I've been a champion of Stay the Night as a single release ever since I heard it leak out of the early secret shows, but I'm actually surprised to see myself conceding that the finished studio version of Nuclear Family may have a leg up over even that great song for a few reasons -- (1) although we can't compare it to the studio version of Stay the Night yet, Nuclear Family seems punchier and poppier than the live versions suggest that Stay the Night will be; and (2) Nuclear Family is more radio-friendly and radio-ready -- clean and meaningful subject matter (hey, man, Angel's Piss is a type of drink!), catchy as hell melodies and guitar riffs, and no F-bombs to have to mute out.

I hope Let Yourself Go was just an unplanned release to ride an excitement bump that the VMAs generated and sell a few thousand copies of the song in the process, and I doubt it'll make the radio due to how incredibly butchered it'll turn out due to (literally) censoring the fuck out of it. And I'm hoping that they'll put Nuclear Family out for radio play. Like Holiday, it's a good, solid song that demands to be noticed when you hear it, it'll make casual fans go "wow, THAT's Green Day??", and it'd do damn well on the charts.

As for the electronic downloads and general spastic nature of the release cycle, I agree -- Warner's done a hash-job of it and they need to get their shit together NOW, before Uno's release date. Right now they're confusing some people at best and pissing off others at worst. Not the band's fault, but someone needs to start cracking a whip over there in Burbank.

Final thought for the night: the extended countdown that closes the song, revisited. In the end, Green Day writes for the live performance, not for the studio. That countdown is going to fucking blow the roof off the joint when they rock it live. Tens of thousands of people screaming the count back at BJ, capped off with a flash pot explosion at "ONE!"...I just let that image cross my mind and -- WHEW -- I have to go take a shower. And clean my pants. :woot:

I agree with you, but Let Yourself Go is already getting some airplay, I don't know, this era is so confusing!

Favorite song off Uno so far (I've only heard singles)

BUT, Green Day, I hear a little of Good Charlotte's "Movin' On" in your prechorus ;)

This song also reminds me of Generation X's "One Hundred Punks", which Green Day actually plays on the PA before some of their shows!

but, they still make it their own. and it's great. I love love love it. :)

And does it sound good? Or too censored?

Ask Americans, mate ;)

However Oh Love here is a hit, but it ain't in Spain, is it?

I don't really know. I don't listen to radio and I had never heard any Green Day song apart from people having AI on the phone and Poprocks and Coke in my book. So I have no idea at all. Wikipedia has no data either.

I actually watched the video only one time (complete I mean). It's kind of boring to me, but the song is awesome, I think listened to it like 10 or 15 times by now.

I'm saying this because a lot of people are saying that they prefer videos like this.

why is Jason included in music videos when he's not a member of the band? They should just include him officially or something... and if they don't want to include him as a member then he shouldn't appear in videos and just stick to playing Live.

Why does it matter? I don't get everyone's objection to this and why they care so much.

Nice song. I like it, but I think it will have to grow on me, I don't see this that good yet.

So what single didn't US get?

kill the DJ was a UK only single

Loved it, I always like seeing inside the recording studio and the process, and the song is as awesome as I hoped it to be. Mike's bass solo, oh yeah.

And just for the record, I love seeing more of Jason, he's been with them long enough.

Who said those were the rules? It doesn't have to be black and white, either in or out and that's it. Jason and the band clearly prefer a shade of grey instead :P. The set up they've got works for them and they're happy with it so who cares?

Jason is there because he deserves to be.

On a somewhat-related note, I'm definitely ordering angel's piss the next time I head to the bar... Thank you, GD, for encouraging my bad habits.

i'm glad, they uploaded it on youtube in a much better quality.

Audio and video are still out of sync by maybe two or three frames. Gonna have to fix it on my end.

So has anyone tried to breakdown the "meaning" of this song? *coughcough*Michael*coughcough* (Did I miss any good analysis?)

Billie did say in an interview that he "doesn't know what the fuck Nuclear Family is about," and I kind of get the same vague social commentary vibe out of it that I got from Kill the DJ, even though Billie was more assertive in saying that Kill the DJ has real meaning behind it, they're both kind of the same in their lyrically unclear message. If anything I think Nuclear Family is a bit easier to tackle simply because it's less metaphorical.

The chorus seems pretty straightforward: death of the nuclear family (the end of social norms, social structures, everything we 'hold dear' in traditional society), sent to hell by capitalism or communism (Chinese company conspiracy) or whatever corrupt governments/economic systems, and the singer is OK with all of that as long as he can make fun of it and observe it and in some way, join in the destruction ("as long as it comes in hi-fidelity for me too").

Overall, I think the song has a very REM "It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine" message. But for GD it's "Like a nuclear bomb and it won't be long till I detonate." And they're having fun, so bring on the apocalypse.
