greendaytone
Great OP as ever, it was quite emotional just to read. It is maybe Green Day's saddest song, but still has that uncanny ability to be an upbeat sounding song.
Bastard of 1967
This week’s Song of the Week is J.A.R. It's rare that I find myself with nothing to add beyond what's in the OP. This is one of those rare cases. Great, great discussion about a song that is also one of my all-time favorites from the back catalog. It was just phenomenal seeing it live at Verizon Center on the 2009 summer tour leg. Edit: OK, I thought of one thing to add: the guitar bridge is fucking killer. One of the best of everything in Green Day's catalog.
Lena549
Yes yes yes yes yes yes! Ahhhh FINALLY!! Gosh, J.A.R. is my favorite Green Day song and can't put into words how much I love it. It's also my favorite to play on the guitar. Every time I hear it, I need to prevent myself from getting too sentimental I'm sure I'd burst into tears if I'd hear it live at a show -> Love it! Guest
I love this song almost as much as I love the man who wrote it. Seeing it live for the first time in 2009 was such a thrill.
Whatsername1911
I remember when I first heard this song, and I literally listened to it for a week straight non-stop. It's so powerful and perfect. And then they put the live version they played in Detroit on AAF

Laura!
This song has always been special to me so of course I was ecstatic that they played this in Detroit. Then it made it onto AAF, which made me even happier. "What's in your heart Michigan?!"

*withoutadoubt*
I've always listened to this song as it played - probably heard it about a million times - but I really never heard it til just recently. It was like hearing it for the first time, and it blew me away. Like I finally fully comprehended the message I was supposed to get from the beginning. I remember realizing it at the time and tweeting about it, lol. It's one of my favorites now. I love the chorus, and I think it sums up the song pretty well: "And I think that it's all right, That I do what I like, 'Cause that's the way I want to live. it's how I give, and I'm still givin'..." This song could've easily been titled "Carpe Diem."
JDookie
I won't hide this: when I try to decide which of Green Day songs is their best (mission impossible, in my opinion) this is the song that I would probably choose. Musically, it's really amazing, especially for me 'cause I love Insomniac era sound; yet its lyrics are really some of the best I've ever read. This song is to me like a modern Carpe Diem, an invitation to live our life enjoying every moment and giving each moment the importance it deserves. I love how the song shows the developement of Mike's thoughts, starting from the feelings that come up after Jason's death till the wonderful final sentence: "while I'm young and while I'm able all I wanna do is". This is genial to me, the incomplitness of the phrase let a felling of mistery and lets you complete the sentence in the way you want. I have to stop myself cause a lot of people need this pc but I'd like to write more and better (what I wrote is terrible I know)
Brigister
Mhmh, such a good song! I love when in AAF version, you can hear Tre' saying "suck big tits!"

That was great (and I ALWAYS love it when somebody gets into the music and the lyrics more than just skin-deep in these threads, that's what they're here for). The thing that always grabs me about J.A.R. is not just that it contains the strong "carpe diem" message -- it's that this message is in very dramatic tension with an equally strong message about responsibility. In between is both conflict and balance: "Gotta make a plan, gotta do what's right . . . but I don't want to make a plan for a day far away". It's documenting a maturation process that I suppose Jason's sudden death pushed to the forefront of Mike's mind. Usually when Mike writes, it's something simple and occasionally goofy like "Ha Ha You're Dead" or the "Nobody Likes You" part of Homecoming. But not this one....it's very deep and very, very serious, more like what you'd expect Billie to write rather than Mike. And to that extent I'd say that, of the songs that Green Day has chosen to share with us, it's the best song Mike's ever written.

I just used to sorta dismiss this song for some reason, and it was a pleasant surprise when I really listened.
ScatteredPictures
Awesome. This song got way too little attention in my almost 9 months of being a Green Day fan. I only recently got into it. End is the best of course.
Disapperingirl
Awesome song, for its lyrics AND for the music ( that bassline... ) I always found interesting how the death of a frriend brought to that kind of lyrics...I never lost someone close to me, but that happened to a friend of mine last year, and her reaction was "why that had to happened to him? Why young people have to die?? Why God wanted that?? But does God really exist??" This song suggests another reaction focused of yourself, you that are still alive...sounds a bit selfish in this way... but the lyrics are sage, that happened to my friend, now let's learn from that, and think before act... Very clever and touching song, amazing live..."What's in your heart, Michigaaan!!" - AAF
