Church on Sunday

Another interesting thing about this song is the similarity between the chorus to this and the chorus to the Static Age

:o I've never noticed that before, but you're right!

My Mum pointed out the similarity between Static Age and Church On Sunday to me

The first line, "today is the first of the rest of our lives" is so inspiring and sums up the optimistic nature of the song.

Your mum is cool! Bet that must have felt kinda bad for you though?

I got that performance on DVD for Christmas

God, I love this song. Great opening line "Today is the first day of the rest of our lives". So simple, yet so deep and creative.

Great choice for this week! This is my favorite song from Warning, and really one my favorite Green Day songs of all time. I just love the lyrics so much and the melody is really happy and catchy! My favorite line is: "If you live with me, I'll die for you, and this compromise". I really love that song.

Since Tony has the coolest mom ever, I doubt he minded :).

ha, yeah i didn't mind! I love it when my parents get into Green Day :)

Another note on this song, the bit where it breaks down in the middle actually reminded me of the Blink 182 song 'All The Small Things' where it does the same thing. :ninja:

I love this song like I love all the songs from Warning.

One of their best albuns, like AI and 21CB, I think so... :)

This is a great song. Not one of my favorites, but I love it nonetheless. It's one of those songs I listen to while playing video games, for some reason.

It was the first thing I noticed when I heard Church on Sunday for the first time. The chorus is very similar! But they're both nice songs.

Church On Sunday is an amazing song, my second favourite from Warning. The lyrics must be one of the best Billie has ever written:

"Trust" is a dirty word that comes only from such a liar

But "respect" is something I will earn... If you have faith

Just wow. I love the way how they get into the pre - chorus without a break, especially the line "Tears down your face" sticks out there for me :)

Simply an amazing song. I wish they would play it live again (together with some others... Deadbeat Holiday, Jackass... Warning is such an underrated album)

Yes! Just listened to this song like 5 minutes ago, it's one of my favorites off Warning.

Trust is a dirty word that comes from such a liar (:

Woo! Church On Sunday is one of my favourites from Warning! I'd say my favourite is Castaway.

I do LOVE the line 'trust is a dirty word that comes from such a liar' because it's true. it's always the scumbags that say 'babe, you can trust me' when there would not really be need for a good man's trustworthiness to be even brought up because it is steadfast

Great song, probably one of the best off of Warning. It's beautiful because of the love and emotion in the song. He's asking for a second chance, and he'll do anything to get it and keep her in his life. He's admitting to doing wrong, but he's not saying he's the only one to blame.

Bottom line, the world needs more people like this who are willing to work it out and compromise if the other person is.

Favourite lines:

"If you live with me, I'll die for you and this compromise."

"Making your mascara bleed tears down your face, leaving traces of my mistakes."

Nawww great song  The music is great, the lyrics/message as a whole is great, and it's got some great individual lines. Compromise... I did wrong, you didn't act perfectly either, but that was yesterday, and today we're starting with a clean slate and fix whatever went wrong, starting with compromising. It's got both negative and positive things to it, but the overall feeling of it does remain positive.

The line "Today is the first day of the rest of our lives". I know it's a common saying, but I heard it for the first time in this song, and I just really like it and what it means and how it fits in the song. I'm not going to pretend yesterday never happened, but it's in the past, and today we can learn from it and start the rest of our lives.

I never really got the role of trust in the whole thing, though. The song says that trust "comes only from such a liar", suggesting it's something that's not real, or that's always lied about, which makes sense considering the whole bloodshot deadbeat verse, and in the early stages of the compromising thing the trust might be kind of gone, yeah, but I would still think that trust is an important part of a relationship... in the song it's kind of completely talked down. Anyone care to shine their light on this? :) (woah, I need to learn how to make sentences that don't consist of endless strings of dependant clauses ) Or am I just thinking too much now

I like the whole bleeding mascara visual thing synonym representing thing (what's the word? :pinch:).

Funny how the line J'net pointed out, is the one line from the song I never quite understood. "I'm not getting any younger as long as you dont get any older". My stab at it would be something vague along the lines of 'If you aren't going to change, I won't either', but ehmm...

Also, for some reason I've always related "bloodshot deadbeat" to the word sheep. *shrugs*

Great song, totally deserved.

"If I promise to go to Church on sunday, will you go with me on friday night?" is just an epic line

One of Warning's strongest songs, in my opinion.

I've always admired the love that Billie has for Adrienne and the way he conveys it through his songs.

Posrep for you just taking a stab at it. :) I agree with a lot of your observations and will post my own probably tomorrow when I have a little more time!

A lot of talk about the lyrics, not so much about the melody.

Personally I love that its a good, solid punk melody, nice and fast with simple guitar. And the drum intro is great, bit like Burnout
