Billie Joe's Prank & Recap of Green Day's Halloween Show

I’m posting this simultaneously on Idiot Club and Green Day Authority. Hope that’s okay, ‘cause I’m trying to include everything all at once and I’m not sure I could write this twice. Thanks so much to all of you for your concern and for rooting for me to make it into the show. That meant so much when things looked pretty hopeless, and I hope I do you justice with this recap.

Okay, here goes. I was standing outside in my slutty ladybug :P costume freezing my ass off with a couple of other girls hoping they'd let in a few extra people once everyone got inside, and this guy came up to me and asked me if I wanted to be his +1 for the Green Day show. It was a total HOLY FUCK moment, and I got in line with him. Wanna guess who was in line right next to him? Ha! It was the Idiot Club's Marc! So, I told him we (as in you guys) were all just talking trash about him on the forum (no, not really :P ). Okay, what I really said was you were all really excited for him for also scoring a ticket and it was weird that he was standing right in front of me when I was just reading about him online.

So they finally let us in with a crack security process that could rival airport security. I mean, they searched my bag and made me pull my computer out. Speaking of my bag, they had coat check and I was able to check the bag so I didn't have to hold it the whole time, which you guys don't care about and I'm rambling. Sorry, I'm still half-asleep.

Okay, so to the main event. It was a fairly modest sized room, so the rumors about a big event with 300+ people were exaggerated. I'm not sure about the head count, but I don't see how that many people could've fit. Danny, my angel of mercy who literally rescued me from the cold and I and his two friends Huey and Chad got inside and immediately started hugging, high-fiving and eventually we moved on to shots and toasts at our good fortune for being lucky enough to score a chance to see our favorite band in such a small setting. I was doubly grateful because I flew all the way from Mobile on the chance that I’d be able to get in and things were looking pretty grim, plus these were die-hard (but not creepy stalker weird) Green Day fans and I knew we were going to have fun.

We waited around for what felt like an hour before the opening act came on, and I don't know the band's name so I hope somebody else will be able to post that info. Everything got started later than scheduled, but OMG! it was worth the wait. Chad worked something out with one of the security guys and got us a spot on the side of the stage. My knees were bumping against the stage, and the security guys were right next to me guarding the stage steps & door to backstage. The opening band came on and we were dancing, and they were really good by the way, when suddenly balled up pieces of paper started flying onto the stage bouncing off the lead singer, who I think was the target, and the lead guitar player. I didn't pay much attention until Chad nudged me and told me to look behind me.

I turned around and Billie Joe was about 3 feet behind me with nobody in-between us, and he was ripping pages out of a magazine, balling them up and throwing them onto the stage. So I put my hand out and he put a balled up piece of paper in my hand and I threw it onto the stage while he threw another piece onto the stage. So, here we were, me and Billie Joe Armstrong throwing balled up pieces of paper at the guys in the band onstage. It was so fucking unreal. And we were doing this for a couple of minutes until he ripped out several pages at once and handed them to me so I could continue throwing paper while he went backstage. Okay, he didn’t actually give instructions or anything, but, well, I assumed he wanted me to continue throwing the paper, because, I mean, what else would I do with it? Another HOLY FUCK moment.

Of course, he could have just been annoyed that I ruined his prank. Oops! Sorry Billie! ;p

I held onto those pages throughout most of the concert, and I and two girls who were standing next to me started collecting the balled up pieces of paper they could reach from the stage and we made a plan to throw them back at Billie Joe towards the end, before they started on the encore songs. We recruited a couple more people for this, so that there were about six of us waiting to throw paper at Billie Joe, though I'm fairly certain a couple of people held onto their paper, especially the paper from the stack Billie Joe handed me, because I passed around pages so we could do what he wanted and throw it onto the stage. Not sure he meant for us to throw it AT HIM though. :P Chad thought I was nuts for not keeping the pages.

Adrienne and some of the cast members from American Idiot, along with who I'm told were some music big wigs were standing a few feet behind me hanging out and dancing a little. Just in case anyone was wondering, Danny and Huey disappeared about half-way through the show, but Chad stuck it out with me until the end. It was such an amazing time. We danced non-stop and I bantered back and forth with the security guy next to me, who was really cool about us squeezing into his space. In fact, I was really impressed with their security, especially the ones around the stage. They jumped into action the moment there was any kind of threat to Billie Joe and the others, but mostly Billie Joe, who sometimes caused it.

Billie Joe crowd-surfed a couple times and the security guy was holding his ankle like one of those parents who has their kid on a leash. It was funny and a bit scary at the same time. Um, the songs mostly sounded like the ones from the other two shows that I’ve heard. But yeah, they definitely remind me of Nimrod and Warning. I was so close to a speaker, most of the songs I didn’t immediately recognize sounded kind of jumbled together. I’m hoping I get my hearing back in a couple of days. :D And “Stray Heart” remains my favorite of the new songs. A girl grabbed a set list that was taped to the floor of the stage and a security guy immediately jumped into action and snatched it back from her, so I can only give you a handful of songs I remember hearing.

From the new list: Stray Heart, Sweet Sixteen (?), Carpe Diem… and that’s all I remember.

From the encore: Hitchin’ a Ride, Letter Bomb (I think), Welcome to Paradise, It’s FuckTime, etc… pretty much everything they played at the last two shows. Sorry guys, I was too busy being caught up in the moment and having fun at my first Green Day show to keep track of the songs. Hopefully, someone else has a set-list.

And a few random things: Billie Joe had white face makeup with black zippers on his cheeks and black around his eyes. Zombie or corpse? The guitarist (not sure of his name) next to BJA was wearing a top hat and had white face makeup with red on his cheeks. Mike Dirnt’s hair is getting even longer. Because of where I was standing, I didn’t see Tre Cool the entire night until the very end when they were leaving the stage and Tre ran up to the mic and yelled something out to the audience. Oh yeah and Tre Cool was wearing a pink ballerina outfit with a skirt and fairy wings and pink socks with stripes, and his hair was sticking up all over the place. Seriously, he looked like a deranged cheerleader on crack. Adrienne and the female AI cast members were wearing black mustaches. Reference to Jon Huntsman's daughters? Somebody in the audience threw a pink boa onstage and Billie Joe picked it up and wrapped it around his neck. He had a pink feather from it stuck in his hair for a while after he took the boa off ;p

I had so much beer spilled on me, the slutty ladybug is pretty much toast, so I’ll throw it away, but I’m keeping the antennae. Hmmm… now that I think about it, maybe I should keep the whole costume. I think it might be lucky. :D

Thanks so much for the recap! My friends and I were standing right behind you guys - we had M & M costumes on for a while til they got too hot. The whole paper throwing thing was hysterical! He's such a kids sometimes, and it's so great to see. Were you standing with a guy with a spiky haircut drinking beer? he kept high-fiving me; he thought I was someone else, lol.

what did billie do when you guys thew the paper at him?

I remember when the paper came back at him. That made me laugh, especially since I had heard people say it was him and Tre throwing it at the opening band. The opening band was the No-No Spot or No-No Zone, there's some confusion about exactly their name, but it was John Gallagher, Jr., the main target of Billie Joe's paper throwing on bass, Michael Esper on guitar, and Gerard Canonico on drums. These three guys are from American Idiot. The fourth guy's name was not in AI, and I don't know his name.

Billie didn't really react at all when the paper came back at him, if I remember correctly. He was really into playing guitar at the time, but one big piece came out of nowhere, and he reacted momentarily, but I can't remember exactly what he did, lol.

what did billie do when you guys thew the paper at him?

I'm not sure he even noticed. He didn't act like he did anyway. Like I said, some of the people kept the paper. Jason (TheAmericanidiot: thanks for telling me his name!) was in front of me and Billie Joe was on the other side of him. So I had to lob the paper over Jason's head to hit Billie Joe. Other paper hit him from other directions, but most of it ended up on the floor. He was much better at the prank than we were apparently. :P

Where were you standing? You must have been right in front. I didn't see Tre throwing paper, unless he was doing it before I turned around. There was a guy holding the magazine out to Billie Joe so he could rip the pages out, but he didn't look like Tre. Unless tre looks really different when he's not on stage or in photos?

Thanks for the recap! Your story with Billie is so special. We think that Billie was dressed as Jack of Nightmare before Christmas...

Okay, that makes sense, at least with his face. Loved that movie.

You are one very lucky person. Stray Heart is also my favorite new songt btw :)

I felt very lucky. I can't believe how it fell into place. I almost lost a few toes to frostbite, but it was worth the sacrifice. :P

"Oh my Jesus of Suburbia!" That is going to be my new favorite phrase. :D Yeah, I'm keeping the costume. :P
