The Day the Music Died (For Me)

Just read this article that talks about Green Day,Weezer, and The Offspring and how they've changed since the 90's. He bashes all of them, but his sentiment about it is one that we often hear from previous fans of the band.

Still,I enjoyed it. Especially his summarization of videos since American Idiot.

"Weird synth crap"? That's not even accurate...

I appreciate his point of view, but at least be factual.

(...) look up towards the sky in your videos (...)

If I could give one piece of advice to Billie Joe, it would be to stick the aerosol can back up your nose and sit down with a guitar again.Look at Rancid! They kill it, they’re huge, and they still play the music that got them to where they are. Go back, Billie. Please.

those killed me.... aaand...

I still wonder why Billie Joe sang “I went to a whore HE said my life’s a bore.”

that's a good question xD

Good article, is good to see what the rest of the world thinks once in a while (:

It's a shame this guy does not realize he is stuck in the 90's and needs to move on!! I lived that era too and loved it but get a life it is 2010....Glory days don't mean shit to me..

Man-scara... nope, guy-liner just sounds better.

And "it's them, not me". What the hell. It's your taste of music. Last time I checked, bands don't make their music to fit a columnist's exact taste, and even if you don't like it, I wouldn't say a band is that good if they still make the same songs they made 15 years ago. Yes, they changed their sounds, but just because you don't like it, doesn't necessarily mean the bands have become bad all of a sudden.

Also, what is up with "synth crap".

Did like this line, even though I do like most of their American Idiot videos:

"Make a couple of songs about war, look up towards the sky in your videos, man-scara running off your eyelids like the talent pouring into the gutter."

Well, he's entitled to his own opinion, but you can't expect an artist to put out the same record every time they release one. He obviously has a problem letting things go.

And I'm not saying this only cause of Green Day, but Weezer is also one of my favorite bands, and I really enjoy all of their albums :)

I respect his opinion but I really don't like how he associates Green Day making good music with Billie Joe doing drugs. I'm pretty sure Rancid are fairly straight-edge aren't they, so I don't know why he threw them in there, or am I wrong?

I think this quote kind of sums up the article,"I’m stuck in the mid ’90s."

"synth crap"??

and he implies that Green Day only made good music when on drugs.... :pinch::pinch:

I don't agree with him at all =/

What's in this article it's his opinion. But I don't agree with him.

He prefers the most punk rock era of Green Day, I prefer the current Green Day era (although I still like many of their older songs).

He's completely stuck in the mid' 90s. And he's not open to our "modern world".

he's not stuck in the 90's....he's just a little angry that bands that were good or better back then, that are still going...decided to take a different direction.. it's easier to say it's ok that they've moved on if you're a fan from AI and on...it's easier to go BACK and like that stuff too.. but when you fell in love with a snotty, drooling, crazy armed front man who's very mellow now... it's a little heartbreaking. you can't just say oh nobody wants to move on...you're stuck in the 90's and so on..

i prefer 90's green day... however i accept what they're doing now and found other bands to listen to instead..

Poor bastard. I feel for him, but he really needs to get over it and move on from these three. They'll only just continue to bring him pain. Let go, Alexander! Let go!

He sounds like an old man. His dad probably said 'kiddo, what's that Weezer/Offspring/Green Day shit you're listening to? You call that music, you must be joking. Pink Floyd, AC/DC, now that is real music.' Columnist becomes a father and doesn't understand why his son is listening to my chemical romance. Son becomes a father... et cetera.

Oh I've heard it all before

I listened to Pearl Jam before they made the same song over and over again

So... on one hand he dislikes that Pearl Jam started to make songs that all sound the same but at the same time he wants Weezer, Green Day and The Offspring to go back, make the same music as they used to?

That's the only thing in that article that didn't make sense to me.

he's not stuck in the 90's....he's just a little angry that bands that were good or better back then, that are still going...decided to take a different direction..

He actually is stuck in the 90s.. at least he said it in his article:

I’m stuck in the mid ’90s, hoping against all odds they’ll go back to the really, REALLY awesome bands they once were.

I guess he likes almost 40 year old men with a family singing about seeing whores, and drugs!

I'm getting Billie an aerosol can for Christmas!!

I agree with him, music has changed and in my opinion, for the worse.

Obviously I still love Green Day new and old, but their 90's stuff is better. I guess the difference between me and him is I accept that they're getting older, and want to experiment more. They're not gunna stay 19 forever.

Who doesn't prefer the 90's? But you can't live in a curtain decade for ever.

I respectfully disagree with you

I don't listen to the Offspring or Weezer, but characterizing American Idiot as "weird synth crap" is so far off the mark that it removes any credibility his opinion has, about Green Day at least. I'm not a fan of the makeup, I think it's unnecessary, but as far as their songwriting goes, excuse them for growing up. This guy is just another in a long line of people who continuously bitch about how men in their late 30s don't want to write songs about masturbation and girlfriends anymore.

Looks like Green Day grew up. He didn't.

Always move forward, Billie. Please. (Going straight will get you nowhere.)

All I know is when I think 'weird synth crap' and Green Day, I think of The Network. Not American Idiot.

that's a good question xD

I always thought it was a sort of purposefull mix up between the shrink and the whore cause the whole song's about being a bit messed up, but I guess not

Okay, as much as I think it's fine for this guy to have an opinion, some people need to accept that what a band does is their decision. Ok so some people won't like it, but ultimately it doesn't matter because if you want to do something with your life, even if it is make shitty music in someone else's opinion, you have the right to do it. Plus I'm sure people would complain more if a band just churned out the same album over and over again, the idea is that you change and grow as songwriters or musicians.

This is such a stupid thing to say. Beyond stupid, in fact.

Here's my point of view:

Green Day, Weezer, and other bands of the '90s had a period of about ten years in-between when they got famous and when they did it again with the next generation of teenagers. Their music shifted to reflect the needs and desires of our generation, but still had the essential teen-angst values that propelled them into fame in the first place. The band members also grew older and more mature, so their content was bound to shift a bit; if it didn't that would be rather repetitive and unrealistic.

To recap: Why didn't Billie write about the Iraqi war in 1994? There was not one, it wasn't what teens of the day were concerned with, and he didn't care about it himself.

Along with all of that, in the ten years it took for Green Day to become famous again, the Dookie kids aged ten years. They didn't have the same angsty feelings they had when they were twelve, and therefore don't get the same satisfaction from listening to the son of rage and love preach about his woes.

Overall, the bitchers of this generation are bitching because they have changed and the music (that has changed in content, but not in its angst-level or core market) did not shift with them entirely but also didn't remain stagnant enough to bring back fond memories of their youths.

Boom.

Agree 100% with the Weezer statement, and The Offspring just doesn't make good music anymore.

The Green Day statement was laughable though. So ignorant. "stuck in the 90's" lol.
