GDInsaniac
I love that billie joe is doing this, but i think he's really there just for more of the performance side for the contestants. Yes he's a good singer, but i don't think he should be a vocal coach. however, he is the best person to show the contestants how to do it on stage, and put on a good performance. No Rhyme Or Reason
Poor Billie. Everyone here thinks he's not a good enough singer to coach others. He's probably a lot better than we're giving him credit for! He'll have great pointers on how to sing better! Regardless, I'm sure he will have lots of good advice about the performing aspect of it too.

He'll have great pointers on how to sing better! Regardless, I'm sure he will have lots of good advice about the performing aspect of it too. I think in certain moments of certain Green Day songs, Billie can blow with the best of them (yes, blow, as in sing ) I'm talking about those big moments in 21 Guns and a lot of his Broadway belts. But if he was auditioning for the Voice, I doubt any of the judges would pick him. That doesn't mean he won't have good advice, but it'll definitely be interesting. I have to say, I wouldn't mind seeing Billie actually write something bizarre for him and Christina to perform together That would be a WTF moment for the ages. She'd out-sing the crap out of him, but if he wrote some kind of tender acoustic duet, it could actually work. I don't think Christina Aguilera is as over the top in her singing as some divas like Mariah Carey. But I honestly am basing that statement on absolutely no knowledge of her, so never mind, I'm just making shit up.
gdpony
I really can't believe he's doing this. I thought this would happen in like 10 years haha. But oh well, I'm really excited to see what Billie's contribution to the show will be. Get ready for the y'know count

Billie can sing extremely well sometimes (like in your 2 examples), and I sometimes feel like he's underrated as a vocalist. I don't give him enough credit myself most of the time. But you're probably right that he wouldn't likely be picked in a singing competition - but the same is true of a lot of popular singers. I'm curious to hear how a song with him and Christina would sound.... I'm not a fan of her at all, and I do think she over-sings a lot (like with that horrible National Anthem at the Super Bowl last year), but it could be good. It would certainly be different. Speaking of girls who sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl recently, what I would really love to hear is a duet with Billie Joe and Kelly Clarkson. Been waiting for that since 2005 They're different enough that it'd be interesting, but similar enough that they could really blend well together. And I just love them both. Edit: Whoa, when did you become Heather? Haha, I saw the picture and thought "Mercury" I might be kind of slow....

Silent Duck
Seems a bit odd he's doing this! Can't say i'll lose any sleep over it though. Appearing on talent shows always leads to massive boosts in album sales, seems like a great marketing move on Warner's behalf. Can't wait for the duet, "Midget in a Bottle". sassafrasroot
But he's not even that good of a singer him self... Whoaaaa what? No. I guess if by being a good singer you mean having an extensive vocal range, maybe. But singing isn't just about what notes you hit, it's about the passion and emotion you can express through your voice. By using those standards, I think Billie is one heck of a great singer. One of my favorites. There's something so natural about his voice, and his stage presence is amazing. To me, that's all it takes. Anyways, when I first heard this news I got a yucky feeling. From the few episodes that I watched last season, I got the impression that the mentors were more there for show than to actually help the contestants. It seems like if they were really trying to help the contestants sing, they would get actual trainers, not celebrities. But famous people boost ratings, and in the big picture that's what these shows are really about. That said, after reading through this forum, my opinion has changed a little. Although I still find it odd, I don't mind so much. His appearance on this show isn't going to make his music any less beautiful, and that's really all I care about. I do mean range and dynamics. I love Billies voice - couldn't call Green Day my favourite band if I didn't love Billies voice! I just mean when you put him on one of these shows that are about find these amazing singers...it's just...if he was competing he probably wouldn't get very far - as well as MANY other well known singers out there! I just mean by those television shows standards. Just to clear that up.

Heather.
I was curious so I looked it up---Lionel Richie was Christina's mentor last season, and he only appeared in two episodes. It'll be over in the blink of an eye! Don't know the likelihood of any performance coming out of it. For anyone who watched the show, did the mentors ever perform? Edit: Apparently each team had two celebrity mentors (Jewel was the other one), so if Billie Joe's the only one for Team Xtina this year, he might be around more. Trina
Sorry if this was already posted somewhere, but Christina talked a little about having BJ on her team in a recent interview; “He's had a tremendous amount of success in the business. I like to switch it up. This one was very intriguing because he comes from a completely different genre of music than I do. He's had tremendous obvious stage experience and touring and he would have some amazing advice and input.” - http://perezhilton.com/2012-07-28-christina-aguilera-talks-britney-spears-mariah-carey-billie-joe-armstrong/?more=yes#more-255142 Anyways, I was slightly perplexed when I first heard about this but I think it's great, really. Billie Joe is a fucking amazing singer. To me, technical ability means very, very little and many others feel the same. I don't care about what fucking octave you hit, I care about how you make me feel. He is an open soul when he sings, an incredibly expressive performer, entertainer, showman, frontman, magician, trickster...absolutely captivating, we hold our breath watching him with eyes unblinking. Besides, he has Broadway experience, knows how to sing in a tiny punk dive or at a rock and roll stadium show and anything in-between. He's learned a lot over the years, especially the past few and there's no voice I'd rather listen to than his nasal-y, non-enunciated snarl! As long as he's made to feel comfortable enough in this setting and position, I think he'll give invaluable advice. It's fantastic promotion for UDT too! I hope he gets a lots of air time. ^__^
