Also, wicked cover Matt!

Please put it up!

Please post it! It's always far more interesting to hear why fans don't like records than it is for some reviewer who has to maintain the status quo of "Green Day aren't actually punk, they're uncool to actually like" etc. etc.

Alright, here it is. I'll give my general impression of the album first and then go through it song by song.

What really stuck out is how similar all the songs sound. I don't think any Green Day album has ever had so many similar songs on it. When you're listening to it from the beginning to the end and don't give it your undivided attention all the time, you sometimes don't even notice that a new song started. Some people might find this nice, but I think it's boring and it also isn't what I expect from a Green Day album. I want songs that sound different, different styles of music.

Now the lyrics... bit dissappointing, aren't they? So far, I've only found two or three lines that are quote worthy and even those aren't among the best of Green Day's lyircs, I only like them, because I can personally refer to them. The line that still makes me cringe is "The bullit that you asked for kill you to your death..." Kill you to death? Really?!

Lots of people might be excited about Green Day releasing three albums in such a short time and although we only know one of them yet, I dare to say that this wasn't such a great idea. Lots of songs have kinda weak lyrics and repetitive choruses that really annoy me and can destroy a whole song for me. If you're able to write a great verse, also take the time to make up your mind about a great chorus instead of repeting the same line over and over again. I think it might have been better to release one album with 16 or 18 great songs, instead of three albums all filled with a few good songs and a bunch of mediocre ones. But that's my opinion.

Nuclear Family

8/10

This is probably one of my favorite songs on the album. It makes me wanna dance and puts me in a good mood. I really like the melody of the whole song. But there are two reasons why it doesn't get a 10. First, the countdown at the end... sure it makes sense with the rest of the lyrics, but I don't like it anyway. It's something they could have done at concerts, but it seems weird in a recorded track. And secondly, the songs gets boring quite fast. I can't listen to it more than a few times in a row. On other Green Day albums, there are songs that I can listen to all day without a break, but as much as I like Nuclear Family, something about it bores me after a while.

Stay The Night

7/10

The song has great verses and a rather weak chorus. I don't even know why I don't like it, but it somehow doesn't flow with the melody of the verses. Nevertheless, it's one of the better songs on Uno.

Carpe Diem

7/10

This is a nice song, but there's nothing special about it. It sounds like a good B-side, but I'm not sure if it should be on an actual album. I listen to it once and I don't wanna listen to it again which is really weird considering it's Green Day. I've never been able to stop listening to Green Day songs after one listen. This didn't only happen with Carpe Diem, but with a few more songs on Uno too.

Let Yourself Go

7/10

This has been my favorite of the songs we got to listen to before the album was released. Yet, the chorus is so lame and ruins a good part of the song for me.

Kill The DJ

7/10

Kill The DJ has the potential to be an outstanding song, because it sounds different from everything Green Day have ever done. I really like the melody, but once again I don't like the chorus, because it is so boring. The huge amount of fucks, fuckings and fuckers don't make the song any better either.

Fell For You

7/10

One of the few songs with nice lyrics. I really like it, but it gets old very fast. I was tempted to give it only 6 points, but when I listen to it not more than a few times a day, I really like it.

Loss Of Control

6/10

This song contains two of my favorite lines off this album, but only because I can personally refer to them, not because they're really that great. One of them is "I'd rather go to the funeral than this high school renunion", the other one is "Hanging out all by myself, at least I'm in good company". I just kinda like those lines, haha. Anyway, the angry vibe of the songs is pretty cool, but the song itself is not too great. I often find myself skipping it when listening to the album, plus it also has a boring chorus.

Troublemaker

3/10

So boring! Neither the chorus nor the verses are any good. Maybe it's intentionally, but singing about wanting to be a troublemaker and sounding so sweet and bored... no. I've never liked the song and I don't think I ever will. I listened to it two or three times and started to always skip it from then on.

Angel Blue

9/10

Really cool song! I actually love it and I also love the line "Won't you be my bloody valentine?" No idea why, haha.

But once again, although I really love the song, I don't like how similar it sounds to everything else on the album. It might deserve 9 points though, but I'm not quite sure yet.

Sweet 16

4/10

I really don't get why everyone loves this song so much. I don't like it at all... way too sweet and innocent, it almost sounds like a sticky pink candy or something. At least that's the image that always comes to my mind when I listen to Sweet 16. Plus, maybe it's only because of the correspondent show on MTV, but the phrase "sweet 16" makes me cringe.

Rusty James

6/10

This song is quite nice, but also quite boring. I don't listen to it very often, because it's nice but not outstanding in any way... just another rather boring song. One of the best lines on the album might be "And your heart can't even break when it doesn't even pound" Still not as good as other Green Day lyrics, but close.

Oh Love

6/10

I remember how I tried to get excited about it when it was released, because it was the first new single and all... but it didn't work. I also only listened to it for a few times and then went on to listen to other stuff again. It is a nice song, but nothing special. I've heard it being played in shops quite a lot and that's the kind of song it is, it's good to be played in the background somewhere where nobody really pays attention to the music.

So, all together the album would be a 6,5/10. Quite low for a Green Day album, plus I think it's interesting how I couldn't give 10 points to any of the songs. Maybe it will grow on me a bit the more I listen to it, but maybe it will just remain one of the worst albums Green Day have ever released. It's still kinda good because it's Green Day, but considering that they are my favorite band for some reasons, this album is just disappointing.

I just made a cover of "Carpe Diem." Check it out!

Awesome cover, Matt!

Even though I mostly can't agree with your opinion about the album, I'm glad you posted this review. As someone else has already said, it's always interesting to get to know why an actual fan doesn't like the record. It's constructive criticism and I guess we all appreciate that. And there even are some points with which I can agree. For example what you wrote about Troublemaker. Or in general, that the choruses are super repetitive. The thing is, that it doesn't really bother me. I kind of like that the music is way more simple than on the last records. It can be simple and still awesome. I can totally understand that this fact might annoy someone, though. So thanks for your review :)

Thanks for appreciating my opinion although you don't agree. :) It's not that I don't like the records, it's a more or less decent album... But compared to other Green Day albums, it's probably my least favorite one.

I kind of find Troublemaker boring, and like if something was missing. I think it would have been an amazing song if instead of repeating 4 times 'wanna be a troublemaker' they said it 3 times and them broke in an epic chorus.

I can see your point and you're right, but I guess it didn't bother me too much because it is part of a trilogy. If they just released this album alone I would be disappointed, but I kind of look at it as one mega epic album and this is the first 1/3 of it. Nice review btw, good to see a not so positive one with constructive criticism!

As for my opinion, I think AI and 21CB are far better albums. They're much more diverse with obviously more lyrical depth. But I still loved this. I've only listened twice but these are my ratings so far:

Nuclear Family - 6/10

Stay the Night - 9/10

Carpe Diem - 8/10

Let Yourself Go - 7.5/10

Kill the DJ - 8.5/10

Fell for You - 6.5/10

Loss of Control - 6.5/10

Troublemaker - 4/10

Angel Blue - 5/10

Sweet 16 - 6.5/10

Rusty James - 6.5/10

Oh Love - 8/10

Overall, I'd give it an 8/10 (AI and 21CB were both 10).

Well, I haven't looked at the lyrics, but the chorus sound really boring. I think it's my least fav song in the album. Still better than many songs in 21CB imo though.

Troublemaker is probably my least favorite, but I really love the guitar solo and the lyric "From now till death do we party"... that's pretty clever. Actually, all the lyrics are pretty entertaining (besides the chorus).

Even though it's not my favorite, Loss of Control is a sleeper hit for me, and I have a feeling it's going to grow on me. It gives me that VERY late 90's pop-punk vibe. I haven't really listened to much Blink, so this is probably completely off-base, but that's kind of what it reminds me of. I have to get more familiar with it, it's so punchy! I can picture it being a radio hit in a different era.

Alright, here it is. I'll give my general impression of the album first and then go through it song by song.

I found myself agreeing with most of what you said. As a Green Day fan, I might be biased and feel like I have to love it because it's by my favorite band (not that I feel forced to like everything GD does but since they're my favorite band, I'll listen to this album more times and give it a chance which I wouldn't do if it was by another band) but if I wasn't a Green Day fan and was listening to this record for the first time, I don't think I would bother buying it or listening to it again (apart from maybe a few songs).

I never got either why everyone loves Sweet 16 so much either. I tend to skip it. It just sounds so candy pop-like *cringes* I do find the lyrics quite nice though but more because it's another 80 song and I always thought Billie writing about Adrienne was kinda sweet.

Green Day hasn't re-invented themselves with this record but I doubt they ever wanted to. I still like this album very much even if it's not gonna become my favorite. As posted above by michael1989, I would be slightly disappointed too if this was the only GD album for now and if we had to wait another 2-3 years for a new one but with two more albums coming up, I hope there's gonna be something for everyone in there.

I still love this album, don't get me wrong, but some songs to me have too much of a "b-side" sound.

Concerning the lyrics, I like that Billie is going back to a more personal style and away from the style of AI and 21st CB. What I like most is the reference to "86". I do find the amount of "fucks" a bit annoying though (although I like the angry tone of some songs, not gonna lie). But too many fucks in a song just make it sounds like he's trying too hard...

They're boring to me. The chorus for both sounds good to me, thought he Troublemaker one is very repetitive, but the verses in both a really boring to me.
