Blink 182's Mark Hoppus appeared on UK morning sports show Soccer AM this weekend. One of the questions he was asked was whether Green Day or Blink 182 started "Pop Punk."

Hoppus is asked the question at around 3:50, to which he quickly replies that Green Day were before them. The Blink bassist then goes on to jokingly claim that Blink 182 did in fact invent the genre. It's a pretty entertaining interview, he also talks more about his band and other stuff he's up to at the moment:

Green Day is punk, not pop punk.

Hahhahahah Mark Hoppus cracks me up :D

The Queers and the Buzzcocks created pop punk. I don't think Green Day "invented" something (let alone Blink)

I'm so sick of this endless Green Day vs. Blink 182 battle.

It's obvious that Green Day was there before Blink, right?

It's everyone's personal choice what band they like better. (For me, it definitely is Green Day^^)

I always feel offended when someone calls Green Day 'pop punk'

pop and punk are words that don't really get together in my opinion ....

green day is punk i don't know why people say that they are pop even if one album isn't punk that doesn't change the fact of who they are !

I think of all bands in the pop punk limelight, they will forever be compared to Green Day because Green Day are the biggest to come out of it, in my opinion. Green Day exploded and did something that nearly every band that tries failed: they reinvented themselves. Bands like Blink-182 don't have to do that because they're so good at what they do now and they're obviously comfortable with how they sound. I think Sum 41 tried to do what Green Day did, and that obviously didn't work out for them nearly as well. No disrespect towards them or anybody who likes them or anything. It seems silly to compare Blink to GD now because I think Blink is definitely the more pop punk band as Green Day was, but now they're moving to a more punk style than other pop punk bands.

It's fact that Green Day came before Blink, but Green Day wasn't the first or necessarily the best for that fact. I do think they were the best but not because they came first. I mean we are on a Green Day themed website so that was a bit obvious.

just here to say that mark hoppus is perfect. that will be all.

also, pop punk is definitely a genre, and although green day are no longer pop punk - nor are they straight up punk, to be honest - they certainly were with dookie, at the very least.

Mark Hoppus is so beautiful and funny.

Those two bands didn't invent the genre. It was invented long before them. They just made it popular and pushed it into mainstream. Green Day did that the first time and blink the second time, so both bands are the heroes of pop punk, just at another time.

And I must agree, I used to feel offended when someone called Green Day pop punk, but I got along with it.

At least one of the guys in Blink isn't a dick. A little clueless maybe, but at least not a massive jerk.

if i were to put Green Day in any genre label, i'd go with punk rock. i think they belong there with the likes of The Ramones and The Clash. At the same time, i agree with what Green Day themselves say about the subject. They don't try to put themselves in any of those 'categories.' They do what they do, and cover a lot of genres. Other people can label them this or that, but at the end of the day, they do what they want. And if anything, to me that's punk rock.

Green Day is more influential than Blink 182 thats for sure.

Seems strange it being on Soccer AM - doesn't seem the right place for it!

Is it strange to say that I've never been interested in the debate over who invented punk/pop punk, or whether Green Day is punk? It's never been an issue to me just because I like the music I like, what ever label or genre it is. I know I like Green Day, whether or not they are labeled "punk" or "pop punk", I just like them. I also know I'm a fan or Blink 182, and other bands like them. It doesn't matter to me who came first, what invented what, or any supposed rivalry between them. I just like the music.

anyways, nice interview :)

I hate the debate of whether Green Day is punk or not. I don't care. I love them. That's all that matters.

I think they got him on because he's a Chelsea fan.

he also talks about football a lot on twitter - "kick it to the guy!!!", to be specific.

Great interview.

But music categories and defining acts to certain genres is bullshit if you ask me. The music is there to be enjoyed, not to classified or categorized. Artists should not be confined to only play one style of music just because "oh you cant do that, its so not punk". Fuck parameters

I don't have anything aginst Blink 182 but seriously Mark made himself look like an ass "I'll take the credit for it if you want." These Green Day vs Blink 182 rivals are pointless its like Nirvana vs Hole no point what so ever

green day is not punk oh my god the closest thing they ever got to it was insomniac

Mark always makes me laugh when he's interviewed!

With the whole punk or not punk deal with Green Day. Who cares? It's not like a competition on who created or "made big" first. Music is music.
