St. Billie Returns To The St. James

 That was the same thing for Robin Williams. He was very adamant about not wanting pictures or videos being taken, and flashes were still going off. At one point he just stopped in the middle of a joke and commented on it, and said something like 'alright here's your moment fuckers take your pictures' and he posed in a lot of different positions then told everyone to put them away.

Maybe it's time they got stricter on cameras going in. Do they even bother searching people?

Well, if an usher sees a camera, they're supposed to tell them to put it away. I guess the people who work at the St. James expect people to obey the rules in their playbill to NOT record the show. But, y'know, people don't give a shit. (Even though they should.)

If anybody here is going to a show and feels the need to record the show, please don't. It violates the actor's contracts, they can see your camera and it tends to piss them off. But Ushers don't search people but they expect people to respect that rule. You can have your camera for SD so they wouldn't take it away except if you're recording.

Tanya, didn't someone already have their camera or phone taken away during the show by Billie and told them to pick it up after the show? Someone tried to record the show behind their playbill and he took it or something in his first stint?

It might be just me who thinks this, but um...shouldn't the actors expect pictures and videos to be taken by people, if they can, simply because of Billie being part of the show? He's a huge celebrity, and it's not like he's going to always be in the show. The show isn't even going to run forever, for that matter. I know it's bothersome and against the rules, but if I were one of them I would just expect it and put up with it =/

Because it's rude and the light can distract them. Even though some people try to be slick, they can still see you. People are told before the show no videos and pictures. Just because Billie's in the show doesn't mean they can just throw that out.

It's still "American Idiot," not "The Billie Joe Show," y'know? Just respect the other actors and enjoy the show.

It would make more sense for them to film it professionally, so they could tell everyone there is no need to film it themselves as something pro shot will be available eventually. But of course they want to draw crowds to the theatre, and they probably think a DVD - or even just a promise of a DVD - would stop some people going.

I don't think the actors are being unreasonable to be getting annoyed at the people filming it. And yeah, I think Billie did once take someone's camera from them for trying to film the show behind their playbill. And it has to make him feel awkward that this really only happens while he in the show.

I'm just saying...it's what's to be expected. I think it would make more sense for there to be searches whenever Billie's in the show, to help stop all the recording and pictures.

Maybe if there's enough people who would be willing to buy a professionally-recorded, legal DVD, they MAY do it. Who knows? Broadway shows don't do that a lot but if the producers or whoever think it'll turn a profit, they COULD. That's a lot of paperwork and time, though.

And it's also expected for the audience to treat the actors with an ounce of respect but apparently..

The thing is, with a Green Day concert all you have to do is wait for one near you or wait for an inevitable concert DVD to be released. But here's this really special, unique thing happening that loads of Green Day fans are excited about, but it's only for people in New York and they're not gonna release any film of it for anyone else to see. In the circumstances I can't blame people for wanting to capture it on film.

I wouldn't wanna do it myself and if it's bothering the cast then fair enough maybe people should hold off on it. But I don't think it shows DISRESPECT to Billie or the cast, it just shows that people are enjoying/are excited about the show so much they're inadvertently being annoying

Well it's no different than a concert, is it?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not pro-camera snappy time, it's just like I said...this sort of this was to be expected, and another level of action should've been taken by the St. James to aid their actors.

Meh. On the one hand I want video and audio footage (and as much of it plz) of the musical as I can't see it, but on the other hand I don't want the actors to be bothered by all the camera things. My wishes don't match up

I agree, I wouldn't want to be searched either. But at the same time people filming in the theatre is a lot worse than people filming in concerts, and yet you get checked going into a concert.

At most concerts they do allow normal digital cameras (just no pro equipment or video cameras), and they also search for things like knives and such, and water bottles/the caps of them. In theatre it's not as likely someone will throw a water bottle randomly in the crowd

And in theatre the vast majority of the people don't intend to film anything and they just had their camera with me, there's nothing wrong with that. They also can't take every camera device away from the visitors. And there's also the ushers who can tell you to put your camera away (which also happens to some extent at concerts, but far less).

That IS true but I really bet there's going to be some sort of tour for the show somewhere in the fuure. As for videos with Billie...don't we have enough to tide us over? :whistle

Besides, none of the actors have said anything publicly until now because, yeah, they probably expect it or can't see it but every day? There is a point where you think, "Y'know, enough is enough. Just chill. No cameras; just enjoy."

....which is exactly what a few of the actors have started to tweet/facebook about. Can't say I blame them.

[Cross-posting from the January 9 meetup thread]

IF YOU KNOW FOR SURE YOU'LL BE JOINING US FOR THE MEET-UP AFTER THE TIMES TALK ON SUNDAY, JAN. 9: Please PM me. The lounge will keep the lights on for us even if it's a quiet night before we get there. I'm keeping an informal RSVP list going so if there is any significant change to our expected ~30something headcount, I can give the lounge manager an update. Thanks!

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread. :)

yes, i'm pretty he took their camera away and yes, now i remember, someone from filming from the front or second row behind their playbill.

A part of me gets really annoyed when I hear people say that Billie doesn't play Jimmy right, or that he isn't as good. Or that Tony is the only St. Jimmy.

I absolutely adore Tony Vincent, and I think he did an amazing job. But I just don't understand how anybody could say that.

I feel like Billie plays the role exactly right. He plays it more the way I always pictured it when I listened to the album. And frankly, I'd say the man that created the character knows how to portray said character better than anyone else.

There's nothing wrong with two different interpretations of the same character. I only saw Tony once, back in April, but I loved the lurking, stalking, sinister way he portrayed the role. Anything that Johnny was doing that was forward-looking, productive, or constructive for himself or toward Whatsername, you *always* had to keep an eye on where St. Jimmy was....what he was doing, who he was looking at, even just where he was standing or who he was hovering over or between. His presence and actions added such great depth to an understanding of how Johnny was undermining himself. I'll never forget how Tony portrayed that or how much he just fucking OWNED the show when his character was on.

That being said, I am totally excited beyond imagination to see how Billie plays the same role. My understanding from the posts here from those who already have seen him perform is that where Tony's interpretation had more of that "overtly" dark, sinister, sabotaging tone to it, Billie takes it in a different direction -- not quite as dark, more "I'm everybody's good time even though I'm actually killing you", more improvised and more chaotic. I can't wait to see him Sunday so I can actually have my own conclusions instead of just "what I've heard is..."

But at this point, it would seem that both of these interpretations of the same character are equally valid based on the album's lyrics, music, themes, and inner messages. Enjoy them both, that's what I say. :)

From Gerard's Facebook:

His last point is valid. I mean, if it wasn't for the videos, that group wouldn't know how "Holiday" was and wouldn't have copied it.

Just be aware of the cast and don't take pictures or video. And if you see the person next to you doing it, kindly ask them to stop. I have done that. The lady next to me just thought that JOS was great and whipped out her iPhone to record a video, not even being discreet about it. I softly told her that the audience isn't allowed to take video or pictures. She put it away but took it out again to audio record Whatsername, which wasn't distracting as the video taking so I didn't even bother.

I'm finally caught up with this thread! (read from Jan 4th posts :D )

I agree with the cast about cameras. It's not only annoying to them on stage, but also to everyone around the person filming/taking pictures. It's just like in a movie theater, if someone has their phone on, everyone above and around them can see that little box of light coming from the phone. It just takes away from the experience in my opinion...During the encore, I'd say it's okay (or else I'd be a hypocrite :P) because they're not jumping around, climbing things, or swinging in the air, so it should be less of a hazard. And like someone said before, they post the audio on their site, so a video is just like that audio with pictures!

My little countdown: 7 weeks and 2 days left til I'm off with my fam to New York!!! (And hopefully to meet Billie  ) Reading everyone's experiences on meeting him and the cast has made me feel like there's more of a possibility than I thought!

The entire time I thought Gerard was someone else /bad fan

I know SO many people that weren't even intrested in flying to New York for AI, and then BAM Billie comes along & everyone wants to see it. I've always wanted to see it moons before Billie was even involved with the musical not just for the sake that Billie is there.

I know. I couldn't wait to see it (and did last June) way before there was ever a hint that he'd take a role for himself. I think it's just an amazing show, with great music and outstanding actors.

They didn't search anybody, and the ushers weren't concerned. I got a picture with my iPhone, but only because it has no flash and no indication that there's a picture being taken.
