Katarina.
I love this song, and it's off of Nimrod, even better. Both lyrics and melody are great. It's great to sing along to, makes me kind of happy while the song is about feeling grouchy, lol. It's a pretty fast, catchy song, yeah, just great. I can relate to it well now, what a coincidence that it's sotw. Oh and J'net, it must be awful not being able to get out of your house. I hope the situation will change soon for you! sampy
The Grouch is really nice song! My favorite line is: "The wife's a nag and the kid's fucking up. I don't have sex `cause i can't get it up. I'm just a grouch sitting on the couch. The world owes me, so fuck you." That angry vibe in the lyrics in this song is cool. Hopefully they're going to play it live again at some point! I've always loved that video from the talk show. It's so funny. But yeah, really nice song
Lena549
It describes so well how grumpy old people are and i love the fact that he was in his 20s when he wrote it ;D favourite line: Life's a bitch and so am I, the world owes me so fuck you
ANJI
Absolutely amazing song. My favourite line is: "Life's a bitch and so am I The world owes me so fuck you" Everytime i look at the song title, for a second i think it says The Grinch..haha idek why
pasalaska
This was one of the first non-single GD songs that I really sat down and learned the lyrics to. I used to listen to it over and over, because the lyrics had such a novelty factor - they were like nothing I had heard before my early teenage self was entertained by the snotty obnoxiousness of it all I think
jake smith
wow i'm really supprised that this is song of the week, but i still love it. Nimrod is by far my favourite album and this is one of the best off of it.

ConfirmPassword
I looovwe that song Its the reason why I bought Nimrod at the begining, and it turned out to my farvorite album! The melody is so addicting, and I find it so childish compared to the lyrics. Thats one of the reasons why this song is so awesome Ohhh, thank you to choose this song!!! It's my favourite song from Nimrod!!! I like it SOOOO MUCH!!!!In spite of it's so full of self-criticism it's very funny!!! It makes me take all my problems easy and makes me smile and sing it loudly!!! (the world owes me so f**k you!) November's Storms
And the melody is just great, its so catchy to singalong too! Very similar to Basket Case in that way, when you hear Billie singing you automatically want to join in
ganis
I love the second video, I laugh out loud every time. Like pasalaska wrote, this was also one of the first non single Green Day songs that I fell in love wíth, and therefore learned the lyrics of.. The song is really catchy, so atleast I always want to sing along with Billie.. But for me it is also an awesome song to listen to when you're really pissed off.. Favourite lyric? "Life's a bitch and so am I"
euphoric-pareidolias
Firstly the music to this song is so catchy and Nimrod is one of my favourite albums so I love this song! I always saw this song as one that really showed the world that everyone is grumpy or in a bad mood at times and that people should shut up criticizing a person who is in a bad mood and just let them be. "Life's a bitch and so am i, the world owes me so fuck you," i think those lines are so accurate to daily life. whenever i'm in a bad mood or down and someone starts bothering me i always think of those lyrics cos life isn't fair and people have to deal with that and if im in a shit mood, the last thing i care about is what someone thinks of me at that time and usually it's none of their business how i feel so they should just keep their obnoxious opinions to themselves. plus i think it also sums up a moody teen quite well! DecanoLP
Great song. I love the 98 live versions with Big Yellow Taxi right before it. There was so much energy going on
Mr. Boron
Way too much anger in the lyrics...that's a good thing though, really fits in with the rough sound. Really good song.
jake smith
my friend called me today and told me that this is his new favourite song since i borrowed him Nimrod. I've finally got someone into Green Day without them saying they are emo!!!
November's Storms
plus i think it also sums up a moody teen quite well! Quite ironic as he wrote it about getting old
Bastard of 1967
I just listened to this song last night for the first time in a while. I always thought it was funny how billie made a song about him getting older and wasting his life, and now 14-years later he's running around, accomplishing crazy things, an having 5 times the energy of most people his age. Im glad he got out of that rut and got back to being amazing! I've heard elsewhere that The Grouch was Billie's way of expressing the fear and angst about what his life could become after he's too old to be punk anymore. All of us worry about the effects of aging from time to time and in one way or another -- the "holy fuck, I'm growing up, now what do I do??" -- and lemme tell you, it gets worse as time goes on, not better. And then parts of your body start to fail on you, but somehow you push on, you're still here, you still find some ways to enjoy yourself. And if you're Billie Joe, you go on a 2-year-long tour, countless awards shows, tweak the Broadway musical you helped write and then go back and ACT for two months in the damn thing, and start looking ahead to your next album. Oh yeah, and you don't sleep. So I wonder what bj thinks now, looking back on how he felt when he wrote The Grouch, and comparing it to where he's actually gone with his life, his career. I'll of course never be able to know with any degree of certainty, but looking at it from the outside it seems like he's having a hell of a lot more fun and being a hell of a lot more creative than he could have possibly imagined back then.....and (and this is the important life lesson for all of us) that the fear turned out to be far, far worse than the reality. deadair
It's aobut time. This is my favorite Green Day song of all time! The time they did this on Recovery TV, that has to be one of my favorite musical TV appearances along with Nirvana on Top Of The Pops
spark in the night
good song When I listen to the lyrics it's like I'm eavesdropping from the stairwell on an argument between Billie and Adie in the kitchen kinda cool in a fucked up way
clawhatsername
This song is a perfect example of Great Beat+Great Lyrics, when I first read the lyrics I couldn't stop listening to it for two whole weeks, seriously!! The fact that they have those amazing lyrics is one of the reasons why I really admire Green Day! The whole lyric is awesome, but favorite parts: "I drank a six pack of apathy" "Life's a bitch and so am I" "The world owes me so fuck you" "Wasted youth and a fistful of ideals" yeah......it's a really good song
