¡UNO! Album

Billie is on record in various interviews saying both that the album trilogy is a concept set that (unlike American Idiot and 21stCB) isn't character-driven; while also saying that each album can simultaneously stand on its own in a "before/during/after party" analogy. I think things will become clearer when iDos! drops -- the snippets of Fuck Time, Lady Cobra, and Nightlife that we've heard in the previews indicate that songs on iUno! (specifically, Kill The DJ and Troublemaker) are musically and lyrically connected bookends for each other -- I mean, it's gotta be more than a big fucking accident that Kill The DJ and Nightlife are both using four-on-the-floor rhythms and that Troublemaker's percussion, bass, and subject matter are echoed in Fuck Time. This would put Nuclear Family prologuing and foreshadowing the whole thing, and Oh Love on iUno! and Amy on iDos! as cliffhangers. If this does pan out -- which I think it will, given how Billie Joe has been writing songs in a thematic fashion ever since Green Day's early days -- it'll be another epic step for the band: writing a three-volume rock opera using music and lyrical themes only, without any named characters recurring in the songs, to drive the concept.

You are so awesome dude. haha :) never thought about it that way.

I agree. I had the same opinion on a few songs that she had, but to me, a lot of what she said was just her overthinking what each song was about.

Exactly my thought.

I was snooping around on youtube and found this guy in a electronics store talking about new releases this week in music like Uno, and No Doubt's "Push and Shove". I saw him holding not only Uno, but also what appears to be Dos and Tre all in the boxset. I don't know why this intrigues me but it does, so I screen capped it here:

Yeah I got that box set today, the Dos and Tre are just a bit of paper stuck in to make it look full, and to keep the real iUno! in place until you buy the next albums. They also remind you of when the others are out, quite good marketing idea by Warner!

^ So, this is me with the T-Shirt I got with my copy. Is it everywhere available or only in certain countries? Just wondering.

I assumed it wasn't available in Ireland because the girl serving me mentioned nothing about it, but later on in town I saw a guy wearing that very tshirt. I complimented him on it but he didn't hear me.

I've been thinking....

To me it sounds like Uno could easily have been released after Nimrod.

Warning was their experimental album, American Idiot was their epic masterpiece and 21st Century Breakdown was really just a sequel to American Idiot.

Uno goes back to the basic Green Day formula and kicks off where they left Nimrod, while still progressing and again reinventing themselves.

Since the only reviews that have been posted thus far in this thread are the extremely positive one's (some a little over the top), I think it's fair to show a little of the otherside of the spectrum.

There will be more for sure, and I think that they should be posted here. Just because they're "mixed to negative reviews" doesn't mean they're poorly written. Keep it a little fair and equal up in here, so that every review doesn't make iUno! sound like the greatest thing of all time.

The only thing I would add to this post is that 21st CB was a "BAD sequel to American Idiot".

Other than that, those are my thoughts.

I was going to say that but thought I'd leave my bitterness for 21CBD out of it ;)

I wouldn't count that

I think it should be a reviewing rule that each review should be somewhat more than 1 and a half paragraphs. I'm all for someone not liking an album and stuff, but that was a terrible review, if you can even call it that.

i want to kick there asses!!!! tumblr_m6h5zgMejQ1r6ylnq.gif

Why? Because they don't share the same opinion as you? Big whup.

I thought critic reviews didn't mean anything? :P

I'd personally give the album a 7/10, nothing to write home about personally.

I could see myself getting burnt out on it fairly quickly, and I always said iUno! would probably be the worst received of the 3 because it's not really a new direction for Green Day, and it doesn't have much variety or dynamics to it.

I agree with the thing about posting negative reviews too, but have you read that one with 1/5? I wouldn't consider that a review :P that's like writing "hey I don't like the album, so you shouldn't like it" haha

Would you say that if they had given the album a 5/5?

Jesus why does everyone hate 21CB? It's a GREAT album!

Because it's bad and Green Day should feel bad for releasing it.

There's only been a handful of reviews. Here's iUno!'s current Metascore:

http://www.metacritic.com/music/uno!/green-day

There will be around 20-25 reviews there when it's all said and done, and I think this might wind up being one of their lowest ranked albums.

I'll make sure to post the Pitchfork review, which I'm 90% sure will be negative.

LA Times review could turn out negative as well, since they don't seem too keen on any of the tracks released thus far.

I think a person who gave the album 5/5 would give many reasons why they liked it instead of just mentioning one song

You should read Peter Traver's reviews from Rolling Stone, his are only around 2-3 short paragraphs and he's one of the most well known critics in the world

Well to be honest, I don't care about critics. And I also don't care if a review of a band/artist I like is negative. Nobody all likes the same stuff so there's negative reviews for everything.

Everyone doesn't hate it, but everyone has an opinion, and many people here has tried listing the albums from favorite to least favorite. My guess is that many people wasn't satisfied with that particular album simply because AI is too epic to top. It's a stand alone album, not a sequel, so I've loved it since it came out.

mostly because it's the "comeback of the band." I became a fan in 2004/5 when AI was on the roll, so it was the first album in my time of fandom that I was really waiting for, since all the previous ones were out in the record stores already. /offtopic

No, no, no not every review is equally valid and not every reviewer has an equally valid opinion. Take the first one for example. I would bet money that person didn't even bother to listen to the album, it's such a terribly lazy piece of writing.

"This, the first salvo of a 3CD campaign that will see two further

albums released by mid-January, finds Green Day's devotion to the most

basic of rock formats resulting almost inevitably in some of the dullest

music released all year.

The brisk punk riffing chugs along efficiently, but it's a case of sheep in wolf's clothing: just patronising corporate rock masquerading, in sweary adolescent anthems as somehow anti-establishment. One wonders, listening to their baffling antipathy in "Kill the DJ", just what a playlist staple such as Green Day has to complain about as regards airplay."

That's it guys. That's all this reviewer has to say about an entire album. The square root of fuck all.

God I hope you're kidding.

It was in desperate need of some trimming and cuts. The album also seemed to use the "slow quiet start into power chord" far too much. It was fine with iViva La Gloria! but Before The Lobotomy and Little Girl could have been so much more powerful and stood out more if they stuck with the sound of their intros. Know Your Enemy, Static Age, Christian's Inferno, See The Light, and Restless Heart Syndrome could have all been cut from that album, 21 Guns would have been a pretty good album closer.

Revised Tracklisting:

1) Song of The Century

2) 21st Century Breakdown

3) iViva La Gloria!

4) Before The Lobotomy (revised version)

5) Last Night On Earth

6) East Jesus Nowhere

7) Peacemaker

8) Last Of The American Girls

9) Murder City

10) Little Girl (revised version)

11) Horseshoes and Handgrenades

12) American Eulogy

13) 21 Guns

Murder City should have been the lead single.

I just posted those as examples since there haven't been that many reviews released yet.

There was one from Q Magazine that I was going to post, but it doesn't seem to have been release yet, but the score is on Metacritic.

They gave it a 6/10.
