Uno! to have "clean" version

I'm sure the clean version of the album is for the mum who wrote Billie Joe a letter, that lead to "Reject." Everyone else will buy the explicit ones ;)

That's actually a very good theory.

So does that mean Dos and Tre will have clean versions? Making a clean version of Fuck Time wouldn't do anything. It's still really inappropriate without the fucks

No word on clean versions of those albums.

I'd laugh if he was quoted saying that in an interview at some point!

Nah; seems like a label decision to me.

So weird to think that one album will have different forms than the others, that the rest of the world doesn't take them as a single unit...

Well the label let them release 3 albums in such a short time, Green Day have to step back on some decisions and let the label do what it wants...

The three albums is set under one release contract so that is out of question.

Making clean/edited versions of the albums is a fantastic idea. Here's why I think that:

1) More people are apt to purchase the album. A) Because it's at WalMart, one of the largest music retailers, and B) Because there isn't that big EXPLICIT tag on iTunes or the Parental Advisory label on the CD jacket.

2) Radio play - Already seen it with "Kill the DJ" but there would be official clean/edited versions out there. The radio station wouldn't have to require a radio-exclusive edit from Warner. They could play any song off the albums when they want without the need to edit themselves or worry about FCC regulations.

3) More TV, movie, and social exposure due to a lot of those mediums requiring/wanting non-explicit versions of music so it appeals to a family audience. Appealing to family audience = bigger profits and popularity.

4) Last, but certainly not least, I can play it at work loudly and not get in trouble for cursing/swearing :D

From what I've heard so far, Kill the DJ seems to be the only explicit song on UNO so I doubt not including swears is gonna really ruin the integrity of the album

it is a bolddecision and it must be shown to be lucrative for the label to allow further bold decisions by the band.

Matt, you are right. Although I don't see myself buying it, playing at work would be one upside!

There is no way I would buy a clean version of the album. I just don't think it's the way the band intended the albums to be. That said there are obvious advantages from an advertising and AirPlay on radio/TV point of view.

7 of the 12 songs on UNO will be explicit. Let yourself go is especially explicit.

They put out a clean version of American Idiot back in the day so it's not like they've never done it before. And looks like they're reissuing it to coincide with this

I don't understand why people are saying that a clean version is pointless/stupid.

You would be surprised how a simple word like "fuck" effects sales.

I can make an argument against every one of those reasons.

1) The biggest of which is it goes against Green Day's long-standing (and successful I might add) stance against censoring themselves and their music. And that is unacceptable.

2) It's adult content they're confusing the audience with by marketing to the "family," primarily kids who shouldn't be listening to it in the first place. Their clean, safe approach to the marketing is inconsistent with the risks they took with the music itself and it's backfiring on them. And again, they've never had to censor their music before to get it played on different mediums like TV, movies, etc...

3) Fuck the radio. I mean, really, FUCK. THE. RADIO. The radio managed to get along just fine up to now with Green Day's music without Green Day having to censor it.

4) Fuck Walmart. I mean, really, FUCK. WALMART. Green Day has always managed to sell their music to exceptional levels without having to sacrifice their principles to the Walmart Gods. And who cares about the Parental Advisory warning? The fastest way to get kids to do something is to tell them they can't.

5) The clean, safe approach isn't going to affect sales. Have you been to the Walmart entertainment department? It sucks. And Awesome As Fuck was already there. Nobody was buying it, because Walmart sucks and the department was empty. Green Day isn't going to change that. In fact, you won't find anyone rushing Walmart to buy Green Day's music.

6) I give you the one on being able to listen to the music at work. That's a nice bonus, but really, do we all have to suffer for it?

I understand that they release a clean version, (some) people will buy it.

But I do think that it's silly that it should be needed, the songs become very different from what they really are supposed to be. And I don't see the problem with swearing in songs, it's just words. But obviously a lot of people do think that it is a big problem.

It'll mean more little kids can hear Green Day songs which is cool. My 5 year old nephew enjoys some Green Day songs and if there's a few more that we can play him then it's a good thing. I (and anyone else who wants it) can still have the explicit version, so it's fine by me. I'd much rather they make two versions so that the explicit version can be as explicit as they want, than only make one and hold back at all.

There was never a clean version of American Idiot, except on the Rock Band game.

Yes, there was. I saw it myself in the shops - it was in the charts, about fifty places behind the unclean version. lol SO many people tell me this but I know what I saw!

Wow that's a bit over the top and over dramatic. How exactly are you going to suffer because there is a clean version of their record?

And on the other issues they are not really censoring themselves they are offering an alternative version of their album. It's not like they are only recording non explicit albums now (which would be censoring themselves) The fully explicit version of the album is still going to be there, buy it an be happy or don't.

Walmarts in other countries sell albums with Parental Advisory labels. And it looks like there is a rerelease of American Idiot coming out that is clean, but I can only find info for it on AllMusic.com, BestBuy.com, and Amazon.com. Also, all of Green Day's other albums are getting rereleased this year in Japan (according to Amazon). I'm curious as to why they're putting out a clean version of American Idiot though.

I stay in Houston and sometimes L.A.
