And I think I read somewhere that the guys offered him to be a fourth member but he declined. Don't remember where though.

i read that somewhere too, but i think that was back in 2004 something? i dont know. xD but maybe he doesnt want to be in the spotlight too much, but just go on tour and play music with Green Day :)

He's in most of their music videos, he's in most of their live shows, he's in the trilogy, but he's not a member of the band.

most of their music videos? nah

Green Day wouldn't be the same live without Jason. I've said this before but I'll say it again, the guy has the best job in the world. He gets to play and create music with his friends, who just happen to be in one of the biggest bands in the world and he doesn't have to do any of the promo interviews or photo shoots. I definitely see him as being a member of Green Day even if it isn't official.

Not sure, but I think it was before AI.

I wouldn't consider him an "official" member of the band. He contributed to the song so they have to give him credit, it's how the industry works. Given that he's also their touring guitarist I understand where you're coming from but the press would have released some sort of statement if it was official.

I think we shouldn't be the that categorical: undoubtedly Jason has contributed too much for Green Day as a band. At the same time he doesn't like that much to be at press according to you. I must admit I don't know him that well to make a strong statement. But it's the beginning, I think, because of course involves too many label and press stuff. May be they're trying to introduce him to general public now, to us he is the 4th member.

Oh cool. Nice single.

I think Jason White deserves to be in the band and i'm sure they would let him join officially if he wanted to.

We all have to keep in mind, that !Uno! (what's ASCII for the inverted "!"?) is the first Green Day-album Jason White actuallly plays on (YAY). He's just been a touring back-up since Warning.

But like many of you, i consider him to be the 4th member since 2004 when AI came out. After all he's been in the videos (at least some of them) and he is in the "When I Come Around"-video in from 1994 (just throwing around with some GD-trivia - sorry).

Jason and also Rob Cavallo are both as essential for Green Day as Billie, Mike and Tré. Was there a particular reason why Rob didn't produce 21st CB? If so, i can't remember.

Also THIS:

It's about fucking time. :D

this question should officially add to green day for dummies

No, as long as Billie didn't wear "who the fuck is Jason White" T-shirt walking around.

It'd be great, he deserves it, I'd be really pleased to see him as an official member, anyways he rocks! :D

Do you (or anyone) remember where you read/saw that? I find it interesting to hear something like that.

Was he just being ironic? I mean, after all Rob produced everything by them except for their first two albums and 21st CB. And again he's in for Uno, Dos and Tre.

Yeah I have a hard time believing he was sincere when he said that. It seems like they always had a good relationship.

Yeah, it was in one of the new interviews. I guess working with him would get old, especially if he's like "I dont like that one, why dont you try it this way" and then billie gets pissed and mike wants to try it that way, and tre pisses in rob's coffee and rob flips out, so the gang leaves. Then jason white is the only one left at the studio. And so on. So they just needed a break

Here's the REAL controversial question.

Is Jason a better guitar player than Billie?

(I honestly have no idea, but I'd believe it.)

That just made me really mad. But it's a reasonable question.

Id say yes. I think they're both really incredible musicians, but ive heard from others (Jeff Matika, Jason Freese) about just how amazing Jason is.

Didn't Rob Cavallo say that Jason kind of became the unofficial 4th member in a pretty new interview?

And since Jason did play guitar in the album, they have to give him credit for it, so it doesn't have to mean that he's a member.

Yeah, that's how I'm interpreting this. Yeah, it's a little confusing because his name is listed in the same font/size as the other three, but I think this is more of a credit thing than a lineup thing.

I mean, if they want to include Jason as a fourth member and release Cuatro! as another album and retitle the documentary Cinco! ... :creep:

I don't care if he's 'officially' the fourth member cos for me he is always ! The way he's involved with the band and he plays live gigs and stuff is just awesome. I like the way he plays and compliments the sound of the band ! He's just an awesome guitarist :)

Yeah, could be. Sounds like a legit explanation. (Haha, i liked the part where Tré pissed the coffee.)

But i'd rather believe Billie was just making fun, since i really like Rob. I mean, i don't know if it is for Butch Vig that 21st Century Breakdown is my least favourite Green Day-album but i believe that it would have sounded differently if Rob Cavallo had produced it. On the other hand "The Static Age" is on the album (and its one of the greatest songs ever written by anyone). So i think it's ok how it is (as if we could change it...)

BUT back to topic:

I don't care whos the better guitarist - they're both awesome. All i know is that Mike is the best at "baseball bat" ;)

Yeah, plus that's probably been a huge focus for Jason---honing his guitar skills. You get the impression Billie's drive has always been on just becoming a better songwriter (and he has), regardless of finesse and skillz. He's never been known for that or really expressed any desire to become a virtuoso. I vaguely recall he used to be embarrassed or afraid to really perform solos on stage or play acoustic because he was self-conscious about his skills. I remember he said they didn't play Basket Case for a while live because it was too hard to play. He's obviously more comfortable now, but that's probably not where his focus is.

It'll be interesting to find out if Jason's been writing his own guitar parts, and to find out which parts he actually recorded (if we ever find out)... at the Echoplex show, it looks like Billie took the first half of the Oh Love solo, and Jason took the second half  Not that a dozen GDCers haven't already mastered that solo.
