Rolling Stone interviews Green Day about trilogy

No Rhyme Or Reason

I'm wondering about this, too. I also thought they were recording at Jingletown exclusively. It could only be the mixing process in L.A. but reading the article it's not what it sounds like to me.

I got the exact opposite feeling about Jason White from the article. We know he has been in the studio with them but I don't think he has been recording. Tré says that they are rehearsing all the songs for almost a year now and for that you need Jason to play the second guitar. You also need Jason in the studio for creating the final touch on a song I think. Because I don't think all the songs are 100% finished before they go into the studio but that they're changing things at the last minute. And for that they need all instruments to be played simultaneously to hear what it sounds like, hence Jason has to be there. And there's 3 albums with each member's face on it. I don't know but I don't think Jason's roll is any different than before. But I could be totally wrong, too :P

Putting the few details we have together, it sounds like they did the bulk of the recording at Jingletown and added the just the string tracks at Ocean Way. Chris Lord-Alge works out of L.A. as well so it makes sense to ship the whole works down there for the final touches.

Rob specifically stated in the interview that most of the tracks for this project use "two guitars", and Fricke mentions Jason White as that second guitarist. Unless Billiie recorded two separate guitar parts -- which I doubt -- I would expect that Jason recorded for the album. The outstanding question is whether he's simply going to be credited as an additional musician (as, for example, Jason Freese was on 21stCB) or whether he's become an "official" member of Green Day now....guess we'll find out for sure when the complete album covers/inserts drop. He's been more involved in the entire creative process for these albums than he's ever been in the past, so my hunch is that something has indeed changed.

This is just all too exciting

Good read, but for a one-hour interview they might as well just let us read the whole thing. :)

I don't understand the significance of that last question though: does it matter if it counts as one or three albums under their record contract? Did they sign for a certain amount of albums or something?

It'll determine the band's royalties. They'll make most of their money from this production from the tour, though, so my guess is this was not a significant issue for them.

"The last record got so serious. We wanted to make things more fun."

This is about 21CB, Tre or about the Kiss albums they asked them?

Dump question is dump

I saw this in the interview:

Everyone, including Cavallo, sat down for separate interviews for an exclusive story in the new issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands Friday, about the three records' strange birth and Green Day's commercial gamble.

I wonder if we're going to hear more from these interviews in the near future. Or if that exclusive story is the scans we have or something different.

About Billie not reading music---yes, you'd think he'd have picked it up at some point, and I guarantee you he learned how to read music when he was a 5-year-old taking piano lessons. He probably knew it at some point and I feel like he mentioned at one point re-learning how to read music. As someone who did the whole school band thing for about 5 years and then dropped it, I can tell you that 6 years later, I have forgotten how to read music, but it would probably only take a few days to figure it out again. That wouldn't help me become a songwriter though, and I'm sure Billie has felt it's really not necessary. You gotta just get intimate with your instrument ;)

Yes we want the rest of the interviews, it will be a fun read !

This is how the cover turned out to be ! :D:P

"The songs just kept coming, kept coming. I'd go, "Maybe a double album? No, that's too much nowadays." Then more songs kept coming. And one day, I sprung it on the others: "Instead of Van Halen I, II and III, what if it's Green Day I, II and III and we all have our faces on each cover?"

I just read the scan and the interview on Rolling Stone website and I'm excited! :runaround: I think that the trilogy will have many different sounds like garage music, pop or dance, so everyone will be happy and like at least one album. :) I want September to come rapidly!

I love it that Billie sees it as doing something different, not going back and doing something they've already done. I hate the thought of "omg I want Dookie back" because I don't want to hear them repeating themselves... but this is going to be something new and awesome. Eek.

Pretty sure you mean "Before, During, and After Sex." A more accurate description of the three albums.

Uno - Anticipation and arousal

Dos - Lusty lunacy

Tre - Fuck, what did I just do? Consequences.

I love that little background story on Fuck Time. It's always cool to hear where songs and/or song names originally came from and what sparked Billie's inspiration to write that one particular song.

the coolest part was to find out where It's Fuck Time came from, that's really awesome!

That's so gonna be what I'm gonna make the kids say if I ever get into little-league soccer coaching.

Ahh this just makes me more anxious and excited! I'm really glad we have some real info (song titles!). The only thing I'm mad about is that "Fuck Time" will be on the album. Not because I don't like it, it's an amazng song, I just voted on GDA that it wouldn't be, because it was a Foxburo song. But oh well :) I can't wait to hear a good quality version of "Amy". I remember when the recording from the Tiki came out, I listened to it non-stop for hours. Hopefully the interviews keep coming. 97 days until Uno!

You're so right with this. The release of three albums, a triology, is so hard to realize and to believe in. Now it's actually becoming a little more reality
