cmon dude, just because we all cant blog and surf all day like you can doesnt mean that other people cant grow up

i mean at least listen and understand why they changed their sound instead of wondering why masturbation isnt a main topic of 30 year old band members

...and then i destroyed him on his site

Some people just can't simply prefer a band's old sound without trashing the way they are now. Just because HE happens to prefer their 90s sound, they must have lost all their integrity and be "pandering to the masses" now . It seems a pretty childish attitude to have. He should calm down and realize it's just a matter of his personal taste, not of the band's integrity. Liking their old stuff and disliking their new stuff is fine, expecting them to stay the same forever just to cater to him is silly.

Also LOL Andres when I saw this thread title I thought you were making a solemn announcement that you're no longer a Green Day fan or something.

I actually enjoyed how this was written. He has obviously thought out his opinion and articulated it well.

However, the line about "weird synth crap that is American Idiot" was completely untrue and plainly idiotic. I think he is entitled to his opinion, no matter how much it infuriates Green Day fans (and other fans of those bands).

I Disagree with him by all means. With possibly the exception of The Offspring (I refuse to accept that they made another album after Splinter)

you know what mr. columumnist guy?? Green Days as big as they ever were and are not still stuck in the 90's like you seem to be! They're extremely succesfull because they're music is great. So quite being wrong and write about something that at least's not bullshit.

sorry i get pissed when people act like that.... :whistle

Oh come on.

If Green Day continued making the same music they did ten or fifteen years ago, they wouldn't be musicians.

It seems as if everybody has forgotten what music actually is. Music is art. And art always crosses the boundaries and is in constant evolution and change. And it's our choice to like it or not.

This guy really doesn't know what he's saying. Okay, maybe they now have this little mainstream, sensitive, not-so-dark touch. But, oh God, they are 38 YEARS OLD. They cannot talk about masturbation and boredom and high school alienation anymore. Dude, I like the nineties too, yet I cannot live my whole life wishing Kurt Cobain was still alive.

Bands like Green Day, Weezer and so are exactly what prevent the actual mainstream scene from its total collapse and decay. They are hugely talented and keep on doing their thing and showing new generations that there was music, good music before Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers.

Meh. I mean, he does have some points, and then the rest is bullshit. Like, Rancid being big. Rancid are not big here. No one I know personally has heard of Rancid. I don't even listen to them myself, I've just heard of them. Green Day, the Offspring and Weezer are relatively big because people have actually heard of them, and maybe could name a song.

Maybe I just react badly to people insulting Green Day  but I've always thought that Billie didnt expect half the reaction to the one he got when he started wearing eyeliner.

But I DO agree that mainstream music these days is total crap. I listen to it, but it's still crap :P bring back pop artists who actually played instruments...

Also LOL Andres when I saw this thread title I thought you were making a solemn announcement that you're no longer a Green Day fan or something.

Same

I just really don't like people like this. I respect their opinion, but really?

This guy is completely stuck in the past. Green Day's music changes with the times. Billie writes about what affects and matters to HIM; when he was 20, it was marijuana and masturbation, now that he's in his thirties, it's politics and the media (among other things). That just shows that he and the rest of the band grew up. This person evidently didn't.

When people whine about 21st Century Green Day not being like Dookie Green Day, it angers me because basically they're saying that 40 year old guys should dye their hair blue and write about masturbation again. That, to me, sounds a lot worse than a band growing and pushing the boundaries of their music. I might lose my respect for Green Day as musicians if they just kept on re-hashing Dookie over and over again like some people evidently want them to. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

One more thing:

If I could give one piece of advice to Billie Joe, it would be to stick the aerosol can back up your nose

the weird synth crap that is American Idiot

Um...really?

And why does everyone have it out for the eyeliner? Wearing eyeliner (even if you're a dude) does not equal to making worse music.

Also LOL Andres when I saw this thread title I thought you were making a solemn announcement that you're no longer a Green Day fan or something.

Ugh, I don't even bother with this crap. It's a bit redundant now hearing "OMFG, THEY'VE SOLD OUT!" ......(Hehe, "Redundant" :shifty:)

those killed me.... aaand...

that's a good question xD

Good article, is good to see what the rest of the world thinks once in a while (:

I'm assuming it's just a mistake that Billie made when singing the song

I think he meant to flip the shrink being a him, and whore being a girl

just like in the Kerplunk version of Welcome to Paradise he accidentially sings "it nows" instead of "it's now"

He got asked about it in an interview once and he said he sang "he" and "she" because he didn't want to specify the gender. Like a statement to say gender doesn't matter so there's no need to specify it.

he needs to realize bands change, as much as we would enjoy them to stay the same. the only thing i agree with is the last sentence

Kids these days don’t understand what good music is.

its not often you find younger kids listening to good music, but everyone has their own opinion

he's not stuck in the 90's....he's just a little angry that bands that were good or better back then, that are still going...decided to take a different direction.. it's easier to say it's ok that they've moved on if you're a fan from AI and on...it's easier to go BACK and like that stuff too.. but when you fell in love with a snotty, drooling, crazy armed front man who's very mellow now... it's a little heartbreaking. you can't just say oh nobody wants to move on...you're stuck in the 90's and so on..

i prefer 90's green day... however i accept what they're doing now and found other bands to listen to instead..

He actually says that he's stuck in the 90's!

When bands take a different direction, is because they want to. And if the masses liked it, probably they will go on in that direction. Okay, not everybody is obliged to like, and obviously there will always be people that will prefer the older version of them. I accept that. They're just opinions and preferences. And I said that on my first post...

Hey, wanna know something? Dookie sold like 10,000,000 copies. It was a huge hit. Anyone who says AI was stupid 'cause they "sold out" is an idiot because when they liked them back when Dookie was around, it was the same exact thing. Most people then wouldn't know Green Day if it weren't for Dookie, and unless out parents introduced us, most people now wouldn't know them if it weren't for American Idiot.

It seems as if everybody has forgotten what music actually is. Music is art.

Exactly! Music is not created by a band solely to please every single one of its listeners. Its created as an art, and if people like it, fabulous. The artists that make crowd-pleasing music (on purpose) aren't really artists anyway.

Okay, well here's the thing. This guy is expressing a very popular in the most condescending and annoying terms possible. And the notion that every band should mould to his liking is ludicrous and I don't even know why this guy has a corner of the internet to pollute.

I just really hate irrational arguments against a band. If you have a genuine grievance, then fine. But whining for the sake of some self indulgent belief that music fans care what you say is absurd.

Wait, 'synth crap'? Did he listen to the same album the rest of us did? Of course we can differ on opinions in terms of how an album sounds, but that comment is so far out from how AI sounds, it's insane. Me thinks someone gave him a mix CD with songs from American Idiot and Money Money 2020...

And, you know, I'm all for freedom of speech and different opinions, but when you bitch about a band making shitty music nowadays, compared to 10 years ago, it would be valid if they STILL made the same music from 10 years ago, but if they have evolved and you don't like that, it's a whole another deal.

Also:

Look at Rancid! They kill it, theyre huge, and they still play the music that got them to where they are.

Really, what's the point of that comment?. It just bugs me so fucking much when people start doing comparisons that aren't really supported by a valid idea, and also when they go 'OMG, growing up and maturing as musicians iz evil!!!!' it makes me want to scream 'fuck you, if you don't like it, there's plenty of other music to listen to'.

Dude, they are not making music for your taste and delight, they are making it for themselves, and if on the way you like it, awesome, if not, move along and stop bitching.

For me, the great thing about Green Day is that they have evolved as musicians, and that while they are not making exactly the same music that when they did Dookie, they still retain and maintain their essence and their honesty, and they have fun while they're at it.

I'll stop now before this turns into a love letter on why I love Green Day  . But those were my two cents.

One more thing, I loved this comment someone left at the article: "nostalgia is a dangerous drug". So true.

Yeah Billie go back to sniffing glue because that is soooo appropiate with having a family and stuff and please go back to your 23 year old self even though your now 38... Jeez what an idiot....

He clearly doesn't have a clue about what life is like....you can't expect someone to be just like he was 15 years ago and still make the same kind of music, you change and so does the way you see things

Well at least it was worth a good laugh :D

I respect that this guy has his own opinions, but that whole "stick the aerosol can back up your nose and sit down with a guitar again" thing pissed me off. Billie's not a teenager anymore. He's a grown man, with a wife and kids. Of course he's going to be different to Dookie-era Billie. His priorities are different. And really, a 38 year old guy writing Dookie-esque songs about being a teenager? who'd take that seriosuly?

And telling Billie to go back - who wants to live in the past? You'd never grow as a person (or a band)

The guy who wrote this is living in tha past, that's for sure.

and this:

"Look at Rancid! They kill it, they’re huge, and they still play the music that got them to where they are."

has he actually heard Rancid's new album? It's pretty damn average. Below average even. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Rancid to bits, but I sure hope that their latest album isn't a sign of things to come.
