Yeah, I found that interesting, too. Even more interesting I found what he had to say about Billie kissing female fans onstage and his whole take on the sex symbol thing.

I could get into a fine argument with him over that. Overall, I never thought of Aaron as being so uptight and moralistic. When it comes to judging Prima Donna's backstage antics or Tré's rendez-vous with some or the other lady, he is just a little bit too harsh for my taste.

I agree. I think he misses the point with the kissing thing. He paints it as this seedy thing, where Billie "lets" desperate horny girls (who apparently ALL have boyfriends at the show with them ) kiss him, when it really isn't like that. In reality, Billie's as likely to initiate a kiss as a fan, and he's as (or more!) likely to kiss boys as he is girls. When he said "Is he just being friendly?", the answer is actually YES . No one's disrespecting Billie by kissing him, it's just a silly tradition that Billie himself started ages ago and nothing more.

I do think he probably got a different impression with it being in Asia, since Billie doesn't seem to grab and kiss boys in that part of the world, so he only would've seen girls kissing him. But still, he was being pretty uptight about something so harmless.

I think he wasn't impressed because he thought sex symbols should have a bit of mystery and a 'hard to get' vibe rather than letting people get so near. Almost like he's making it too easy. I know he's never exactly been George Clooney, but he must know he's desirable to (some) people in the audience.

It's funny because i've never seen the whole kissing on stage thing as sexual anyway ... it's more funny and awkward than anything else. What did Billie say again? That he thought it was like Bugs Bunny kissing Elmer Fudd? Something like that XD

My thoughts exactly , I see it the same way as you and I think Billie does too. When he says "sex symbols are supposed to...." that's where he misses the point. Instead of trying to maintain the mysterious air of an unattainable sex symbol he's happy to give out a friendly cheerful smacker on the lips. It's true he is a sex symbol, but he almost gives out less of a sex symbol vibe by doing that and instead gives out a friendly down-to-earth vibe.

Thanks so much to GDA for selling this with a very reasonable shipping price! I have read about 30 pages, and I'm loving it so far. Going to finish reading it on Friday while traveling by train for 8 hours :-) Can't wait to finally have time to enjoy the rest of it!! I'd wish it was at least twice as many pages!

Oh yes, did he ever. And it amuses me since I happen to admire both parties in question.

I agree. I feel like Aaron misunderstood the whole point.

Haha, it wouldn't be the first time that he did that in #54, for sure! Haha...

My reaction to finding out the two people Billie most wants to impress with his songwriting was the same as Aaron's. Lol.

I do cut him some slack since Billie wouldn't have been initiating kissing or kissing boys in that part of the world......and I think that South Korea show was the one where that girl decided to snog him for a full ten seconds . So he would've got a different impression of the whole kissing thing from usual. But even if he didn't get the same impression as us it's still only kisses at the end of the day. Looking at everything he said regarding fans maybe he just can't imagine anyone wanting to give one of them a friendly kiss instead of repelling them in disgust :D

The whole topic of kissing is where Aaron is at his hypocritical best. Aaron obviously feels Billie should NOT be kissing people, but then Aaron writes about the kiss he and Billie share, and he writes it as it being the most magical moment for him. You could argue that Aaron is a friend of Billie's and perhaps that makes is only slightly more appropriate than Billie smacking fans on the lips, but the last time I checked, Aaron was not Billie's partner. Aaron becomes a fan in that scene like all the rest of us, desperate for BJA's attention, hopeful for BJA to pull him up on the dance floor and he describes that moment of him basically swooning like a little girl when BJA pulls him onto the dance floor and they share that kiss. In my mind, in that beautifully written Osaka dance floor scene, Aaron becomes one of us and all his judgemental opinions about fans lose their weight, because he is one too...

Personally Im all for The Rev/BJA/Fink or whatever else he wants to call himself jamming his tongue down fans throats. :eyebrows:

I had to reread this whole thread to fully understand everyone's comments now that I've read it myself. Really enjoyed the commentary the second time through. It makes so much more sense now.

Now I've read it, I've actually found myself agreeing with him a lot more than I thought I would. It's refreshing to read a profile that's outside of a magazine so the writer hasn't felt like they've got to leave less than flattering things out.

Yeah I found it kinda cool he wanted to impress one of my countrymen :) I can't see why Bono is such an idol for him. Johnny Ramone, Paul McCartney or Iggy Pop maybe. I never saw U2 as much of an influence on Green Day. Maybe its just since they did The Saints Are Coming. Either way I'm impressed :)

What I wouldn't give to be in that bar...it was so enjoyable and refreshing to know the guys can still have a big mosh/party to the stuff that influenced them as kids. And reading about Billie kissing Aaron...well AC did a lot of favours for my opinion of Billie in this story, if any more were even needed!

Can't say I found it cool . Although I wasn't that surprised as I already knew he was a big Bono fanboy......just didn't know how big.

And yes same for my opinion of Billie. And the best thing is you know Aaron was being brutally honest in this so you know it's really true. I don't think anything he wrote about any of the band members really surprised me, it all confirmed my existing impressions of them. Reassuring to know my impressions were right.

part of me would have liked aaron to have ended the book right there in that bar in osaka when the trip was, on many levels, at its romantic climax...but part of me is also glad aaron continued the story from that osaka climax, because i appreciate him sharing what is the universality of peoples experiences when the traveling starts to get a little tiring and peoples nerves start to get a little frayed, and the drinking is a little less fun, and everyone is ready to go back to their own families. but the osaka scene is by far the one that sticks in my head. i can even hear kiss me deadly in my head as i write this. nobody paints a picture with words like aaron cometbus.
