IHateYou
ONE MINUTE? YOU'RE GOING TO GIVE ME ONE FUCKING MINUTE to review UNO! ? I've been listening to Green Day since 1990-fucking-4. This review is from a guy who has made release day a holiday since 1997. (Sorry, bought Insomniac used and got Dookie from that Columbia mailing order thing). I am ritualistic in that I listen to the previous release on the way to buying the new one (which was a pain in the ass this time around). I live in the States and my local store put it out a day early as always. For context on my review, I'm an oldschool purist. American Idiot was pretty good, I made a point to avoid New York during musical showings, and I threw 21CBD under the bus pretty much the day it came out. I FUCKING LOVE UNO! First impression cracking CD open, great, there's Jason's photo under "Quatro." So he is legitimately all over this album like he is a band member now. I don't like that. He is a mediocre musician and it shocks me that they wait to initially invite him into the band officially until they release a three album trilogy emphasizing a THREE-PIECE band. He didn't grow up with them and stands out too much. This has always pissed me off. Artwork: The artwork in general is awesome though. Lyrics are in a nimrod. spraypaint type font which is cool. Band photos are cool minus Jason. The packaging/artwork on the whole reminds me of nimrod. from the X over the eyes to the "stripped down" absence of any album-specific logos that they've been obsessed with since Warning. The back photo is from that Halloween show in New York. No opinion on that other than I couldn't get into that show. Music: I don't want to go song by song because that seems unfair as the songs are so fresh. However, I'm VERY surprised how much better the songs translate into studio, as I was pretty unimpressed at first listen to most of these songs from youtube live clips of Austin and New York. Tracks 1-3 are a punch in the face, all amazing in a row, the first stretch of 3 winners in a row since Warning or American Idiot. Kill the DJ is the first instance of rip-off inspiration with some Sandinista! clash and that little whisper "boyyyy" stealing from "Miss You" by the Stones. Fell For You rocks and no it's not an MTX cover. Sweet 16 is next standout track that almost made me cry. Beautiful guitarwork which is what I always felt was Billie's true new style and here to stay starting with Warning and songs like "Shoplifter." This song will be the opener when Billie goes on that solo acoustic (with Jason...) tour while recuperating from the band's first one or two rejections into the RnR HOF because they're just a punk band with a big ego overshadowing some amazing music (see recent events). Billie always worked better as a balladeer, meaning, the best Green Day songs are the ones that work on acoustic. Also, BEST LYRICAL CONTENT on the album on Sweet 16. Billie, we never asked you to use words like effigy in your lyrics. Honestly, those stupid songs suck. Oh, yeah, also Angel Blue is cool too. Sounds like nimrod. Rusty James- good shit. Great backing vocals that like those that drew me to the band with Dookie. Oh Love is dogshit. They drop the ball on the LAST fucking song!!! Jesus. I don't buy into the band's pre-release hype anymore because they do not and never knew how to interview. Is this the power pop record? I don't even remember. Anyways, Oh Love is just a continuation of Know Your Enemy in that it's too long, too slow, and too repetitive. Overall, still some great songs are made too long with an added middle 8 or extra chorus. That's new Green Day forcing to write no more 2.5 minute songs. I caught onto the trick though. Billie has rekindled his knack for insatiable quantities of beautiful vocal melody, which has always been the band's secret weapon. The instrumentation and mix are gorgeous on UNO! You can hear the bass breathe and the harmonies soar way more behind these single-coil boutique amp guitar tones. But don't believe the hype: Billie in typical promo hype mode told some magazine this is the first time he's ditching the big Marshall halfstack sound, that he's been doing it for whatever years. They did it on Warning. Also, much of nimrod I swear was done on Telecasters. I got over the loss of Blue dominating albums long ago, because it happened long ago. Then I had to deal with the loss of Mike's chops. Okay. I'm finally getting used to that, now that I can at least hear his bass in the mix. I can't wait for the tour. I expect an extended "oldies" section of the setlist as they push gags like "Knowledge" farther into the past. Maybe they'll even finally kill off "King for a Day." Sidenote, I really really fucking hate hearing Welcome to Paradise with two Les Paul Juniors. I also dislike Jason playing on a lot of those old songs. He thickens up "Welcome to Paradise" well, but songs like "Basket Case" can do fine with just Billie and Blue, Mike, and Tre. Happy release day all! Love, I Hate You. WrongWayToSalvation
@ PaulS iDos! and iTre! will have a lot more variety than iUno!. iDos! will have a fresh and different sound than past GD records and include acoustic songs (See You Tonight and Drama Queen) and probably their most experimental song since Misery (Nightlife). iTre! will have balads, old school Green Day songs, mini epics etc. iUno! seems to be the only album that's straight forward with mostly just one sound with little variety. iDos! will be better received than iUno! and iTre! seems like it'll be the most acclaimed of the 3. iUno! will be the least mentioned when it comes to the triolgy. Sounds good to me! (Although I still feel like I'll like Uno better than Dos, even if Dos has more intriguing variety) Wonder why Amy wasn't mentioned as an acoustic song? It's interesting that Dos opens with a softie and closes with a softie, what with it being a party album.

Mandeax
Had it for a week now and I'm obsessed. So far my top faves are: Nuclear Family Let Yourself Go Loss Of Control and finally Kill The DJ. The rest I haven't really gotten into as much as those four, and Oh Love REALLY annoys me now
Homero
I might have just listened to Troublemaker 8 times in a row. And I might have danced round the room while doing it. And it might be playing for the 9th time now. How brilliant is this song? It's filled with killer lines from start to finish. This bit... Easy cum (highly amused that it's spelled that way) and go gonna go it alone Knock yourself out with a shot of Patron I wouldn't say I'm straight 'Cause I'm bent out of shape From now til death do we party Just before it's too late ...is possibly the most badass thing I've ever heard, it's like some kind of fabulous rap or something. And that gorgeous freaky guitar before it! Not to mention the pure awesomeness of "BMXcellent tits" and "I wanna get inside of you". Officially in love with this song! Finally someone who loves the song as much as I do!
Heather.
I still find it odd that there's no ad for Uno on iTunes... especially looking at the Pink, Mumford, Killers, etc. ads.... I was definitely expecting one to pop up by now, or sometime this week. Maybe they're saving that kind of promo for Dos and/or Tre. Not sure how costly all this marketing is... but this should just be standard, no? It's not even under featured new releases.
teenagetraces
I've been listening to the album basically during all of my free time since it was able to be streamed and to be completely honest, it only has one "bad" song, which is Loss of Control. I'm sure a lot of people love it because it is (like all of the other songs on the album) incredibly catchy. The album is basically flawless. Best song, no doubt, Stay the Night. Fuck, I've been wanting to hear a studio version since last August and when I heard it, I'll admit that I teared up a little. Fuck me for doubting Green Day. Clockwise
Loss of Control is one of my favorites. It's instantly relatable really, and the chorus is super fucking catchy.

Not sure how costly all this marketing is... but this should just be standard, no? It's not even under featured new releases. Well, technically, that would be advertising something that isn't available for sale. I only see the Mumford album listed under best-sellers, and that's solely because of pre-ordering. The Pink and Killers albums have been out for a week. Maybe in 90 minutes it'll change? I don't know where to buy it. There's a Target right by my house, which has it for $9.99 and with my Target card, I get 5 percent off, so it would be about $9.50. But then the GD Facebook posted that coupon to get it for $7.99 at Best Buy. Obviously, that's cheaper for the album, but I can't figure out if I'd spend more on gas getting to Best Buy than I'd save

Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap
Sweet 16 is growing on me, maybe as it's the only "soft" one on the album. I think the run of Angel Blue-Sweet-16-Rusty James is as good as the 3 track run that opens the album.
spacesauce
The Green Day FB page just posted a Best Buy coupon. If you print it off you can get UNO for $7.99. I think this is what I'm going to do. Also, Amazon MP3 store has UNO for $5. I don't know why it hasn't been advertised on iTunes yet. My guess is since they have been doing this Nokia thing or whatever, they probably are not Apples top priority, though I would think they would have a banner once the album is available.
