I find it interesting that so many people don't seem to enjoy Oh Love very much. I can understand why, but for some reason that song just got under my skin in a profound way. I was in tears the first time I heard it, and I'm sure it'll choke me up when I see it live in less than 2 weeks.

I agree with you....I got goosebumps when I heard it the first time. I really really love that song!

But I guess I can see why people wouldn't enjoy it very much.

Sweet 16 is such a big surprise! I wasn't very impressed with the shitty recording we had.

off topic for a second......man, some of the folks here give 'idiot club' a literal meaning.

either educate yourself on a matter, or at least brush up on it. otherwise, go back to the things you know, and shut the fuck up about the things you DONT know about. dont preach like youre a goddamn authority when you admit that you know next to nothing about a topic. some of these posts almost hurt to read, theyre so ignorant.

not naming names, not pointing fingers, just venting as a result of too much stupidity ingested by my eyes.

that being said, i think the record is kinda weak overall. i love it just the same, but its not quite as magnificent as id hoped. but im reserving total judgement until i can go through all 37 songs continuously to hear it as one collection, not broken into 3 chapters. but there definitely some gems on the record.

Even though Sweet 16 is my least favorite song on the album, I don't think it's a bad song at all, it just doesn't really grab me. It kind of pats me on the head and keeps walking. There's not a single song on this album to skip, I love it when that happens. Kill the DJ even makes me dance now when at first I wasn't impressed.

This has probably been said by someone else on the thread, but I haven't read the entire thread, so apologies in advance just in case.

I fucking get this album. It took me a few listens, but I get it. This is just about aging in general. Growing more mature, growing more distant from people, growing closer to others. Lost loves, clinging onto old memories (and finally giving them peace in your mind), and not wanting to miss anything else because things keep going....regardless of whether or not you want them to. These guys still want to live life screaming, never wanting to stop ("like a merry-go-round"), and they know that they've gotten far because they're the last motherfuckers standing in their court. This album is comfortable for them since they're already up in stardom. They're in history with their music. They're still pushing their own boundaries, but they've become content with who they are and what they do, and this album illustrates that beautifully.

I rate this album 42.

I still hate the stupid countdown in Nuclear Family though.

I agree... I like the final quick "5 4 3 2 1" but the preceding part I'm just impatiently waiting for it to end

It's still one of my favorite songs on the album though.

See now that Green Day has released it on their official SoundCloud, my rule of only listening to official releases is being tested.

I shall resist, though.

Beautiful! I think we can extend this further in anticipation of the "party from hell" that iDos! is setting up to be. Speaking from the perspective of another Billie Joe Armstrong-aged geezer, growing old is indeed a huge theme here -- I think it permeates all 12 songs on the album, even the curmudgeonly Kill the DJ (which, as I've mentioned before, I anticipate is going to get turned on its head in Nightlife next album). It revisits two questions from Nimrod from a new perspective: What happens when you get too old to be punk anymore (The Grouch); and what happens when "I Love You" just isn't enough (Redundant)? At the end of iUno!, Oh Love ratchets that tension up to the breaking point. Our nameless narrator is in the throes of a midlife crisis -- introspective, alone, deserted by friends and feeling abandoned by even the loved ones he's currently in timeworn relationships with, reminiscing about friends and lovers long gone, and feeling like there's still gotta be something better out there -- the urge to break free from it all, consequences be damned, and go exploring some deep, dark thrills just because he can (blowing up his Nuclear Family in a "bad comedy" of errors is fine and dandy just so long as there's a slice of the action in it for him!) His heart's on the loose, alright, and it's ready to unload -- right into iDos!.

This is exactly what it did to me! The song really got me from the very first time I heard it and it was even more overwhelming when I heard it live. It's a song you have to listen to LOUD. The intro guitars just sound so epic and Billie's voice gives me goosebumps. I wish more people would see the beauty of this song.
