Words I Might Have Ate

Oh, I love this song! But I must admit that I prefer the acoustic version... Billie played it at Montréal in 2009 and I always think about this show when I hear it.

I like the guitar intro and the way that BJ says "Why?". My favorite lines are "Was it bad enough to be too late? / Just tell me the words I might have ate". ;)

Probably not quite the same as Billie in this song though. I think that's unique :D

Just gonna post my favourite video of this. All three of them singing. Ahem :whistle:wub:

Agh, that is awesome. I've never seen a video of mike/billie/tre all harmonizing like that before, if only the quality wasnt so jumpy...

But this is definitely one of my favorite songs on Kerplunk. It seems like this was just a fast, electric song with harmonies (like Dry Ice), but they just decided to make it acoustic. But I'm glad they did, cuz it definitely makes it stick out for me.

I'd love to see a properly-done performance of this song live... Like Billie on acoustic, and the rest of the band playing it like on the album. They never seem to do the album arrangement live.

I have absolutely no reason to dislike this song; in fact, on paper, or, like, when reading the description of the song in this thread, I should like it. But something about it irks me. Maybe it's just that I don't like the Kerplunk recording, idk.

This was the first old song I heard! Since it's 7 years since American Idiot was released, I guess I've been a fan for 7 years. And I got so hooked so fast I downloaded all the songs I got my hands on xD And the Words I Might have Ate live (from slappy hours re-realese) was the song I fell in love with. I couldn't BELIEVE how old Green Day was xD They made music before I was born xD ('91)

The song is awesome, it's still one of my favorite GD songs, it's cozy and romantic, and you can recognize the feeling of the song. You got something good, you get to used to it and end up losing it, like in that song by the lady with the nice voice who's name I can't remember xD (Big Yellow Taxi and Chelsey Morning lady :P)

I feel the same. There's nothing at all wrong with the song. I seem to have a hard time getting into it for some reason.

1,800th post!

I absolutely love this song. Favorite part of the lyrics:

"But now it's gone and I take the blame

So there's nothing I can do but take the pain

Why?"

Wonderful

I especially love this performance from the WFMU Sessions (1992).

It's been posted on GDA before, and Billie's guitar string broke right before this, so this turned out to be a version just with Mike's bass and Billie's and Mike's vocals... I love it! Their voices are in such harmony!

Was it bad enough to be too late?

Just tell me the words I might have ate...

I love the lyrics so much.

And I absolutely adore this whole song, it's one of the very special ones to me. And the way he connected it with Redundant was just

Once again, you summed it up perfectly in the OP.

This is honestly one of my favourite videos of all time

I love the scream when Billie starts the song =D

Ooh, it wasn't love at first sight (or better...at first listening?? ) with this song, I have to admit...but like happened with a couple other songs off of Kerplunk, after a while I realized how much it has to tell, and I fell in love with lyrics and music.

First of all, just the title is so amazing and special...Words I Might Have Ate, it's a figure of speech, yep! like "she, she screams in silence..."...these are the strokes of genius that amazes me everytime, in a few, chosen words Billie hides a whole idea or feeling or situation...that's what makes him a brilliant songwriter!

Then the music , as everyone already said, is a contrast with the sad happening, a girl leaving him...but he's telling the story with the typical lightness and light-heartedness of adolescence, one day a girl leaves me and it's like the world is falling apart around me, the next day I'll meet another girl and I'll fell in love with her...

I don't know but this musical atmosphere reminds me of some of the Beatles songs...I like it

And all those whys are very effective, they sounds like "whine"...and isn't he whining because he can't turning back to what what he has lost? "So there's nothing I can do but take the pain"....

Brilliant :)

Nah I think she was later on. He's kind of listed off all the songs about her before and they're all from Dookie or later. Must be another girl.

Dookie or later? Wasn't he with Adrienne by then? #confused.

^ Perfect, thanks! Question answered.

He and Adrienne met on Green Day's first tour in 1990 and they started an on/off long distance relationship, but eventually they both started seeing other people. He's said he was with the Ecuador girl for about a year, while he was writing Dookie, so I guess that was in 1993. Then in 1994 he and Adrienne decided to get back together so she moved to California and they ended up getting married soon after. Hope that helps!

Ah, I did not know that. I knew she was engaged to some other dude. But I thought that they had it together for at least a couple of years before they got married.... coolio.

Haha this just reminds me of when I saw GD in Mainz and Billie Joe came out for the second encore.

Me: "Is this what I think it is???"

Melanie: "Yeah!!"

Me: "Words I Might Have Ate!!!"

Melanie: ".......eh, no it's Pulling Teeth."

good times.

I've always had a really hard time liking this song. I don't know why. I thought it sounded extremely cheesy I suppose with the "mm-why."

But lately I've actually learned to fully understand the song because I'm relating to it a bit. Selfish? Maybe a little, but this song has gone from "Yeah, this is probably the only Green Day song I don't like" to "Okay, I get it. I like it." lol

This is probably one of my favorite songs off Kerplunk. I love how it sounds so different to the rest of the album, so easy and uncomplicated. This song also really relaxes me when I listen to it. Just love it

The guitar in this song always reminded me of a creeper. That's what I remember most about this song. the guitar never gets really loud and stops and starts kind of awkwardly. the riff itself just sounds like someone scurrying around.

Lyrically, this song is so me right now. It's about a chance you didn't take, and a mistake you couldn't make. You only do those things because prior to now it's all just ended badly when you have. So you'd rather not eat your words...but then you eat nothing. Starvation is bad, kids.

I love this song. One of my favorites on Kerplunk. It sounds so simple, yet it's awesome. The lyrics are quite powerful, even the word "why", well, especially that word. I don't know what it is, but just the way Billie sings that word.. It says a lot, he sings it with emotion. I guess that's a way to say it. Also, I love the harmonies.. Using my earphones when listening to Words I might have ate.. so great.
