AND SCREAMING! :woot:

Lovely song. Anyone who was fortunate enough to seeing AI on Broadway will know that the adaption of this song is a pleasure to watch/listen to.

But yeah.. "Skyscrapers... stargazers in my head"

This song has great lyrics. One of Billie's finest. Then again every song he writes has great lyrics.... but I digress. :P

What I love about this song is the way the opening lyric paints such a vivid visual in my mind. "Starry nights, city lights coming down over me," more than any other moment on the album (which is saying a lot), puts me in the mindset of the characters and their struggles. It's a simple line, almost a little cliche, but when you combine the drums and the crowd-like chorus, it just becomes a captivating song.

"Rage and Love, the story of my life, the Jesus of Suburbia is a lie"

I love this song! one of my favorites :) it´s great when GD are playing it live and when it leads to St. Jimmy, the crowd goes from "silent" to loud and that´s a great feeling  (that´s how I think)

btw: I would like to be the girl in the video :P:wub:

I looove this song! One of the best from AI. My fave lyrics are:

"Starry nights city lights,

Coming down over me"

It was amazing hearing it live...and i love how St Jimmy starts straight after :D

I don't know what it is that I adore about this song so much. When I first heard it I didn't think much of it particularly but the more I've listened to it, the more I've come to love it so much. When that first verse just hits you, there's just something so special about this song. I think hearing it live has cemented in my mind how incredible it is.

This is the only song whose lyrics I have seriously considered getting tattooed, something I have been talking about for a few years now and the idea in my mind is still there and still strong, so I guess I'm definitely doing it. There's just something so intense about this song. It's magical. :D

And also the way it segues into St Jimmy is like a kick to the head. You get completely comfortable listening to the soaring harmonies of AWTW and then BAM. Love it.

This has always been one of my favorites from AI.

I get this special calm-like feeling everytime I listen to it...

This song was one of the last songs I fell in love with on the album for some strange reason, but once I did it quickly became one of my favorites. On a small side note, it's up there with Macy's Day Parade for me because it seems to have a similar theme. It's about a time of your life when you're questioning who you are, what you stand for, what you truly believe in, and where you're going in life. What's worth it if you don't even know what you're fighting for? Is there even a consolation prize involved; that sort of idea. Anyways, this song to me has always been the "hangover" song in the sense where our Jesus of Suburbia goes out and does exactly what he wants (See: Holiday), realizes he's alone (Boulevard of Broken Dreams), and then begins to question everything he has done. And at this point there's really no turning back; he left his home, what was left of his family, everything...all for this life. And what is this life? Where is it going? We're all just hopelessly waiting for something miraculous to happen in our lives, and for what?

Man, this thread has come at the right time for me as it seems like I'm having a relapse in my depression, so this album's definitely going on my headphones tonight...

It's an amazing song and I always enjoy to hear it live.

Billie Joe bringing fans up on stage is just stunning.

So seeing the video was great as well.. :)

A few people were asking what Billie was doing with the girl's phone in the video I posted - he was trying to take photos for her, but he couldn't get it off the menu screen. He was holding it at arm's length, randomly poking at different things on the screen

Such a noob, it was hilarious.

I actually hate this song. Skip it every time I listen to American Idiot.

I can just imagine that girl talking to her friends the next day.

"So, what did you do last night?"

"Oh, I carried Billie Joe Armstrong across a stage and hugged him. Then he got me to sing a song while he stole my mobile phone and tried to take a picture of himself. Oh yeah, then he kissed me."

But back to the song. There are some songs where I love the live version so much more than the studio version. Like Minority. And this song is another example. I've never actually seen Green Day live ( ) but when I do this song will probably be the most emotional one for me. Just something about everyone singing along together and swinging their arms above their heads to the music always gets to me.

The BIAB version of this song gets me every time. It's just such a calming song. It's brilliant. :)

I sent a letter to warner bros. for Green Day and a homemade b-day card to BJ. This song gives me hope that one day I will get something back from them and that Green Day does care even if I am just another fan. This song keeps me holding on to life when I am ready to leave it.

Sometimes I want to fall asleep and I'll listen to this. Then I'll remember in the last few seconds of the song that I forgot to put my iPod on shuffle and St.Jimmy'll come on, scaring the shit out of me and making my chances of falling asleep decrease by 100%. :P

The video is SO awesome, I had to watch it 5 times! Lucky girl! :-)

AWTW wasn't one of my favourites when I first heard the American Idiot album, but like many of you, after seeing it live the song grew on me. I especially love the BIAB version. My favourite part is "The rage and love, the story of my life. The Jesus of Suburbia is a lie" - it gives me goosebumps every time. I also love how the song goes into St Jimmy.

My friend Lili got pulled up on stage during Are We the Waiting @ Lollapalooza 2010 and was basically raping Billie Joe. She was having too much fun, and you can tell from the video.

Trust me though, if anyone in the crowd deserved to be pulled up on stage for that song, it was her. (Even though it was her second time getting pulled on stage with Green Day.) She had a very special moment with Billie and she was crying for quite some time afterwards.

I love the verses of this song. The music and the imagery of the lyrics together is so beautiful. "Starry nights, city lights coming down over me" or "This dirty town is burning down in my dreams" along with that really beautiful guitar sound and the clear drums, I just love it.

Not a huge fan of the chorus/"Are we we are, are we we are the waiting" part though, the idea of someone repeatedly calling out that question in confusion fits perfectly with the song but I just don't really enjoy how it sounds. Too stadium-y or something. But it does work with the song and works REALLY well live when the whole crowd's singing along to it. I love how Billie gets really close to the audience during it too, leaning down and singing to people and holding their hands and stuff, and pulling people on stage. Lovely part of the show.

So sweet! Glad for your friend. And the video Aska posted is really funny and sweet too. I always enjoy seeing videos of people getting pulled up during this song, there's no specific thing they've been brought up to do so the possibilties are endless!

This one is hilarious
