American Eulogy

haha, good repost indeed. Fascinating, insightful stuff from both. I am leaning towards the idea that they are the same person. Scitzophrenia prevails in Billie Joe's lyrics and on (/off?) stage persona, which also lends itself towards this idea.

I'm honestly blown away by the depth you guys find in the music. I listen to the music on a much more superficial level than that, more about the sound to me. It's great to be able to understand the story more with insights like this.

I totally agree

These guys are fantastic, and I'm glad I'm able to read these interpretations, it makes me think about Green Day's music on a much higher level! Just wow.

Once again, thanks so much for sharing the interpretations with us.

I always have my little interpretations but I am never able to make complete sense out of them.

I don't really think there is a weak song in the album. I reckon they all just fit so well. I love the song but then I have listened to it so many times while I am walking to work. Its great song

Wow, I really enjoyed reading both interpretations. They made me think about the song (an album) on a whole new level. I can never find such in depth meanings so it is great to read and think about yours.

It's one of my favourite songs so I loved hearing it live in Birmingham :D

I'm so sorry guys. I can't explain why, but I think this song is a total mess. It's the song I keep skipping on the album. Wish I knew why. :x

This song does not have the consistant flow than the other long songs have, and it jumps around alot. It still is a good song, but its not my favorite.

Personally, I love this song.

One of my best friends thinks that American Eulogy and See The Light are the worst songs on the album, but I disagree. American Eulogy is so... different. It's like the JOS/Homecoming of the album, but not as good (though, still pretty kick ass).

I love the "There's a disturbance on the ocean side..." part. There's an amazing thing there, though I can't really name it. It's just really amazing.

It's this clear voice coming from the outside - it's reading the signs.

Holy shit.

You win.

Let me share this with you and Angeline, 'k? Your writeups are equally valid and very, very well laid out. Please don't sell yourself short!!

Edit: Oh, yeah, and it goes without saying that all the real credit needs to go to one Mr. Billie Joe Armstrong, who wrote this beast. All we're really doing here is trying to figure out from his lyrics what's really going on in that crazy mixed-up head of his. One of my biggest fears is that one day he'll actually READ one of our interps and wonder what kind of crack we've been smoking around here. :pinch:

...and "Mayday, this is not a test, as your neighborhood burns". Remember the song back in the late 90's by Smashmouth, "Walking on the Sun"? There was a similar verse there that Eulogy either evokes or maybe even calls back to:

It ain't no joke when a mama's handkerchief is soaked

With her tears because her baby's life has been revoked

The bond is broke up so choke up and focus on the close up

Mr. Wizard can't perform no godlike hocus-pocus

So don't sit back kick back and watch the world get bushwhacked

News at 10:00 your neighborhood is under attack

Put away the crack before the crack puts you away

You need to be there when your baby's old enough to relate

Ever since, well, ever, brilliant artists and musicians have been telling us to wake the fuck up already and DO something to change the world. I wonder if we'll ever listen (and when I ask that I'm pointing my finger at myself too....)

I wanna hear more of this type on their next record.

I never expected to see pre-sellout Smash Mouth (or any Smash Mouth, for that matter) compared to Green Day. In fairness, though, "wake the fuck up" is a message that musicians have been sending for decades now.

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. :eyebrows:

This song's got a lot of kick. It's pretty perfect. The Homecoming to 21st Century Breakdown.

Mayday this is not a test! as the neighbourhood burns.

Totally

I really love this song. It's one that gives me that feeling of energy and crazyness, so I end up running around screaming it at recess. But it's SO good, in the top 5 on 21CB. Why so much hate to it?

yes! The live version is fucking beautiful. Before the 'Modern World' part, Billie screams 'Mike Dirnt! Mike Dirnt!!'

I don't even know what I could possibly say about this song after those two magnificent essays.

Everything I wanted to say has been said, and so many things I never even thought of were brought up.

I am honestly left silent

The song's a masterpiece. *points to your posts and runs away*

good vocal from mike but live he is sounding less strong in his solo bits. give tre more of a sing-song!

I love this sing, definitely since the first time I heard it off the album the first time. But when I heard it live at the Phoenix show last august, I didn't realize how awesome the music and lyrics were until then.

(and it doesn't hurt that Billie tweeted about it  )

I love this song although, embarrassingly, it took me a very long time to realise Mike sings on it.

This is my favorite song from 21stCB - I adore the 'Modern World' part where Mike is singing!

I've always wondered why American Eulogy and Murder City weren't chosen to be singles ;_;

Ah so much to this song. I don't need to explain why it's so awesome. Obviously most people in this thread feels the same.

Anyway, I think my favorite part is when BJ says, "Calling Christian and GLORIA!" So powerful.

Also, I really like that Mike sings on this one. Mike should sing more prominently in more songs. His voice is soothing in a way.
