euphoric-pareidolias
Firstly, thank you again for finally choosing this song. Secondly apologies for a long post that most of you will prob just skip... i love this song and it has helped me through so much, esp last year when a lot of shit happened in my life and i couldnt talk to my friends as they didnt understand what was happening and this song helped me through a lot of that. i have a few reasons why i wanted this song to be SotW. one of them being is i think its the one song that accurately describes teenage life and all the problems that teenagers go through that many other people do not see or understand. the beginning of the song describes how the "jesus of suburbia" sees himself as an outsider of life and the community and how he doesnt fit in but then "But there's nothing wrong with me, This is how I'm supposed to be, In a land of make believe, That don't believe in me" shows how he accepts himself and doesnt see the need to change who he is or what he believes in just to be accepted into society. i think most teenagers at some point, or at least i have, have felt that they don't belong and are different to everyone else and are looked down upon by people as someone who doesnt matter or have any purpose but we need to realise that we are all people and unique and we should all be accepted into the world by society no matter our differences or beliefs and do not need to change to suit those around. "home is where your heart is, But what a shame, 'Cause everyone's heart, Doesn't beat the same, We're beating out of time" these are my all time favourite lyrics of green day. it describes how to general public, people say home is where the heart is as a saying but then its contradicted by the comment of nobody's heart is the same and so home is different to everyone as everyone is different, everyone is individual and therefore where each person's heart lies is a unique and sacred place to them and to them alone. my home may be the place where im most comfortable but due to different circumstances, it can feel more like a prison than a home at times and there can be no escape from it without me being questioned about everything. the fact that everyone's heart beats differently proves the point that there shouldnt be so much stereotyping in modern society and it should be accepted that everyone belongs despite any reasons of why they would be thought for not belonging, ie race, beliefs, how they dress, talk, music etc "Everyone Is So Full Of Shit! Born and raised by hypocrites, Hearts recycled but never saved, From the cradle to the grave" yet again, these lines also mean a lot to me I have a lot of problems with peoples attitude towards other people these days and really feel the world is corrupt and everything is to do with social status and class and quite often appearance. i think this shows how he realised how fake everyone really was and how most people truly are hypocrites when it comes down to something. they want to be seen as perfect and whatever but really they are hiding behind themselves and who they really are with their imperfections as all that matters is how the world sees them. everyone goes through heartbreak again and again but yet no one tried to save you from that from the moment your born til the moment you die. that may not be what it means but thats what i always comes to my mind when i hear that part.. in the last part, i think it shows how society can't bully everyone into conforming to their false ways and cant convince everyone who is true to themselves that they should change to suit everyone else. i strongly relate this to the way i feel about school; teachers etc promote you to be yourself but yet constantly put you into a stereotyped group and try to change the way you think and live to make you perfect instead of focusing on each persons strong points and trying to encourage them. "To live and not to breathe, Is to die in tragedy, To run, to run away, To find what you believe, And I leave behind, This hurricane of fucking lies, I lost my faith to this, This town that don't exist" It's like whatever you do, will please some but will always annoy/displease others and you can't ever make everyone happy. I, like many, know what i want to do with my life and have a dream etc and ever since i can remember, someone around me as put me down and said its stupid and that only men can do what i wanna do as a career and then i learned to keep my dreams and hopes to myself to avoid being hurt by people trying to change what i believed in and wanted to do. granted, i don't have it as hard as many do and one of my close friends doesnt get on with her family and wishes she could run away from the strict boundaries set by other people around her and feels she's living a lie just to continue until she can get away, and i think thats an example of this song in reality. I feel this song sums up how society sees teens and other people who may be slightly different, in appearance or personality and that at least, those of us who stick to what we believe in and stand up and don't conform to other people's wants, are the ones being true and honest to ourselves and to others, while the ones who try to conform us, are the ones that are living the lie. All in all "I don't feel any shame, I won't apologize"... we are who we are, i am who i am. Nobody should make anyone feel they should be sorry for who they are as it's the fact we are all different that makes the world keep going. (i will apologise for writing so much though sorry for it being so long, it just means a lot )
DecanoLP
Ahhh, I love reading these posts. Unfortunately, I have to say I prefer Homecoming over JoS. But of course, you can't deny Jesus Of Suburbia has one of the best lyrics ever. The way we get to know Jesus Of Subribia with all these hidden metaphors is incredible. I haven't seen anything better in the huge music world... The five parts are incredible, I have no words for them. It says: home is where your heart is, But what a shame, 'Cause everyone's heart, Doesn't beat the same, We're beating out of time
CzechIdiot
I dont know how to describe this song... Its amazing!!! I think it describes life of many people. Every word in it is so true. Many people go through hard things and their life are fucked up and they want a new start. This is a perfect song for them. Every time I listen to it I just want to do something with my life, run away and find people that understand me. There are no words for this song, its so hard to explain what it means to me. Favorite lyrics: I love it completely but the best in my opinion is I don't feel any shame, I won't apologize When there ain't nowhere you can go, Running away from pain, When you've been victimized, Tales from another broken home
Marki.
First off, let me say that I LOVE this thread and can't wait to read more responses and opinions about the song. I wrote a little bit of a rant about the video...it's kinda useless but I just wanted to share, because I noticed it's from Pinkpop! I wasn't at the show and (as far as I know) nothing really spectacular happened that night, but it is still one of the important performances of this song for me. The reason is - the show (or at least a part of it) was streamed live and I was trying to watch it, to catch at least a glimpse of the guys but it was not working very well... All I could hear were the screaming fans most of the time, I think I heard a little bit from the beginning (21st CB) and then it became just impossible to listen to, until JOS came on. I remember I could hear "I'm the son of rage and love...", but they just wouldn't show Green Day, they kept showing the stupid moderators or whoever was it. But that moment was still incredible, because it was LIVE and it was the FIRST freaking show of the tour... Then Billie started singing Dearly Beloved and that was probably the only moment I could really hear clearly, I think they even finally showed the stage. When I heard "Dearly beloved, are you listening" I seriously had tears in my eyes. I was like 'omg yes Billie I am listening is this really happening qmwfnakyvmyx :')))' I realized he's JUST singing this somewhere in the Netherlands, here in Europe, and that I'm going to experience it myself in a few weeks. It symbolizes the start of the tour, of the time when we shared many, many awesome memories with this song =) All I wanted to say was that Dearly Beloved from Pinkpop will always be one of my favourites. <
Kayfabe
The Jesus of Suburbia is so relatable. It's also the first song I learned on guitar. There's actually not so much sentiment in this one for me, which is surprising. But, the ending when it goes HOOOOME (you're leaving!) is just. gfofdgogjI have to say I prefer Homecoming over JoS. always.

Laura!
This is such an amazing song. Lately I've been listening to this song more than I ever have before, it's such an epic song in more ways than one. The lyrics, the drums, the guitars, the basslines, pretty much everything. One of the lines in this song is my all time favorite lyric: "It says home is where your heart is But what a shame Cause everyone's heart Doesn't beat the same It's beating out of time" I've always loved that lyric ever since I was a Green Day fan because it's so true. This is a song where I could listen to it over and over and not get tired of it. JOS is such a great live song too. You can tell that the guys LOVE to play this song live, you can see it on their faces when they do. I can't begin to express how I feel about this song in words, it's just

Undómiel
What can actually be said that does this song justice? My favourite section is Dearly Beloved or City of the Damned! luvgirlcl
Oh, god. There's so much that one could say about this song. Besides being EPIC, for me it's the most closest to be the perfect song: from the lyrics, to the sound, it's the perfect word and the perfect note and the perfect drumbeat in every single moment during the whole song. Everything just fits and flows perfectly. As for my fave part, even though I'm tempted to say Dearly Beloved, what did it for me the first time I heard it was "I'm the son of rage and love". And I can't prefer this over Homecoming or viceversa, for me they're different but equaly awesome each one.

justcause
Nine minutes or something? This is not about time, it's about dimension - every word a full 360-panorama, pivotting from a singular view, guitars pulsing and scything, turning over color - dull-fucking- not even the drama of monochrome, naw, just synthetic BEIGE, petro-chemical fabricated furnishings, guitars - that point in 'Tales' where little drops of blood spill red onto the colorlessness, drearily beloved, dutiful-beloved, disastrously beloved, let-go-of-me-beloved, I gotta be free of you, beloved, even if it seems to spit in the face of who you are, beloved, beloved - in the hands of some other band, this song coulda been a whole album, dwelling on each separate place at length, but this is a punk-ass song, intense, stripped-down, fast and propulsive, all of it the urgency to escape these emotional ties, the sentimental shit, to GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE. Mom, I love you, but this trailer has got to go. 'Tales from ANOTHER broken home' - such a weary, such a million stories but the title says otherwise. The title stands out epic and alone and defiant, like smouldering stone in an empty landscape. This is not an everyman story, however much its myriad images resonate with similarity - this is particular, spectacular, fucking NOTICE THIS because this is something to be fucking noticed.
