Green Day Tweets

If their next album sounds anything remotely like pop punk now, he's going to get absolutely slammed for saying this. Even more so considering Green Day were one of the first to be associated with the phrase

I don't think anyone takes him seriously.

Yeah, I thought that. It seems to have reached quite a lot of people who are taking it seriously with stuff like this and this. I can definitely see people trying to bring it back up.

Well, taking "I'm not Justin Bieber, you motherfuckers" into consideration, that is the dumbest thing Billie has ever said so far. Makes him sound like generic self-indulgent washed up aging punk rocker. Well, I guess he's off exploring new depths again.

Jesus. Maybe throw in a few more insults to feel better about yourself.

That tweet about destroying the term pop-punk could equally mean Green Day are going to ditch the punk title and release a pure pop album

Hmm I dunno if it's a comment about their next musical direction or just a dislike of the term "pop punk", I guess since it's sometimes used in a disparaging way (although that's silly really since pop can just mean melodic and catchy which is exactly what Green Day's music is).

Given that it could easily just be a throwaway comment about disliking the term or perhaps what the term has come to represent (shitty boybands with guitars) it's going to be extremely tiresome if fans start bitching when they don't get the hardcore punk album they were "promised".

If I've learned anything from GDC it's that 'fans' will bitch about anything and everything no matter what.

I assumed he was just complaining about the term itself (and that he may have already forgotten he even posted it :P ) rather than  making a big statement, but either way I do think people will use it as a reason to complain if they don't like new music. Because yeah, it's stupid but they will, even if it's their own fault for taking a tweet too seriously.

He's been pissing his band's credibility away over the last 7 years (when was Know Your Enemy released?), he might as well take down the genre they popularised too.

I can't believe how many "news" stories were written about a single tweet, honestly. It's amazing how thirsty the music journalists are for news from this band lately. I guess we aren't the only ones! :P

I don't know if we can even begin to understand what he meant by it — it's exciting to speculate, but with him, we should know better than to read too much into it. I think he was just trying to be more funny than anything, rather than make a bold statement, but I could be wrong. If it means a different direction than the trilogy-style music, I hope I am wrong, too.
