Billie Joe on this season of The Voice as a mentor

I find this hilarious and not at all surprising. I was actually wondering if they would know who he was. Hopefully he inspired some of them to check out Green Day's music.

Yeah, exactly. It is great promotion for the albums specifically because there are going to be people who have never heard of him!

I was expecting the contestants to not recognize him, and not be that familiar with Green Day, but I was expecting them to know who the fuck Green Day is. IMO it's like not knowing who Coldplay or U2 is (not that I have any particular affections for them... and I suppose both bands are "bigger"...), or is my view of how "big" Green Day is that warped? I guess they haven't been *that* visible to anyone who hasn't paid close attention since 2005, but...

It's really hard to tell how big they actually are, when you are so in the fan group. All I can say is that I rarely see people wearing Green Day shirts out, and I rarely really hear people talking about them.

They have sold over 70 million records (i.e., albums, singles, compilations, live albums, etc.) in the past 18 years. Over 10 million people have been added to their face book page since May 2011 (15 million to almost 25 million). I think it's safe to assume that Green Day is "pretty" big.

Of course they are huge, but it is all relative - they are an international group. Compare their stats to another group or limit it to the United States or something; they are huge in sales and the number of people who have at least a passing interest in them, but...

Sure, but I've never mentioned them and had someone say 'Who?' Maybe young teenagers...

But you have to realize the sort of people and the backgrounds of the people who are going to sign up for a show like this.

It is unfortunate yes.

But I still think it is hilarious.

The Voice contestants didn't know who Billie Joe was....

My first question is how reliable that article is. Admittedly, I don't know much about British media culture, but from what I understandThe Sun is a supermarket tabloid...a UK version of The National Enquirer. Since this article is based on a story that The Sun ran, I'm taking it with a gargantuan grain of salt. Either way...I still agree with your rant .

I actually think that is kind of hilarious and a bit of a relief that they don't know who he is. Green Day are huge worldwide but I am glad to know that they are not in the same place culturally as, say, Jay-Z or fucking Snookie.

I definitely wouldn't call it a relief. And I wouldn't even put Jay-Z in the same category as Snookie. Jay-Z has had a long career based off of some discernable talent. Snookie became part of our cultural landscape simply by being utterly useless. Back to Green Day though... I don't think it's a relief, I think it's a shame. I'm not going to sit there and say "Ugh, if you like Jersey Shore, there is no way I want to share any taste in music with you." No, damnit, this band is wonderful and I want their music to reach as many appreciative ears as possible. Also, I think exposure to a lot of different genres and styles is a good thing. It makes me happy when people have a diverse, well rounded music collection. If Green Day, who are definitely one of the bigger rock bands, aren't known to teenagers, there's a larger problem here. Aside from the fact that I love them and want them to always be wildy successful, it means there's a legitmate, historically rich style of music that just is not being heard.

But yeah...I'm calling BS on that article.

Disturbing. [Rant starts here] I understand if you're not a Green Day fan not recognizing him, that's fair enough, but then once Christina says "This is Billie Joe ... FROM GREEN DAY!" I think it's culturally inexcusable to not even have HEARD of Green Day. I was expecting the contestants to not necessarily be Green Day fans, and maybe even dislike Green Day, but to definitely KNOW WHO THE FUCK THEY ARE. Of course there's no way in hell they haven't heard a Green Day song, but still. I don't even want to see that on TV, it's embarrassing. I hope they edit it out, or at least show the contestants who DID know who he was, if there are any... jeeez.

I think the majority of the world doesn't really know who Billie Joe Armstrong is, fine. But Green Day...

OMG, if that's true, I don't know whether to laugh or cry

It seems pretty far-fetched to me though, that *no one* on The Voice would know who Billie Joe/Green Day is. We already know that Green Day has had massive cross-cultural appeal, with the likes of Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, etc. They aren't just someone that punk fans or rock fans know and listen to. Not only that, but The Voice has had contestants whose musical stylings could be classified as rock or alternative, not just pop/R&B/country. So while I could totally see some people not knowing Billie, I'm going to have a hard time buying that NO contestants know of him.

The Sun itself is disreputable, but the quotes probably aren't totally fabricated. In any event, I think this just makes me think how torn I always feel between "Fuck yeah! Green Day are the biggest band in the world!" and "They're my little band." If they were actually a small band, or thought of themselves as such, I would love to consider them my little band... but they want to conquer the world, and they have, they don't do anything half-assed... which is why it's like, I don't know, awkward for me for them to be unknown.

I'm sure a lot of the contestants DID know who he was, but who knows how The Voice will edit it and show us... they might just show us the confused people's reactions. If that's the case, I hope it's from a "Can you believe this? They've never heard of Green Day!" perspective and not a "Oh, yeah, I guess they've been kind of irrelevant..." But considering this is promo for Billie, and the nature of these types of shows, it's usually very pro-artist and heaps unnecessary praise on the mentors, right?

All right, damnit you make good points. Everyone in the world should hear and love Green Day, goddamnit. No, I am not making fun... I really do wish that XD. I'm not so worried about the people themselves as the sources they get their information from. I just don't want them to be in the same class as crap. Because goddamnit they're my band D<.

I still look forward to seeing Billie Joe's contribution to the show.... Which I have never watched before... but which I will inevitably seek out clips of now.

If I was Billie I'd say:

"You don't know who I am? Well I don't know who you are either. And I probably never will, because you'll probably fail in this show.

Now, get me some hot coffee boy!"

Yeah. I see a lot more people wearing *shudders* Linkin Park t-shirts...

That was a Tosh reference...doubt anyone would get it.

My sister watches him. I can't even be in the same room, the show makes me sick to my stomach.

I really am looking forward to seeing how they incorporate him into the show, though, and the way Christina and he interact. He named his newest guitar after her, after all :P. (He posted it on Instagram and said it is called XXTina... Probably not after her, but still fitting).

XDDD true

oops. I'm kinda new, so I just thought I'd butt in

I never watched The voice, not even my county's version, and I'm not really sure what's Billie's job as a mentor in there, but I'm really excited he'll try to mentor some competitors, it could help them a lot and I would watch the SHIT out of this show when I'll find links to watch it online.

For those who didn't know who Green day are, I'm not sure how true it is, but I really hope his appearence at the show educates some little musically oblivious brats like them

16156911.jpg

and will make them want to check out their music if they don't ALREADY know them...I agree with Heather, it's really weird they haven't even heard of them  makes me lose faith In humanity. Also makes me laugh cause I imagine how Billie reacted, maybe something like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p6-iXcVgHU&feature=player_embedded

"YOU BAND FAMOUS??"

"nah."

XDDDD

It does start today, yes :D

Though Billie probably won't show up for a few epis, since the mentors aren't really needed for the blind auditions. But we'll keep an eye out for him anyways ;)

This is exciting! Finally, the contestants would know how to ACTUALLY play impressing music.
