By John Moore

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was in Denver on Friday to attend the opening performance of the final tour stop for the Tony-winning Broadway musical American Idiot. The show has been touring for three years.

Armstrong was joined by director Michael Mayer and Green Day drummer Tré Cool, among other luminaries. Mayer not only directed American Idiot but the original Spring Awakening, for which he won his first Tony Award. He is nominated again for directing this year’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

After Friday’s performance, the bigwigs took turns thanking the cast and crew, and wishing them well as they disband after Sunday’s closing in Denver.

"I think there is something about being a part of what happens on that stage," Armstrong told them at a post-show party held at Pizza Republica. "It’s very emotional. There’s never a dry eye in the house - and by that I mean the house in my skull."

American Idiot is based on Green Day’s groundbreaking rock opera of the same name. Armstrong not only wrote all the lyrics, for a time he played the role of St. Jimmy in the Broadway production of American Idiot. His nephew, Andrew Humann, is an ensemble member in the national touring production now here in Denver.

"You can see the chemistry that happens between everybody," Armstrong continued. "You can feel it. And this cast: You looked like a bunch of friends. And that what was so beautiful about it. That’s the kind of chemistry this show needs. So, thank you."

Shenandoah Conservatory to Present AMERICAN IDIOT, Opening 9/26

Fans of the hit Green Day musical American Idiot will be happy to hear that after the national tour closed in May, plans were put into motion to bring the rock show to the college level-apropos to its age demographic and subject matter. Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, known for its dedication to pop/rock voice training will be the first school to premiere the work on the non-professional level. According to Musical Theatre International's website, it is currently the only licensed production of the show.

Musical Theatre Program Coordinator Jonathan Flom has been working with Stephen Gabriel from Work Light Productions (The producers of the National Tour of Idiot) on getting the show to Shenandoah for the last two years. Once the tour closed officially, Shenandoah was granted the license.

The show has its gala premiere opening on Friday, September 26 at 8pm and runs Sept. 27 at 8pm, Sept. 28 at 7pm, and October 2-4 at 8pm in the Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre of Shenandoah University, 1460 University Drive, Winchester, VA 22601. For tickets, contact www.conservatoryperforms.org or (540) 665-4569.

The production will be directed by Flom and choreographed by Tiffanie Carson (A Christopher K. Morgan & Company dancer). Musical direction will be in the hands of Thomas Albert with vocal supervision by Matthew Edwards. Scenic design is by Bill Pierson, Costume design by Tanner Pippert, Lighting design by Mac Bozman and Chris Mudie, and Sound design by Golder O'Neill. Projection design is by Jonathan Flom and Alec Sparks.

Shadowbox snags ‘American Idiot’

Shadowbox Live has snapped up the rights to become the first central Ohio troupe to produce American Idiot, the Green Day rock musical.

The company will present the show from Feb. 12 to April 26 in its Brewery District space, 503 S. Front St.

The musical, about three working-class guys struggling with life in post-9/11 America, was adapted from the 2004 album by Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day, and author-director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening).

It includes songs from the Green Day album 21st Century Breakdown, too.

Two years ago, a touring production of American Idiot played the Palace Theatre in Columbus.
