Green Day @ Oracle Arena, Oakland - 12/9/11

If someone can tell me how to post videos and pictures directly into a post, I'll post them all asap.

Where I was (center barricade) everyone was totally rocking out during Green Day. Florence mentioned Green Day coming up, and you could tell she's a HUGE fan, and the same with Mumford--they said they couldn't believe they were playing a show with GD and couldn't wait to see them. AND the banjo player for Mumford crowd-surfed during Green Day haha!

Also, security were telling us before GD came out that they didn't care about the curfew, and were already prepared to write a check for whatever amount necessary to pay any fines for playing longer. They were scheduled to play for 1.5 hours instead of the 40 minutes originally allotted for Jane's Addiction.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet, but I gotta say-- it's awesome to see Green Day as a 3-piece, in raw form for this show! No eyeliner, no "tour outfit", no guitar effects.... just in-your-face Green Day covering their hit songs. I think Jason has been an excellent addition to the band, but after seeing these videos it reminds me of when I would go to see Green Day in concert in the late '90s and during the Warning era.

It's also awesome to see them pull of playing this show so last-minute like this. Just enough time to get their equipment there and on the stage. I would have to image that a lot of their usual stage people weren't present for this, which I'm sure is why they had to stick to the basics for this show, but they still pulled it off and I'm sure over-compensated for the absence of Janes Addiction. Good job, fellas!

I really hope the setlist for the next tour is something similar to this. Welcome to Paradise and 2000 Light Years Away as openers? Holy shit.

haha the girl next to the man is my daughter Laurel, and I'm next to her (my shoulder's in the pic). This was just so unbelievable--WE WERE FIRST IN LINE!! (there for Florence and Mumford, and were going to leave before Jane's lol). 11 minutes before doors we found out that Jane's was canceling and Green Day was playing--we couldn't believe it! I texted Live 105, and they texted me back and told me it was true. We got into th arena first, and were front and dead center at the barricade. Loved all the bands, and couldn't believe we were going to see Green Day too! I went to both bay area secret shows (1-2-3-4 Go! and the Mezzanine) but my daughter couldn't go to either because she isn't 21, so she was BEYOND excited!

The set-list was fucking amazing! I have lots of pics and some videos--I'll post a link a little later today.

SO WHY THE HECK DID THEY ONLY LET THEM PLAY FOR ONLY ONE HOUR (and possibly 5 minutes more). They started at 10:45, instead of 10:30 like they were suppose to. They ended at about 11:45 or 11:50 because I remember looking at the time on my phone and thinking, "Oh no (I might have actually thought of a more explicit word)! I have to make it to Bart before it stops running!" It usually stops running at around 12:00 or 12:15. There was a BIG crowd rushing for BART. Then again, now that I think about it, that might have been the reason why they ended it. There were hundreds (possibly thousands) of people that had depended on Bart to get there and leave on and would have been stuck without transportation if it had gone on much longer. I wasn't even thinking about that when I was rushing to get there. I just knew that I wasn't going to be taken for $30 to $35 dollars for parking like I did once before (I learned my lesson).

How awesome to be going for other bands, be first in line, and then find out that your favorite band is replacing a band that you didn't want to see. That had to be shocking...in a good way! I have never heard of Florence and the Machine or Mumford and Sons. I got there half way through the Mumford and Sons set and was totally bored with them and glad that I didn't have to be there for the other bands. That show was the least interesting set of bands that I could think of for the NSSN and was not the least bit interested in going. Green Day was the best thing to ever happen to it...no, I am not the least bit biased!LOL

Great review of the show by Dakin Hardwick of spinningplatters.com

You know what’s great about living on Oakland, CA? You never know when you are going to end up at a Green Day concert. This was the second time that I saw Green Day play without even knowing that they were going to be performing until early evening that day. I highly recommend keeping your ears open fellow bay area folks, because these are their best sets. And, anyone that made it out to Live 105′s Not So Silent Night were treated to the best.

It’s not often that a band can play an arena on only a few hours notice. It’s even less often when you can get one of the few stadium-sized bands currently playing to show up so quickly. But, there aren’t very many Green Days out there. So, yes, Green Day aren’t playing this show completely cold. In fact, they’ve been playing secret gigs all over the place since September, including an instore at 1-2-3-4 Go Records in Oakland, and popping out after a Ty Segall show in San Francisco. This show, however, was nothing like those shows. In fact, this show was nothing like any Green Day show since the 90′s.

I knew something special was afoot when the roadies set up the gear. The stage was amazingly bare: Two microphones, two amps, one drum kit. No confetti canons, no keyboards, none of the trappings of the type of show Green Day are doing these days. It was just Mike Dirnt, Tre Cool, and Billie Joe Armstrong. The last time these guys played a show as the core three may have been the Insomniac tour. Armstrong and Dirnt had matching died blonde hair that was spiked as very high as it could go, while Cool was dressed in his usual dapper best: slacks, short sleaved black dress shirt and tie. And, although their look may have changed dramatically over the years, none of them have aged a day since 1993.

And, in addition to the band looking like they had in 1993, they also sounded like the did in 1993. They opened with “Welcome To Paradise,” a track that was originally released on 1992′s Kerplunk. The rest of the set followed suit, with the band pumping out hit after 1990′s pop punk hit. No ballads. No mini rock operas. Just pure, simple, 2 1/2 minute long rock songs.

Billie Joe Armstrong explained how they ended up agreeing to this set in typical Green Day fashion. He said, “So we got this call from Live 105. They said that Jane’s Addiction had to cancel due to a family situation. It looks like they called the first band they could think of that lived 10 minutes away, and here we are.” They then pulled out an vamped out version on “Hitchin’ A Ride” that stretched itself out for about 5 minutes. Armstrong called out Florence Welch from Florence + The Machine to come on stage for a hug, who was intense and dignified during her band’s set, but was ecstatic as a Bieber fan when she got called out by Armstrong, and looked like she was about to both melt and cry tears of joy during the embrace.

The crowd, which was, sadly, only about 2/3 full during this set, was supercharged with energy. There were no less then 5 different pits going at once, while not a single person was seated in the bleachers during the band’s set. They kept the whole show old school, with the only modern day Green Day track being the set closing “American Idiot,” which could have easily fit on any of their classic records.

As per the usual, Green Day triumphed at this hometown gig. They proved that they still have the ability to be a snotty little punk band, and the fans that switched out their plans and got last minute tickets to this gig were treated to one of the most memorable sets of their lives.

Finally, here are my videos from Not So Silent Night (NSSN). Keep in mind that I was in the front row, center barricade, with security standing right in front of me and not supposed to be video taping, so I was pretending to be taking pictures, and moving my camera around a bit, so the videos aren't super steady.

Thanks for the awesome videos. I was in the front row on the side stage on Mike's side so these are a great view from the front. Billie Joe came over and smiled at all of us and played some guitar solos, but these are great.

Thank you for posting that interview, desertrose. What they said in that article is so true when the reviewer said, you never know when you are going to end up at a Green Day concert and to keep your ears open. That is why I always try to tell myself to keep my phone charged because you never know when there might be an earthquake or a surprise Green Day show...either one is likely to happen at any time while living in the Bay Area! LOL I did not listen to myself because I went to the show with my phone at less that 60% battery life. Luckily it worked out and left the concert with the battery life at 20%.

Yes Mozzabillie, we are lucky to be living in the Oakland bay area. We are a lucky few to be able to see them play at a hours notice, whether they are playing a small club or an arena of 20,000. You can sense that the were loving playing in front of a big crowd again. The were great Friday and to see the three of them again and they were having so much fun playing. I remember seeing them in the early days and the energy is much the same. Let's hope we don't have to wait much longer for another show. I am sure they gained some new fans that night.

So the only song we're missing footage for, is "She" right?

I found two vids of She.

I have a whole complete video setlist in this (NSSN) photo album description on my page. If anyone is interested? I'm not sure how to post it without it taking up too much room here. So here's a LINK

Wow, Sharon (Laurelw), when you said you had some good videos, you were not kidding! They are FANTASTIC!!! Thank you so much for sharing them. I need to start taking my camera to the shows again instead of just my Iphone. Of course, I would have to keep that battery charged up, too, just in case (and get extra digital cards). I just don't really have room on my computer to put them on there, though, if I did. Thank you so much again!

Did someone post an interview somewhere with Florence + Machine after she went on stage with Green Day?
