Green Day on list of Sound alike songs

Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4/Green Day - Brain Stew

Green Day's ode to insomnia arrived in 1996 with five descending guitar chords that you could recognize instantly - probably because you heard the same progression 26 years earlier, in Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4. After the parallel introductions, both songs eventually set off in different directions, but you can't deny the similarities between the two tunes - especially since both songs feature lyrics about staying up late.

guys, i'm not sure where to post this and I'm rushing out so sorry Mods, if this is the wrong place and maybe someone can investigate the truth to it, but Channel 7 entertainment report this morning said Green Day would not be playing the Iheart Vegas show and mentioned that Billie was hospitalized. This info was emailed to me from a friend so I didn't hear it or have the deeets :(

Thats not until the end of the month so them canceling it now seems a little hard to believe.

Could also be Billie's way of getting out of talking to TMZ.

That's what I said too... but who knows...

I'll guess we'll find out Thursday night at the VMA's how his voice is doing.

TMZ, well press like them in general, just piss me off, asking questions to try and get a rise out of him...just fuck off.

I don't think his voice is gone, his throat might hurt if he's been throwing up a lot maybe, but probably just a excuse to get out of dealing with them

I saw this from the Rock Sound mag and I think it's pretty cool

21 Crayons: How We Drew All Over Green Day!

So, at the beginning of all this, Rock Sound got in touch and we had a disscussion about having some fun with a Green Day cover. We wanted to do something striking. We worked out a few concepts and hit on the idea of messing around with the pictures and doing some cartoon alterations to the band.

Green Day were wicked and did a fantastic photoshoot that seemed to work incredibly with a cartoon feel, so I did a few sketches and sent them over. After a few slight changes and alterations on style, we hit on the old school cartoon approach, and it looked awesome. So I traced the chosen images (for lining up my drawings) and added aspects of cartoon hands, guns, weights and lots of extras.

greensi1.jpg

Obviously after working with the drawings on paper, I had to make sure the pics would work, so I scanned them to my computer and laid them out, lined them up how I wanted them to look and checked with Rock Sound.

greensi2.jpg

Once I knew the pictures were working we wanted to see we if could combine three separate pictures of the guys to work together as a cover. The original concept was to use one of the group shots, but we felt three solo shots would make the mag pop hugely. I chucked something together and sent it over.

greensi3.jpg

We liked how it looked (big style), but we had to make sure we could make it fit on the cover alongside the free CD (also drawn by me) and the usual cover text / imagery. Once it was laid out we could see that some things (ie Mr Armstrong's dynamite vest) needed to go. Shame, but some of the lost aspects from the cover eventually made it into the feature - not shame!

greensi4.jpg

So after I could see what needed to go and what needed to stay I started sorting out the full images separately - on the below pic you can see the Dynamite vest was removed and the gun was reduced in size (to make sure we could fit it in).

greensi5.jpg

I had to start colouring each of the bits (a very long process, but necessary to make sure it would work once printed) so I made the line work see-through and started colouring the aspects (occasionally making sure it was still working on the photos) while listening to very loud and very fast punk music plus a load of Green Day!

greensi6.jpg

Once all the colours worked and fitted together with the line work, I started adding some shadows behind to kinda (I guess) make it look real!

greensi7.jpg

And then it eventually looked something like this. The below is still un-cropped and still in need of a clean up from Rock Sound Art Editor / beard legend / father of a nation Alistair Cook! At this point it was minor changes, cutting hair in front or behind a gun, slight colour changes and the like. We were ready to print after those alterations and I am so, so, so, SO happy with how it turned out!

Check out more of Si's work at facebook.com/SIMITCHELL.CO.UK and hit him up at @SI_MITCHELL (he loves caps lock, what can we say), check out the full and glorious cover of Rock Sound Issue 165 below and click on it to buy a copy!
