Hermione
Shortly before I first heard this song when I was 15, a Green Day fan had been trying to convince me that Green Day were amazing but I wasn't really interested. Then I heard this song and thought "Irish jig - no thanks" . So it's this song's fault I didn't get into Green Day 5 years earlier than I did (actually it's totally my fault ). Now the Irish jig-ness is one of the things I really like about it. I love the message of the song about being an individual, simple and strong. And the fast paced, singalong music propels the message along, it's like doing a jig together to celebrate it . And doing a march together to not only celebrate it but stand up for it too, with that crisp marching drum beat. For some reason I was never particularly excited about seeing it live, but like a lot of other songs I didn't think would be live favourites it proved me wrong. So much fun live. And I love watching Billie play that solo, as well as Tre going through Mike's legs and the special dance that Jasons White and Freese do
Hermione
I forgot to post about the video! Don't remember where I read it but apparently they didn't want Billie to wear that golf-type cardigan he's wearing in the Minority video, but he insisted on wearing it. I like that and think of it every time I watch it . Also, the computer animated "balloons" of the bandmembers are rubbish . It always makes me laugh when I see them because they're so bad. And my favourite things about the video are the clip of Billie running around wearing some of the material from the float as a cape like a super hero, and that fabulous hat that mysteriously appears on Tre's head at the end. On an unrelated note, if my mum ever hears Minority she says "Why are you listening to Irish folk music?" and then starts singing this song to the tune of it lol

Bastard of 1967
Shortly before I first heard this song when I was 15, a Green Day fan had been trying to convince me that Green Day were amazing but I wasn't really interested. Then I heard this song and thought "Irish jig - no thanks" . So it's this song's fault I didn't get into Green Day 5 years earlier than I did (actually it's totally my fault ). And I love watching Billie play that solo, as well as Tre going through Mike's legs and the special dance that Jasons White and Freese do Celebration. That's Minority in a nutshell -- it's not just an admission or a confession that the narrator is marching to the beat of his own drum, but it's celebrating that difference. "I want to be the minority" -- being different from the crowd is a virtue, it's a value, it's something to aspire to and rejoice in. This core message puts Minority a few cuts above the otherwise-similar place that other artists have gone before. (This includes Green Day -- compare Outsider, which acknowledges difference but hides in self-deprecating shame from it). The whole concept behind the video is epic. From start to finish it emphasizes this message -- there's a full-blown parade marching right down the middle of the street -- float, band, balloons, a dancing color guard -- and that's it. The streets are vacant and there's nobody there to watch! For most of us, this would be the highlight of embarrassment -- you're throwing your own parade and nobody comes out to see it. This doesn't matter to Green Day, though. "Fuck 'em all, you are your own sight", you can have the time of your life marching in your own little parade, and whether you like it or not doesn't matter to anyone else except you." 8)
melissawebster
I love this song so much and relate to it more than probably any other Green Day song. It's one of the reasons Warning is my third favorite Green Day album. Great song choice!
24HrRevengeTherapy
This was probably the second Green Day song I ever heard, right after Brain Stew, heh. I loved it when I heard it of course, but nowadays it's probably one of my least played Green Day songs. Still, it's very nostalgic and gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside when I listen to it. J'net
I had been listening to Green Day and liking their music for quite a few years before this one came out, but Minority was the song that "punched me in the gut" and turned me into a die-hard Green Day fan. I had struggled all my life with wanting to please the people who loved me while needing to be true to myself. Somehow, I always felt there was something wrong with me that I didn't fit in with all those around me. It's impossible to describe what happened inside me when I heard that line, "The only way I know!" But I can say that I've never regretted being the way I am since that moment. It took me a lot of years to get to that point of realizing what so many people had been trying to tell me all my life ... "Just be yourself." I now consider Minority to be my anthem, and as Hermione and "Bastard" have mentioned, it's a celebration of being different - of not fitting in - of just being whoever I happen to be. I no longer feel a need to be apologetic for being myself. And guess what, those people who loved me before I heard this song ... they love me still .
