¡UNO! Album

I kind of find Troublemaker boring, and like if something was missing. I think it would have been an amazing song if instead of repeating 4 times 'wanna be a troublemaker' they said it 3 times and them broke in an epic chorus.

I've been thinking about this ever since the Angry Birds preview. It's not bad because it does anything wrong, but because of what it doesn't do. The chorus feels too downplayed, like they wanted to explode, but couldn't. If it had pulled an FOD or Ha Ha You're Dead type of explosion, then I'm sure people would have liked it more.

That being said, I fucking love the song anyway. The verses are fun, the solo is awesome, and the little rap-style bridge that Billie pulls after the solo is just fucking great.

I'm trying to rank this album amongst Green Day's other work (as objectively as possible given it's so fresh...), and when I do that I tend to remove Dookie and AI from the conversation altogether, because those are both such masterpieces of the catalogue that I don't even like to include them in the conversation when it comes to the rest of Green Day's otherwise sound work. They're untouchables, so instead I'm looking at the new album in conversation only with 39/Smooth, Kerplunk, Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning, and 21CB. And for me, Warning is #1, and I would put ¡Uno! right there alongside it as the best album of Green Day's standard non-generation-defining work. The only thing that separates those 7 albums from Dookie and American Idiot is popular appeal (closely related to their high musical quality, of course), and Uno is not going to have that.

Which leads me to the next point... Uno's lyrics aren't generation-defining or grabbing. The reason Green Day succeeded in grabbing the minds of two separate generations of teenagers in 1994 and 2004 is because they happen to release albums that, above all, spoke of personal alienation and disillusion. Many have said that Uno as a whole isn't quite "up to standard" in lyrics as we would like (I have a feeling we'll be getting that on Tre), though we do see it in sporadic bursts. "Hanging out all by myself, at least I'm in good company" --- that's the classic Green Day line that would rally a new generation of fans to connect with Billie Joe's writing. Whereas 21CB went *too far* with its lyrics, Uno has scaled waaaaaaaaay back, or else, is dealing with topics more distant to a younger generation. Rusty James, I feel, has awesome lyrics. It's one of my favorite songs, but it's nevertheless the song of a bitter middle-aged man. I love it, I feel it, but it's not going to speak to my soul the same way a cheesy song like BOBD might have when I was 14.

None of this matters necessarily, because Uno's music is plain and simple, fucking good. They're obviously writing what they feel, and it's only normal that they've finally stopped focusing so entirely on things like teenage alienation (although I guess Angel Blue is along those lines). That's why I connect it with Warning (and why I love both as my #1s)... Warning "bombed," some argue, because it was "too mature." Uno has a lot of silliness to it also, but it also has that slightly less adolescent feel.

I found myself agreeing with most of what you said. As a Green Day fan, I might be biased and feel like I have to love it because it's by my favorite band (not that I feel forced to like everything GD does but since they're my favorite band, I'll listen to this album more times and give it a chance which I wouldn't do if it was by another band) but if I wasn't a Green Day fan and was listening to this record for the first time, I don't think I would bother buying it or listening to it again (apart from maybe a few songs).

I never got either why everyone loves Sweet 16 so much either. I tend to skip it. It just sounds so candy pop-like *cringes* I do find the lyrics quite nice though but more because it's another 80 song and I always thought Billie writing about Adrienne was kinda sweet.

Green Day hasn't re-invented themselves with this record but I doubt they ever wanted to. I still like this album very much even if it's not gonna become my favorite. As posted above by michael1989, I would be slightly disappointed too if this was the only GD album for now and if we had to wait another 2-3 years for a new one but with two more albums coming up, I hope there's gonna be something for everyone in there.

I still love this album, don't get me wrong, but some songs to me have too much of a "b-side" sound.

Concerning the lyrics, I like that Billie is going back to a more personal style and away from the style of AI and 21st CB. What I like most is the reference to "86". I do find the amount of "fucks" a bit annoying though (although I like the angry tone of some songs, not gonna lie). But too many fucks in a song just make it sounds like he's trying too hard...

I absolutely agree with you, especially with what you said about giving the album a chance just because it's Green Day. This is exactly how I feel about it. Maybe I'll just put all the songs I like together from Uno, Dos and Tre and that way, I will have a Green Day album containing only songs I love. :P

I also found it difficult to give very low points for the songs in my review, because... well, it's Green Day. Although I pretty much hate Troublemaker and I wouldn't listen to it again, I couldn't give less than 3 points.

I think Troublemaker is awesome. Makes me think about Foxboro Hottubs!!! and to me it kind of prooves that they're not taking theirselves too seriously and that's what I love about them. but that's my humble opinion! :)

When it's all said and done and all three albums have been released, will they be considered as one big mega-album? The Clash's Sandinista! (another big, sprawling adventurous triple disc album with an exclamation point at the end of the title) is colloquially referred to as one album, instead of three seperate ones. Although you need a hell of a lot of free time and patience to listen to the whole thing in one sitting. Will this be ¡Uno, Dos, Tre! or ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tre! ?

lol I said this because i believe that american idiot has now been succeeded by the trilogy.

Now, it seems that they've finally gone away from American Idiot. They will atrract new fans with these albums. Just as they did when American Idiot came out.

Overall the album was just average.

There's nothing that impressed me at all, the only track I enjoyed was Let Yourself Go.

I am kinda upset as a fan for almost 12 years now I just don't like the direction they're going musically. I thought as a band they matured then they become this commercial pop-rock band... not feeling it at all. And did Billie say Uno! would sound like classic Green Day? :ermm: only track that came close was LYG.

Not gonna judge the next two but I'm not really that excited.

Uno Dos and Tre are considered as one studio album

can you send me a link to the conformation of this?

If i am correct... they are released on different dates and have 11-12 songs on each album.... that makes them separate albums.

Whoever say American Idiot or 21st Century Breakdown is a bad album should DIE........in my opinion.

21st Century Breakdown IMO is a horrid album.

Billie has said it in several interviews that it counts as one album...there's a new interview where he also says it, but it's in german, there Billie was asked whether this is really them being creative or a try to go away from their label and Billie answered that it's considered one album at warner, so it's definetly NOT a try to go to another label or anything ;) ...my internet connection is really bad at the moment and it takes me hours to even just send this post, so i can't look for an english interview where he said it at the moment, sorry

are you kidding? to me "sweet 16" sounds like it could be in 1039 smooth, "troublemaker" is a bit like "all the time", "carpe diem"-shennanigans, "Rusty James" could be in Nimrod, and "Fell for you" could be in Dookie....In my opinion Uno DOES seem influenced by other Green Day albums, how can you say it doesnt sound like their old stuff!!???

well... first i gotta say to the whole album (yes, these are 3 different albums with different musical styles): i think its a great album, not the BIG sensation like dookie & ai, but a really great message from a band in their best age: they're "riding the world like a merry-go-round" and i dont dislike the huge amount of "fucks" cause they're really fucking the world again. Billie joe shows us for more than 20 years that he's one of the biggest songwriters of our time.

Now to the second point i'd like to say...: i think troublemaker is the worst song on this record. but i think, dos! will go exactly in this direction and troublemaker and kill the dj are kind of forerunners of dos!. Do you agree with me, that dos! will sound like this and is kind of a bridge to the 2008-thing, foxboro hottubs???

Wow this place has changed alot since I posted last. I went off the band around 2007. I kind of skipped their last album for that reason, I must get to listening to that also.

But this new album is very good. A friend got me a copy, and I've been listening to it since. Will be picking it up. I'm aware that there's another two albums due as well? Interesting. They seemed to have gone back to an older style sound.

I doubt anyone remembers me, but who knows!

Okay I'm still holding out until Tuesday when I get it on box set, but I have some things planned.

In Monday's assembly, before we leave the principle always asks if anyone has any celebrations, and I'm gunna stand up and say that my celebration is that Green Day is releasing an album tomorrow.

I don't get it

All the news sites are saying Billie-Joe had a meltdown on stage because of a 'profanity laced tirade' and ended the set smashing his guitar

Sounds just like any gig on the Warning era tour
