more do you need to say other than "I don't want to live in the modern world"?

I think the first half of American eulogy is pretty clearly about Hurricane Katrina, but that could be easy to miss because the album didn't come out until years after the incident. Nevertheless, Mass Hysteria mixed with the bridge seems to make that point fairly accessible. With Modern World I think we get more of a rallying call than anything. This section probably tried to show the disenfranchisement felt by the class of 13 watching the mess in the first half of the song develop and realizing they're doomed to be trapped in a financial struggle under the thumb of an aloof ruling class. I do see how it gets very loaded with messages though.

It doesn't matter what it's about though. Someone could be singing about a very important topic (gay rights, for example), but if the lyrics are "go gays, gays are awesome, they should have rights, yay" or something like that, I don't see how it's wrong someone doesn't like the lyrics! It doesn't mean they don't like the message, it just means they don't like how it was written. It also doesn't mean they don't understand the song.

Well you can't be wrong about liking or disliking something, though you can be more or less informed. I'm just suggesting that before someone writes off a song they put the time into learning about it equal to the amount of time someone else put into writing it. However I'm not suggesting anyone here is guilty of not doing that, it's just my own opinion.

Troublemaker's lyrics are very silly and kind of fall flat. But at the same time It's my favorite on the whole trilogy (well, top 3 atleast)!!! It's a really catchy awesome song but yeah those lyrics.... phew.

Also Fuck Time is soooo rapey makes me cringe but I admit it's a great GD song.

Not talking for me but my brother is a hard Republican so it's kind of hard for him to listen to the whole American Idiot album that is completely Anti-Bush, even though he likes the music...He particularly doesn't like American Idiot...He also doesn't like 21st century breakdown for the same reasons and for example "Homeland Security could kill us all", well my brother doesn't agree with that...So basically they are a lot of Green Day songs he doesn't like for political reasons even if he likes the music.
