Bastard of 1967
THAT SONG is what depression feels like. Somebody finally figured out how to explain it and personify it and make it real for other people to understand. Thanks Guys. (I always knew that there were GD songs that had a slant of depression/anxiety to them, and they were therapeutic for me, but this one is just the pinnacle of that. Whatever Billie went through emotionally to bring him to write this song, i can not imagine. I do not wish that kind of pain on anyone. But i am sorry and it is good to know that other people feel the same pain that i do, even if that doesn't make the pain go away.) That's what Green Day's best music is all about -- showing you that someone knows what you feel like and that it's OK. That thought -- that realization -- alone is therapeutic. Your post stirs up so many thoughts and reminders of my own journey that led me to find the band. I'll write about it later, but I'm in a training lab right now so it's going to have to wait til break or later this week. But for now....thank you for sharing. Undómiel
I love this song so much. It just has such a grand and epic feeling to it that I've not found in many other songs. I also love the musical arrangement of the song; when you get the "City of the Dead" lines at the end of it, so epic. This song is definitely one that has to be listened to at extremely high volume, just so your heart beat changes to the timing of the drum... Hermione
This song is so beautiful. The first time I listened to American Idiot this was probably the song that hooked me into loving Green Day the most. Can't really put my finger on what it is but just the whole way the music and melody sounds is incredibly powerful and darkly beautiful and I love it. And the lyrics so emotional and bleak. One thing I love in particular is the transistion between Holiday and Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. The opening guitar of BODB starts as the last long note of Holiday fades out, and when the note finishes that opening guitar suddenly sounds crystal clear on it's own for a moment before the rest of the instruments kick in. That moment sounds beautiful, I used to always keep rewinding that bit. LOVE how they played this live on the 21st CB tour, swtiching it up by playing it acoustic and letting the audience sing a verse. Such a wonderful part of the show . I also like how Billie sings the last "My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating" differently live, going lower on the "beating". I always think he must wish he'd done that on the studio version haha, and at both show we went to when he did it my sister and I had to look at each other and grin
JDookie
Oh weeeell, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, here we are. Strange relationship with this song. Firstly, even though understanding its greatness, I wasn't so in love with it, just cause it was so much heard and I'm used to prefer songs less popular, but... Lately this song has really grown up to me because it is really describing my own feelings right now. I've achieved the counsciousness of my solitude, but I don't care. This road is the only one I've ever known, it's HOME to me (lyrics that are hidden in a verse but that have got such a great power to a person who's feeling this, I assure it), at maximum sometimes I wish to be find or to find someone to walk with me, but it's not important, I hold on and I walk alone. The only thing I need is Billie Joe's voice screaming "we are alive" right in my ears and I can stand this solitude. And I can smile, even walking alone. gmcloughlin
This song is the reason I fell in love with, and pledged my allegiance to Green Day. I don't even know why I love it as much as I do I think Holiday is part of it. That transition between the two songs and the opening of BOBD tell you something epic is coming. Its one of my fav moments in the live show.
Viva_La_Revolution!
For the longest time this was my all time favorite song, and I felt like it was the first song I could relate to, becuase i was feeling very alone when i first got into it. It's still up there in my favorite songs and still means so much to me, its an amazing powerful song. also, the lyrics were (are) so amazing, i was shocked something so deep could come from a four minute song. Skullz Rox
Before i first heard this song i thought being diffrent was a bad thing. I was listening to my radio and this song came on. I turned it up when i realized it was a Green Day song and began to listen. That song really changed my life and made me realized that it didn't matter if i was diffrent than everyone else and that it didn't matter if everyone didn't like me. As long as i liked myself everything was ok. I have this song playing every time i walk to and from school. It always makes my day go better. Dylan.
I would quite like some song suggestions to mull over for next week, y'all You should do "Deadbeat Holiday". I have been rocking that motherfucker ALL day. Furthermore, Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the song that really landed Green Day back in the spot light again. Let's be honest, it is the most "pop" song on American Idiot, except for possibly WMUWSE. From the very beginning of the song, it screams of a bleeding agony. The vocals are bleak and dark, but without sounding pathetic. Rather, they radiate a kind of quiet, mourning for what Billie seems to have lost. The song is about being loneliness. The song is about feeling as though the weight of the world is just too much. More importantly, this song is about the simple serenity found in walking along a beaten path a million and one fucking times.
bjrules
Even though this song was/is extremely overplayed, I find that its a song that I just can't get sick of. This was one of the songs, along with American Idiot and Holiday, that first got me into Green Day. Everytime I hear this song I smile to myself and think back to when I was a 9 year old kid, listening to this song over and over and singing it as loud as I possibly could in my bedroom. I also remember back to the days when this song was all over the TV, and I used to watch Video Hits in the mornings and see this song come on and completely freak out because I was so happy. I used to sit in fornt of the TV, just completely fascinated by the music video and how amazing it was. The music fits so well with the words, just the bleak tone of the music perfectly fits the whole hangover theme of this song. Words just can't describe how much this song means to me, just because of the fact that it was one of the main songs that made me fall in love with Green Day. Brian
This song is what started the transformation of my life/personality. The week this cd came out, I listened to it non-stop. Early in the morning when I got to school, I would put my headphones on and roam the empty halls, and reflect on the music. This song in particular struck a heart string with me because of the sincerity in Billie's voice just hit me so hard. "I walk alone." I was a loner the first two years of high school. So i consider this my "omg nobody likes me waaaah" song. But then in like 2006, Buffalo got hit by a horrible snow storm that hit the area destroying numerous trees and knocking down power lines. I remember 4 days after the storm, driving down the streets looking at all the mangled trees, and how deserted the area seemed to be, this song came on, and again it added a new meaning to the song for me. Yeah.
Red Lights Flash
Boulevard of Broken Dreams is a masterpiece. It's not just another song, but it really describes a feeling. Notice how all of the instruments really accentuate that rhythm of walking alone. Throw in the simple but effective lyrics. The solo and ending really lead up to this feeling of a mental breakdown. This song is really an experience.
melissawebster
I don't know if you've already done "Blood, Sex & Booze," but after such a poignant and depressing song, something fun and funny that celebrates absolute indulgence would be good. It's been on my mind all week because we were talking about it on another thread, and I think it would be interesting to hear other people's take on it. Karen.
This song is so me. The lyrics and theme. A nice choice for the AI anniversary. I love it. So much so that it pains me to hear people complain about it. Don't hate the song for being so great! It's not 2005/6 and hasn't been for a long time, so can we please let the overplayed thing go? Sometimes something is so good that it deserves to be shared with the infidels to let them know what they're missing! My friend that bought the tickets to my first GD show (which converted me instantly), got them just to hear this song, so I am thankful for that. I wasn't really aware of GD before AI (I had only a passing interest in random music) so I judged the song on its merits and not what a GD song should sound like. All I knew then and still believe now is that it's spectacular!
melissawebster
Sometimes something is so good that it deserves to be shared with the infidels to let them know what they're missing! Ha ha! Okay, you're right. Musically, it's an awesome song, and it converted a lot of people. I will give it that. Personally, I don't love the song, but I swear an oath from this day forth to no longer hate it.

¿Lily!
Before I heard this song, I was only a casual Green Day fan. Then this song came about and converted me into a truly dedicated fan. This song is simple yet so poignant because it touches on such a deep theme. I will always be grateful for this song because it changed my life in many ways. angry_robot
Probably the same feeling as many of you guys have, this song really brought me into Green Day, and I still love it. Its like there're always some good and bad times in your life, and when suddenly you realize that your dreams, your hopes are gone (because shit happens, you know), its like being on this Boulevard of Broken Dreams again. Guess many of us have such situations and thats why this song will always be in our hearts

San Miguel
this song is very me, so it's one of my favourites. tried learning it on the acoustic guitar but i suck! can't do a B chord without stopping! and typical of Green Day, whilst the song is sullen and sad they include a vulture called Ethel to make you smile!
