Green Day to be covered on GLEE

I don't care how ridiculous this turns out... I'm graduating college May 20, two days before this airs, and I am going to burst into tears regardless when I hear this, even if I don't give one fuck about fictional high school characters graduating.

I've heard GR enough that it doesn't usually have that initial emotional impact, but this is gonna get me good. Of course, I'll probably listen to the real version on my own come graduation just for the cheese factor.

I imagine it like, all of the glee cast singing, just like what they did with the AI musical... I think that would be nice...

If it's Fin singing I will be very very sad XD His voice is really annoying.

It has to be Puck. With Quinn. Like, both of them singing most. Although I wouldn't mind some Blaine in there too.

oh so they go through the entire running of the show without once ever really playing any punk rock or grunge or hard rock and now they decide to cover green days most popular ballad why do we care as my 45 year old dad would say whatever

I kinda saw this coming as well.

But think it as a publicity stunt so Green Day can get more fans :)

I really don't think that anybody who gets curious about Green Day from Glee covering Good Riddance is gonna stick around once they hear most of Insomniac or Platypus.

I'd like to see how they cover it (: I don't mind their covers, unfortunately I made the mistake of actually watching the show and nearly killing myself because of the cringe but yeah

I like their voices

this may be unrelated, but i think what most people don't realize about glee is that it was originally supposed to be a parody in a way. season one, if you look at it analytically, is truly a parody of cliche teen dramas. that's what was supposed to make it funny. but throughout its run it's somehow transformed into being what it used to make fun of. just a thought. like i said, not really related but i just wanted to put this out there.

I know everyone's automatic reaction to this was oh puke, but I was actually looking forward to this. A bit disappointed with the song choice because I always wanted to see what they could do with a song along the vein of American Idiot, but they chose the 'slow' song. Oh well, if it's for the graduation episode.

I can't wait to hear it either way.

Haha so much hate :P

I remember there was a thread asking, 'What would you think if Glee did a Green Day song' or something along the lines of that. Now it's come true.

Personally, I don't watch the show, but if they chose a different song, I might have been sort of interested.

let's just hope they'll do a good job and not ruin the song.

and when it's out, no one should ever say that Glee's version is better than the original.

Meh. Whatever. Sure they have good voices, but I don't give a damn about the show, so yeah.

My sister is giving me so much crap for this. She LOVES the show, and I told her Green Day would never agree to have their music on there. She was completely convinced they would eventually use Good Riddance when the show started at Season 1.

The show's been on for four years and they've never done a Green Day song...you guys had to know this was coming! Even my mom, who has never watched it before, saw one of the 'countdown to the graduation' commercials and said "Gee...I wonder if they'll sing Time of Your Life." while rolling her eyes. That was my graduation song 12 years ago, my cousin's last year, and it'll probably still be used 50 years from now.

They're totally gonna ruin it! It's just like when Kidz Bop covered "Blvd of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends", and they totally ruined those songs! I hate it when these dumb asses cover bands I like!

To be fair to Glee, their covers are nowhere near as bad as Kidz Bop ones ... those are meant to dumb down and make the songs as kid-friendly as possible, with awkward results. Glee can actually, arguably, do some songs OK, because they do try to maintain some elements of the original. Their results are mixed and your mileage may vary on them (like, I'll fully admit I prefer their Don't Stop Believin' to the original; of course, I fucking hate Journey), but although I'm not happy they're covering them, I'm not expecting it to be Kidz Bop bad. I hope that makes sense.

At least, I'm hoping it won't be. :ermm::lol:

It seems silly to be concerned about ANY pop singers butchering a song like GR. The kids on Glee (who are mostly 20somethings around the same age as the cast of American Idiot) include actual broadway singers (and other broadway-caliber) that the results should come out around the same as the AI musical cast version of the song. There's really nothing to complain about. If they were doing pretty much ANY other Green Day song, of course we'd be like WTF, no. But this is such a pop standard I'm really surprised people think they'll fuck it up.

Of course, the beautiful thing about Good Riddance is that somehow, incredibly, nothing has or can beat the original. And that's not true for all Green Day songs (see the musical, which made LNOE, KYE, She's a Rebel etc. more interesting).

I also see no problem with Glee covering Good Riddance. Why? Because it's fucking Good Riddance! It has been covered so many times in popular media, it has been played on so many high school proms, funerals, and tv show endings and has been covered by so many pop artists, who even cares at this point that there's another cover. I also think Glee covering Good Riddance was an incredibly obvious thing. I totally saw it coming.

Also, I agree with Mercury that a lot of the actors on Glee are great singers and it will probably sound just like the AI cast cover.

The only thing that could be annoying would be all the Glee fans saying that the Glee version is superior to the original, even though the original will never be beaten. Or the Glee fans who won't even recognize Good Riddance to be a Green Day song but a Glee song. But I think most people don't even connect Good Riddance with Green Day anymore anyway, so whatever. It's just that one sad acoustic song that everyone plays who gets a guitar in their hands on a party.

Good Riddance was originally going to be on the Broadway cast recording but was cut to make room for "When It's Time."

I bet they're just going to use the same arrangement as the cast version at the end of American Idiot. Which, if they do, will be a wonderful thing.

Here's the cast version that was going to be on the cast recording (which I'm glad didn't since it's sooooo autotuned, but that'll be perfect for "Glee"):
