¡UNO! Album

The "Easy cum and go" line in Troublemaker really pushed me over the edge. I'm convinced with the amount of autobiographical material Billie Joe inserts into his lyrics that this album is a perfect example of a midlife crisis. Just for the record, I'm not reacting to his seeking treatment either, I mentioned this a week ago after first hearing all the songs and now I'm convinced. These just aren't the sorts of lines we're used to hearing from him. The edgy songs of the earlier era dealt more with overall theme "Burnout- Not working, lazing about." "Longview- Lazing around, masturbating." "Brat- Inheritance." And the edgy songs of the more recent era dealt with politics, but Billie Joe's songs about women were always more respectful in tone and usually, even when they were angry, like in "Chump" he ended up taking the blame, "I'm a chump." On "Troublemaker" "Oh Love" "Stay the Night" and maybe "Let Yourself Go" I feel this idea is lost. "Fell for You" and "Angel Blue" come much closer to the older songs about girls in my opinion. However, I still find it strange that "Fell for You" is coming out on an album eighteen years after a successful marriage. "Angel Blue" I think can be interpreted more as a sympathetic teenage song rather than true love, but the point is, most of these examples seem to point to an increase in shock value. They feel like caricatures of old songs, like someone trying to wiggle back into a mold of their younger self. Just my opinion, but I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks.

I don't agree with everything you say but I do agree with the "Fell For You" thing. At least you didn't said "this albums sucks, mid-life crisis bla bla" :P

please just listen to rusty james at 1:40 and tell me what it says instead of "where the fuck is your old gang"

Remember those weird sounds in the censored versions of the Dookie singles? Something like that XD.

Listening through the album for the first time right now. It sounds like they're running out of ideas, because I can hear a bunch of their old songs in this album, ad Billie has, surprisingly, overused the word "fuck". Overall though, very catchy songs and I like the feel of the album. I'll be listening to this nonstop for days

I agree about the "re-use of melodies" being ultimately harmless because the execution is so fucking epic. Funny you don't like Troublemaker though (I mean, it seems people either love it or hate it - which, whatever, it's personal taste). I like it a lot. Never would have thought Broadway but also wouldn't think of that as a bad thing .

We get to see inside Billie's head quite a bit with these songs. Which is both awesome and a little frightening .

I actually like what they are going for with the song but it just doesn't really go anywhere. Whats cool is that everyone can think differently about each song and find different favorites :). The more I listen the more I love this album. They took a pretty big gamble with the sound I think and its just so awesome to get this raw jam-sound. Definitely does sound like "4 guys just playing in a room. Also Billies voice is fucking incredible!

yeah I know how you feel :/ Some people got theirs before today too. Like on Friday. I was already seeing pics before the weekend.

they totally bombed that pre-order idea. Hopefully they learned from this and won't fuck up for Dos and Tre

Mine got here right on street day (today). By the way, I saw you posted earlier about it not coming until Thursday, but keep checking. I live in Georgia and mine was in Tennessee Saturday and managed to get here from Atlanta in a day and a half. But my tracking info kept saying Thursday as well. I think that was my original point...

Maybe...

Ok maybe that will happen to me. I have a feeling I might get it tomorrow. Hope so!

This album doesn't scream mid-life crisis to me. Yeah it deals with them getting older, but they're not bitter about it. They're accepting the fact that they're getting older so they're gonna try and have as much fun as possible.

That's kind of what mid-life crisis means, though. Stereotypically, middle-aged men buying sports cars and having illicit affairs. Here it happens in the form of dirty lyrics. But it isn't solely that, because it also follows along with a departure from the previous albums.

I believe Dos will be the standout and Tre will be meh!... Dos will have them at the party, which will probably have more high energy type songs which is what I want to hear. Tre will probably deal with the aftermath/hangover and I think it will be the low point for the trilogy.

Yea and mine was Mail Innovations as well. Hell I wasn't expecting it until tomorrow but decided to check the tracking again and lo and behold "out for delivery." This was about 3PM and I knew the mail had already come and there it was in the mailbox. Of course I live in a town much smaller than NOLA so yours is probably at the nearest PO nestled all nice and warm between that dust ruffle for that creepy cat lady down the street, and that briefcase that was a last minute office gift for that coke head manager in Accounting who passed you over for a promotion so you plan to lace it with poison.

Wow, I have no idea where that came from. Point is it's probably closer than you think.

Yeah but usually when describing mid-life crisis' it usually defines a person who's not accepting it well. While in the lyrics, they're embracing it by having fun

Uno! is growing so much in me. :)

Also, when you listen to it a lot (I mean like A LOT) it seems weird that this is the same band that did songs like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Jesus of Suburbia". I mean it in a cool way. Man, I love this band.

Haha, sorry? *patpat*

Haha I am not saying it is like, "guys I'm old, what do i do?!". Just another... thing. It's sort of a natural progression from the previous albums (even though there is no proper precedent for it). It just also fits in with other ideas that might also be coming up.

Are the lyrics in Kill the DJ really "holiest of holes"? I thought it was "holiest of old" and was trying to convince myself that that was it because holiest of holes sounds so fucking stupid, but I was reading the lyric booklet today and it indeed says holiest of holes. :S Needless to say, that song is not growing on me anytime soon.

I don't know how you're interpreting "holes," but you can look at it as like...people call places like clubs "holes" particularly in phrases like "hole in the wall" (or "rathole" haha). It kind of goes in line with the whole message of the song anyway :P

If it weren't for everything going on with Billie, I wonder if anyone would be saying that this CD hints at a mid-life crisis? I mean, many of the songs on Uno were being played at secret shows LAST September, and I don't recall anyone mentioning anything strange about the lyrics then.

I don't know. On one side I see it - especially in the music videos, actually. They were never the "let's have naked girls dancing around in our videos" kind of band. Quite the opposite, actually. I was so puzzled when the video for "Oh, Love" came out. And it's very weird to see the sexual side of them being played up in such a way. On the flip side - I don't know, maybe after making two albums with heavy material, they just wanted to chill out and goof around. I think a lot of the songs on Uno are more about nostalgia then about trying to fit in with a younger crowd as a middle-aged person. And everyone gets nostalgic about what they viewed as the good old days, whether you're 20 or 40 or 80. It's totally normal.

Early favorites for me for this album are Nuclear Family, Stay the Night, Fell for You, Sweet Sixteen, and Rusty James. Completely in love.
