Christina.
This is one of my favourites. Whenever I listen to it I think about Billie and Adrienne's relationship and the real strength of it. The line "waste with me into nothing" resonates with me and to me, speaks of the sacrifices one makes in relationships where you're no longer just one person. It's kind of an apologetic little song but I get goosebumps whenever I listen to it because you can really feel the love and gratitude Billie has for Adrienne. Well that was my 2 cents
TheAdventure
I'm still not 100% convinced about the lines 'Moving on and I always thought, I realized you've imagined'. Maybe Billie just got a severe case of the mumbles, but it just doesn't sound like he's singing those words. I always thought he sang "Feel better on your worst day and I realize you've imagined". I thought it meant that she would one day realize that being with him wasn't so great that she just imagined that those bad times were good. Who knows though, that line is kinda slurred. Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love
The title of the song is funny. And the way Billie sings the last "stuck with me" of the chorus before the instrumental part is just great. It's all ... well, kind of like dragging. I've already made a post in this thread and don't really have anything to add right now that I haven't said already, but now it's got a bit about the song in here, so... I think the younger audience on here appreciates the song less than the few of us slightly older audience. I've been hearing Green Day's music since 1994, so not having just started listening to the band only since American Idiot leaves me much more open-minded to their variations of material, in my opinion. I think a lot of the audience just has to remember that Green Day didn't always sound like American Idiot or 21st Century Breakdown. And their sound is going to change again in the future. The guys are constantly changing their sound, and though I'd still love to hear another Insomiac or even 39/Smooth-sounding album from them, I love that they do that and I always love the new material they put out. I think that is absolute bullshit. This community is full of fans who love all their music. If they only liked AI or 21stCB, they wouldn't spend so much time on here or call themselves fans, because this community is all about all their music. What you said applies to only a (very) small percentage of the members on here. Just because younger fans discovered the band because of AI or 21stCB instead of Dookie, doesn't mean they're any less open to their back catalogue or variations in their music than older fans, or like it any less. And saying that a lot of the community "just has to remember that Green Day didn't always sound like American Idiot or 21st Century Breakdown" is downright condescending. American Idiot made me discover Green Day, because it was their latest album out at the time. I'm sure it would've been exactly the same with any other album. Just because AI is the first Green Day I heard, doesn't mean I'm any less of a fan. The first album I actually purchased was Dookie, because I thought it sounded cool and had some great songs. Great song choice, I personally think Do Da Da is considerably underrated!
iWroteHoldenCaulfield84
Not trying to stir stuff up becomes I'm more mature than that, but just wanted to point out a few keywords in my statements: "...so not having just started listening to the band only since American Idiot leaves me much more open-minded to their variations of material, in my opinion." "I think a lot of the audience just has to remember that Green Day didn't always sound like American Idiot or 21st Century Breakdown." It's all my opinion, and not directed at everyone, based on the parts that I bolded and underlined. It is just something that I've noticed with several fans from the time that I was within the fan average-age up to now where I'm 10+ years older than the average fan. Not saying that all younger fans don't enjoy their older material as much as their newer material, but it can't be disagreed that many feel that way. I'm just happy that I was able to experience their first explosion in the music industry on top of their 2004 re-explosion.
-Billiejoezee-
My favorite song off of Shenanigans. Simply perfect. I've always fucking loved this song. Words can't describe how amazing this song is. Just like pulling teeth, I wish this song was longer!
Hermione
This is one of my joint favourite songs on Shenanigans. You can tell it's from Insomniac times with that sharp contrast between a simple catchy melody and dark depressed lyrics, it's from the sadder side of Insomniac rather than the snotty or aggressive side. I always think of it as being a dark and pessimistic view of marriage. The line "Handcuff your soul to my wrist and I'll vow my trust to you " screams marriage, along with "Well now you're stuck with me" itself. It's sad lyrics about his guilt for burdening this other person with his problems and faults, and now they've made a vow to be together and are really stuck like that, to "waste with me into nothing" together. It's a view of one regretful aspect of a long term relationship, a magnification of that one fear. Not trying to stir stuff up becomes I'm more mature than that, but just wanted to point out a few keywords in my statements: "...so not having just started listening to the band only since American Idiot leaves me much more open-minded to their variations of material, in my opinion." When it comes to this song it really has nothing to do with age or when people got into the band. There's songs from every era of Green Day that lots of people on here love and songs from every era of Green Day that lots of people on here don't care about so much. Do Da Da just happens to be the latter. Even the band only made this song a b-side rather than considering it good enough put on an album so it's not exactly surprising that it's not loads of people's favourite, it's not considered their "A" material even by the band themselves (although I don't share that opinion ). We can all listen to and appreciate all of Green Day's albums regardless of how old we are or when we got into them, being older or listening to them for longer gives you no advantage in being able to appreciate the music. If you have a look around in some previous Song Of The Week threads you'll see just as much appreciation for their old stuff from younger people as for their new stuff, there's really no need to differentiate based on age here on GDC
J'net
Hmmmm - I always thought it was "Handcuff yourself to my wrist ..." Of course, I typically will go years mis-hearing a Green Day lyric until the day when someone sets me right . I love this song and all its implications. I think Billie often sees himself as weak and Adrienne as strong - as his lifesaver. In a way, it's very sweet - in another way, it could be a cop out - "I can misbehave because I always acknowledge that my soul-mate is the strong one, and I'm the weak one." I think Billie has probably used it both ways ;-). This song also reminds me of Jinx, especially this part:... Until death do we partYou fell for a jinx for crying out loudI'm a curse hanging around you
justcause
Hmmmm - I always thought it was "Handcuff yourself to my wrist ..." Yeah, that's what I hear - it makes more sense. I also hear some kind of 'for better or worse/ or you're worse', like 'you're worse off' in the lines that follow. So, you're maybe looking back at a wedding day - the vows and the ring and all the happy promise of that moment - but now the vision twists. The other person seems to be only getting the 'for worse' part of the deal, and the ring is revealed as a handcuff, shackled to someone on a downward spiral. It resonates with 'Jinx' - 'until death do us part / you fell for a jinx' - like, you didn't know what you were signing up for, 'your nemesis disguised as your fatal long-lost love', this sense of illusion with a darkness shadowing under it. This is, in many ways, a fairytale romance.
Mar
I'm still baffled as to how that mistake happened - that it was too late/too many of the albums had been printed/whatever before that mistake was noticed!

Bastard of 1967
This is, in many ways, a fairytale romance. Or perhaps the other side of it -- the darkness that lies on the other side of the "euphoria" coin, what you see after the glee wears off and you really get to know the person you've chosen to stick yourself with. Great posts by so many in this thread...sorry for being late to the table (again). Will try better with "Scattered" this week.
