i kind of feel that Gilman kind of reopened their arms to Green Day to some extent. That concert in 2001 shows that. The Gilman 'x'list in the OP (which i hadn't seen before) seems to make Billie the scapegoat at the time.

If you read Playtpus into it (and also add the other bits and pieces of Green Day's background story added by insiders like Marc Spitz, Aaron Cometbus, and Larry Livermore), it appears to me that the partial thaw didn't start until after the untimely demise of MaxR&R's Tim Yohannan, one of Gilman's co-founders and (it is widely felt) the direct target of Platypus' vitriol. There's a LOT of interpersonal angst wrapped up in 86, and I'd suggest that Platypus bookends it after Yohannan's death a few years later.

I thought it means "there's no return from 1986", well now I know what it refers to :) in fact there's a South American group called Karratapunk (which sings "spanish versions" of GD songs) which sings this song as it is talking about 1986, you should listen to them, they're quite good.

I agree, there seems to be no animosity with Gilman now but Billie still hates Yohannan even now. A few months ago he tweeted "Platypus was written for Tim Yohanon. And I prey to god I misspelled his name. Rest in shit you fucking cunt" (but deleted it soon after). I think he really was the main issue as far as Gilman goes.

I remember that little hissy-tweet...Adie must have convinced him to think the better of it.

I LOVE this song! It has meaning, many people can relate, and it's catchy as hell. Like Pasalaska, I didn't really love this song until I became familiar Green Day's background. Now, it is my second favorite song off of Insomniac. (Walking Contradiction is my first ^.^)

The name comes from the term "86ing" which in Gilman meant when you throw someone out of the club, you 86 them.

just a reminder to everyone, if you want a song to be Song Of The Week, you can nominate it (with a little reasoning) here

I absolutely love this song. At first I thought the song had something to do with the year, and I kept mixing it up with 80 (lol), so I didn't really know much about it other than the fact that it was real catchy. When I read about them being 86'd I suddenly viewed that song as really sad. It must have been really painful for them to be kicked out of there.

I also like the fact that if you forget the fact that the song is directed at Gilman, you can totally relate to the song when you've been kicked out of a circle of friends of whatever.

A prostitute? How...?

Also, I forgot to mention that I'm obsessed with not only this song, but the whole Insomniac album. Maybe because I'm full of teenage ~angst.

86 is one of my favorite Green Day songs EVER (note my username). I'm glad to see it as song of the week. :)

The first time I ever saw what Green Day looked like while performing was when they played this song on David Letterman in 1995. I recorded it on VHS and I still have it.
