AlissaGoesRAWR
Well, that particular bit is based on one of the most commonly used chord progressions in the genre. The Offspring - Kids Aren't Alright/You're Gonna Go Far Kid. Gaslight Anthem - pretty much every song. Sum 41 - The Hell Song. So it sounds like a lot of songs but doesn't sound like it's specifically ripped from any of them. Unlike Amy which is just plagiarism of All I've Got To Do. Exactly, and I think "Dammit" by blink-182 has the same chord progressions too. That's funny, I'm a big fan of blink-182 and Sum 41, but I never associated "Stay the Night" with those songs, and I'm still having trouble hearing it now... I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to the technicalities of music though. Haven't listened to Amy yet (trying to spoil as little of the trilogy as possible), but I'll have to compare the two after I do!

The thing is when you played too many "punk" songs with a guitar or a bass, you realise this is a really common chord progression. I'm not talking about the melody of the lyrics though
DannyDirnt
Ok, I don't know if this has ever been brought up and this is kind of a longshot but I was listening to Loss of Control and there is that line "hey isn't that old whatshisface that I see walking down the street?" I was thinking that if this song could be kinda related to the American Idiot - storyline. You know, Whatsername had that one line "Did she ever marry old whatshisface?" I know it's just a figure of speech but still Then there's that line "I wanna find me a better scene..." and other lines that remind me of Jesus of Suburbia. Could it be? I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. It's 7:40am, I'm so tired and I don't know what I'm typing Nice idea. I recall noticing the 'whatsisface' too, but you made an interesting point there
WrongWayToSalvation
I completely understand. It's not my favorite, but it's up there, and the end is awesome. That's kind of another reason I'm not a huge Oh Love fan, even in the context of the album. It kind of throws everything out of whack. Especially since Rusty James is so epic and leaves you feeling good, almost like the album should have ended there. I wonder if Oh Love just would have fit better on a different album. I think Oh Love would have been a lot stronger if they cut out some of the verses Just have them be: Oh love, oh love Won't you rain on me tonight? Oh life, oh life Please dont pass me by Oh ride, free ride Won't you take me close to you Oh lights and action I just can't be satisfied Oh hours and hours Like the dog years of the day Old story, same old story Won't you see the light of day And to make the song even more epic, they should have played the song's solo again to synch with the repeat of the chorus. I think the song would have been more warmly recieved if they had done this, because it would have dragged less. That's shaves more than 30 seconds off. tdlyon
After spending almost a month with this album, I think I'm finally ready to "review" it. Here goes nothing: Nuclear Family- 4/5. One of my favorites on the album. I can't seem to listen to another song without also getting the urge to listen to this one. Stay the Night- 5/5. Probably tied for the best. Sure to go down in Green Day's history as one of their best songs ever. Carpe Diem-3/5. Extremely catchy chorus, but the verses are a bit meh. Let Yourself Go-4/5. Definitely gonna be a live favorite. Instantly memorable song, with one of the most catchy choruses they've ever made. I love the part where BJ screams, too. Kill the DJ- 4/5. Very different, but really cool. Great guitar, and a very catchy chorus. I especially love the "We are the vultures" part. Fell for You- 3/5. Not really one of my favorites. Just kinda...there. Loss of Control- 4/5. Very old-GD sounding, but the lyrics in the chorus are kinda weak. Troublemaker- 2/5. My least favorite. The verses are kinda annoying, and the chorus is really weak. Cool guitar solo though. Angel Blue- 4/5. Could be on Kerplunk. Very fast paced and awesome, and the chorus is insanely catchy. Sweet 16- 4/5. Another great one. I really love the chorus, and BJ's vocals are awesome. Rusty James- 5/5. Tied for best. Awesome lyrics, incredibly catchy, awesome message. Just awesome. Oh Love- 4/5. I don't hate this song like everyone else does. Really catchy chorus, and a cool solo. Also, it's even better as an album closer. I used the word catchy a LOT in this, so I guess that's the best way to describe this album. Catchy. Can't wait for Dos.

Yeah, I definitely think the slower-paced dragging is what makes me dislike this track compared to the others. I never really thought about how I would have felt about the track had it been shorter. Honestly, I think you're right. I probably would have liked it this way.
Guest Trotsky
Still wondering why "Stay The Night","Rusty James" and "Nuclear Family" were not singles...Maybe they didn't want to throw great importance in this album.
PaulS
Still wondering why "Stay The Night","Rusty James" and "Nuclear Family" were not singles...Maybe they didn't want to throw great importance in this album. Because they're not trying to sell the album to people who already like Green Day. They pick the least traditional songs because they believe - correctly - that they offer the greatest crossover appeal. It's why they picked 21 Guns and not East Jesus Nowhere. It's why WMUWSE and BOBD were the biggest selling singles from American Idiot. The songs Green Day fans like are rarely the songs that chart well, sadly. My personal favorite song from Uno is Fell For You, but I know that it's impossible to be released as single(I don't think many liked this song). I consider odd that they chose Oh Love as a single. It's nice song but doesn't have the dynamic of a lead single.Know Your Enemy at least had a dynamic though there were better songs on 21stCB. No Rhyme Or Reason
me too, that and ktdj are my favourites. I'll never complain that a GD song goes on too long! Oh Love and Kill The DJ are my two favorites too! Third and fourth place go to Troublemaker and Sweet 16, I think. I agree though - GD songs are never too long! The longer ones are often my favorites - Jesus Of Suburbia, Homecoming, 21 Guns, Oh Love, etc.
