I don't know if this was posted, but Green Day did an interview with RTL2 (a french rock radio). They talk about the new records.

Kill The DJ review in LA Times, they don't like it very much.

http://www.latimes.c...0,5160209.story

They don't seem to dislike it, they just can't intelligently speak about it independently of The Clash. Even though it's lame to judge a song not on its own merits, I can't disagree that the song (like Oh Love, IMO) has a message that isn't being very clearly communicated. And Billie admits that he doesn't know what his songs are necessarily about when he writes them, but part of songwriting should be clarifying a bit. You can leave things in vague metaphors and up for interpretation to some extent, but there needs to be a bit more guidance or you ARE going to lose your listener. Oh Love works better in the sense that it's SO VAGUE you can just sort of listen to it. Kill the DJ implies a lot without really explaining itself (kinda like a lot of songs on 21CB).

Am I the only one who understood a meaning in those songs? KTDJ had similar meaning to Static Age, and the video represents that fairly well. Oh Love was more about not thinking about love, just going with what your body wants, the whole internal struggle there. Maybe that only makes sense to me, but the songs I've heard so far from the trilogy seem pretty explicit in their meaning, especially compared to AI and 21CB songs.

I understand the idea of Kill the DJ, because it's been explained to me, but it's hard to argue that it's clear (and the music video doesn't help).

I think the music video does help. The part where Billie, Mike and Tre are walking through the crowd and they're clearly shown to be separate, in the way they dress, their expressions and the blurred crowd shows they feel unattatched to these people and feel as though they are on a different wave length. I can see what Tamara means by the similar meaning to Static Age- that song was about being overwhelmed by the media, this song (in my interpritation) is about being overwhelmed by the evoltion music has gone through and how they don't connect with it.

Well yeah, it's obvious that Green Day wants to "Kill the DJ" in the video (because they're not a part of the club scene) but all the religious references and threats are kind of incomplete. I really like what he was going for but it was never a fully developed thought.

Great interview, fun to watch !

Yeah you need like-minded musician friends if you want to get somewhere with forming a band. I agree to that. I'm searching for such people but they seem extinct in my locality :P

I agree, I think KTDJ especially gives a pretty clear message. Oh Love is a bit more vague, yeah, but I still see a clear meaning in there.

But then I found the 21CB songs easy to understand where a lot of people didn't. Maybe it's just because I'm a writer and Billie is my biggest inspiration, so I've spent way too much time getting to know his lyrics.

I finished watching the VMA's a few minutes ago, so I switched to RTL. A commercial for the upcoming formula 1 races pops up, and a guitar starts to play in the background, and I'm like:"Hey. This sounds kinda like Oh Love...." And it is. And if they keep playing it, that is, imo, a god damn good promo for them ;) so if you're from Germany, Austria, Switzerland.... Or... Whereever from, watch out for it :D

They showed it at #8 here, I dont know why =/

That's really odd. Did the mention Angry Birds? They talked about unlocking the song on the game. Pretty cool cross promotion.
