COMETBUS #54 Green Day In China?!

Zines are great! I got into them a few years ago and some of them have really changed my views on life in a positive way. I heard of Cometbus through Pinhead Gunpowder (his band with Billie Joe) and he writes 95% of their lyrics and they quickly became my favourite band (even over Green Day) and then I NEEDED his zines and novels haha. Basically in my opinion he is a punk genius. Reading his stuff always cheers me up even if he is writing about something miserable lol.

Oh my gosh I didn't realize he was in Pinhead Gunpowder! I've only heard one of their songs before though :ermm:

I was looking through this thread a couple weeks ago and read the entire thing. After reading this, I was massively interested in it. I remember seeing the picture with billie playing scrabble and was so curious where it was because scrabble is one of my favorite games. So I ordered this and got it within a couple days. I read it in about 2 hours. I just couldn't put it down. Aaron is quite an amazing writer. He has great descriptions and the imagery that he uses makes the reader feel like they were right in the middle of the action. It was a great backstage pass into the band, one that was quite personal. It was really interesting to read about them in a different way from someone who knew them. A lot of people have said that this made them like billie more and I definitely agree. The way he wrote about him, I could see what billie writes about in his lyrics, if that makes sense. But overall, it is a great read and I love Green Day so much.

Can anyone link me somewhere where I could buy this? I guess I officially live within the UK (Northern Ireland). I actually don't mind if I have to pay a considerably high posting payment or whatever.

I just ordered it from Microcosm Publishing last week. Not sure what shipping would be for you, but it was about $6 to eastern Canada.

I didn't find Aaron judgemental at all actually. He throws out quotes or tells us things the guys have done and then it's up to us to form our own opinions. Yes, he has his own views but we are entitled to ignore those. Tre saying hateful shit or behaving like a dick can be viewed by Aaron however he chooses and I choose to see it my way. I'm glad he at least wrote about it though because I can't imagine many other biographers would have the nerve.

I think being judgemental is part of his character, including being judgemental of himself more than anything, seems he holds himself to a high standard and at times others too although he admits that and tries not to overdo it (eg his "don't be difficult, don't be judgemental..." mantra at the beginning of this ). But yeah like you say he presents things honestly for us to make up our own minds about along with his own (again honest) views which we can disagree with if we choose, both things make him a great writer!

Yeah he actually formed the band and writes nearly every song :) He is the drummer. Jason White is a member also (he joined after the departure of Sarah Kirsch formerly Mike Kirsch) and Bill Schneider plays bass...oh and Billie obviously ;) You can check out a lot of their stuff on youtube if you haven't heard them yet. :)

I live in Ireland (Republic) and I ordered this issue from Microcosm (the link is above on this page) postage was about 14 (euro) so I decided to throw in a few other books & zines (I ordered about five) and postage was the same! They actually sent me a massive carboard box filled with zines and art and audio books for free! They were awesome. Over the years I've ordered from loads of different places and shipping is roughly the same because of the distance but some send you cute free stuff which is nice lol.

Larry Livermore recently tweeted this in response to someone asking about where to get Cometbus in the UK

but they seem to be out of stock of Cometbus 54 however :(

Aaron Cometbus and digital are two words that just don't go together in a sentence! For years his zines were handwritten and he uses his photocopier to distort images etc. Basically he is all about print. He always keeps his prices extremely low to make his work affordable so even if shipping costs are ridiculous his zine ends up cheaper than some glossy Green Day book in a popular bookstore in your local city where the author will have zero access to the band and re-tell their "history" with a zillion errors/factual inaccuracies for 200 pages.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Very true. E-Zines just wouldn't hold true to punk ethics.

don't know how often / if they restock, but they were the only UK / europe based people I could find with without paying crazy money

I need to re-read this! It's been like, 4 years!

I have 3 other Aaron Cometbus zines that I got in 2005; Chicago Stories, Double Duce, and Mixed Reviews. I need to re-read them all actually.

I really want Chicago Stories and Mixed Reviews. I have a load of his other stuff but haven't come across them (for a reasonable price) yet. Must look out for them.

Chicago Stories was the first zine I ever got. And it was actually given to me as a present from my brother's friend, because I got him a free ticket to see Bullet in a Bible in the cinema when it came out in November 2005

That's great! I'm assuming it's well worth getting then? Loved everything else of his I've read so I'm sure it is.

It sucks because there used to be a comic/record shop in Temple Bar in Dublin that sold Aaron's zines and that's where I got mine. I think it was called Connected Ink or something. But it closed a while ago so I guess I'd have to buy them online to get any other stuff of his :(

On ask.fm Larry Livermore was asked if he'd be there today and he said now you see me, now you don't.

Seriously? Why didn't I know about that when it was open?! Damn...could have saved so much money on shipping :( So many good shops are closed in Temple Bar it's depressing.

I still think my favourite Cometbus is Double Duce. I just adore it...not even sure how many times I've read that one. At this point I have an entire bookshelf for Aaron's zines lol. Despite Everything is great too because it's huge and a handy way to get your hands on some of the older work that's nigh impossible otherwise. I also think Last Supper was fantastic and incredibly brave!

I know, I was so sad when it closed. They sold so many amazing zines, Cometbus was just the tip of the iceberg

You've inspired me to start Double Duce again! :)

So frustrating to find out about a kick ass zine selling shop right in Dublin after it closes ugh. Why can't Tower Records be really cool for once and stock zines now that they've expanded lol. Aah dreams lol.

Anyway all this talk about Double Duce had me abandon my current Cometbus and restart it again haha. Geez it's so good though!

Oh and Happy Birthday to Aaron today, what a legend! :D

Anyone order from them before? How long do they take to send out orders?
