Walking Contradiction

Good choice and great article as always pasalaska to recognise Insomniac's birthday.

I really like the album, and whilst the pace of this song isn't quite the same as the others, the lyrics are just fantastic.

there's a band called The Bravery who did a song called Unconditional and i've always thought they must have been inspired by this song when they wrote it as it has the same theme of contradicting itself with almost every line. i think they're from San Fran so no doubt they are influenced by GD.

anyway, i shall play nothing but Insomniac tomorrow!!!

Great OP as ever! Doing a great job with these Aska :)

This was one of the songs i fell in love with when i rediscovered Insomniac a couple of years after it came out. I hardly listened to it at first, but on holiday one year with my parents, i put in my CD player (old boy!) and this song struck me for it's awesome lyrics. I thought it was the cleverest thing right then, and still do.

The song doesn't really get the attention it deserves, perhaps because it's stuck on the end of the album. Yay for SOTW giving it some well deserved air time! :D

Insomniac is still one of my favorite albums EVER, and this song is just completely perfect for the "theme" I get from the whole thing. It made me realize even more how clever of a lyricist Billie is, and I always think of my sister when I hear this song, and every time I hear the word "contradiction," come to think of it. One of the funniest things I can remember about this song is when I first showed the video to one of my friends back in high school, and she was in total shock the whole time they were wreaking havoc. ^_^ and then right at the end when the building went down, all she said was "Those 3 need to be hanged." She was kidding, of course, but I thought it was a really funny reaction to the whole thing. Awesome choice!

Brilliant, brilliant song. Fabulous stuff a great ending to a great album. The video sums up Green Day for me

I remember this being my first favorite song off of Insomniac, I still love it, especially the lyrics are great.

And the music video is the best ever anyway.

Insomniac doesn't get enough love. It's so great, this song is a perfect example.

I'd have to say that even though I like this song, it's still one of my least favourite off Insomniac (the mother of all albums!)... but, having said that I really like the video, does anyone know how the bit with the police cars was done?

One of my first thoughts upon seeing the video was a derisive one about Billie's goatee thing. It's just wrong. It looks like a mouse died on his chin.

I love this song! I had it on repeat all the time before.

When I first watched the music video I laughed fucking hard. (might be because I was goddamn hyper on soda, but still)

This is one of the first Green Day songs I knew. I remember how 12 year old me and 2 of my friends spent hours watching the videoclip on the computer and then walked down the street trying to recreate it. :'D Those were the days.

I used to freaking love this video when I was younger (not that I don't love it now, but I've seen it that many times) it used to make me laugh so much and naturally made me love the song equally as much. I always put my ipod in and do a purposeful walk to *insert destination here* and listen to this, it's like I've got a little inside joke going on in my head. My friend's couldn't get with me at first because I did ballet but listened to rock music and pretty much everything I liked was a stereotypical contradiction, so my answer to anybody who would say, "I just don't get you" would be "I'm a walking contradiction" Aaaah love it, reminds me of times past :)

You have put my thoughts into words!

About the Insomniac booklet - I appreciate the art but the way it's a foldout rather than a traditional booklet means I open it less often and consequently miss out a bit on some of the lyrics. This is a travesty as they are so good.

Ah, but it's so well worth unfolding. Each lyric gets individual treatment - look at how each line in 'No Pride' starts in bold, jittery white, and fades into a smaller font, split right down the middle. Look how in 'Panic Song', the word 'escape' spaces out until it falls over the edge. 'Stuck With Me' is all ghostly muttering - Geek Stink Breath has 'thick white line' stand out like a right-click highlight. Everything is uneven and jumpy - the title of '86' puddles like a fingerprint from a nightmare ; the whole thing is a mindscape of darkness, where the words shout and retreat, contradiction being that for a place where nothing's black and white, it's all portrayed in black and white. It looks someplaces like it's scraped out by a raven's talons, others by a demon hunched over an oldschool typewriter, rattling away.

It's the perfect flipside for Winston Smith's piece, a match made in hell. My copy escaped the cd case, and never went back ; it has a hole burned thru it from this one time when I had it laid up next to a candle. Pretty fitting - I burned into it, and it burned into me.

I just watched the Letterman video on GDA. That sort of swoosh of the head and eyes that Billie Joe does at 00:57 is hilarious

Because I like SOTW threads so much I keep on saving up reading/posting in them until after I've read the other threads I wanna read, and then end up not having enough time to read/think about it properly so I wait another day. I need to stop doing this

Well anyway, this is my favourite Insomniac song. Funny because somehow it seems different to the rest of the album, less dark and angry and introverted, and I really love those things about the album. But this song is just plain fantastic and one of my all time favourite Green Day songs :D. Totally agree about the word play! I'm such a huge fan of clever word play and pretty much every line of this song is brilliant, I can't think of another song that I enjoy the lyrics of more. My wallet's fat and so is my head - LOVE IT! The music is just right too, propelling the lyrics along at a steady pace. Amazing amazing song!

The video is great. I always find watching them do the stunts hilarious because Billie's so cool about it calmly strolling though traffic inches from death, Tre looks terrified the whole time and is power walking away from the danger, and meanwhile Mike does NOTHING remotely dangerous in the whole video. The most dangerous thing he does is push a button. I also enjoy seeing Billie's stripey brown t shirt making it's 3rd appearance in a Green Day video , wonder if that was deliberate or if he actually just wore it that much.

So it's not just me who thinks Tre is doing a super power walk

and yeah, lame, Mike! He's the manliest of them all and he takes no risks. LAME!

Hahaha I'm glad someone else has noticed! And indeed! His rather fantasic outfit does somewhat make up for the lack of stunts though.

I don't care what anyone says. The man is a poet:

Rehab rejects still sniffing glue

Constant refutation with myself

I'm a victim of a catch 22

I love it. It's just SO good.
